How to build a box and a rail

wish i wouldve thought of this shit before i built my rail....

I had to put screws through the tops and bevel out the holes so the screw wouldnt stick out.

Dude this was a lifesaver ive benn tryin 2 find some good plans on how to build a sturdy well made box. The only things that may play a factor in my build is the money and trying to find a cheap place to get the hockey board. I have a hockey area nearish my house so i think ill look there but....anyway thanks for the thread its a lifesaver

unfortunately, yes.

I called many places to get lexan or HDPE, and the guy I spoke to said that HDPE would slide better than lexan. It gets a little slow, nothing that a little water won't help speed up. Not a big deal. But as far as catching edges. You have to have completely detuned edges for my box. There are tons of little black plastic scrapings around my yard from plastic that's been shaven off the corners. I would really making a coping on the side to prevent catcing edges and shaivng off the plastic. Even if the coping is a few mm below the plastic, it will still work. Otherwise, bevel down the edges of the plastic and your skis(underfoot).

needs some more supports and pvc on top. almost done.great design

We started building the box based on ur pictures today and it took us about 4hrs but we ran into some issues along the way but it came out great. So thanks for the great thread it help a shitload. So once we get the plexiglass to finish it off ill post pictures

so me and my friends are making  a pvc rail this weekend. and we dont have any of the supplies at home depot how much u think wood, pvc, screws and all that shit will end up costing

so you basically apply that to the bottom of the pvc like glue and it holds it well?

i know this tread is old but im building a rail and just wondering

Um, for gluing the rails down. Liquid nails works somewhat well. You have to put some weight on rail after you use the liquid nails to make sure it sticks well, and let it set for a while(a day). But you also have to use screws at the ends to make sure it stays down.

As far as cost goes. It really depends on your project.

PVC rails are around $1.50 a piece(10' length). 2x4's aren't expensive either. The 10' rail I made was prob. $15. I can't remember. Just design your rail, and figure out how much wood you need, and go to home depot to see how much it is. They may even have prices on the website, or you could call them.

im just posting to get this in my threads, but im going to do the same design as you and i was wondering how much wood you needed , in 2x4s. and also i want to use liquid nails but u said to do screws too how do you screw the pvc into the wood?

Thanks a lot for the thread, very complete and informative on how to build a good rail/box that will last longer than 1 bail on it. I'm thinking of making one myself with a run-in for summer time. I don't have much room to do that though :S. I have some stairs in my backyard with some room. Good idea to put the run in in the stairs ? I'll even the slope with wood and put some astro turf or tarp on top. Which one is the best to gather speed quickly ?

i just built the rail. it turned out really well. i made the vertical supports 2' instead of 1' like you suggested. thanks for the help

bump for the summer and kids that want to build a rail or box.

if you're building a box, just use a bunch of pvc pipes. the hdpe didn't work well.

Thank you. I am going to build one once my season ends but I really need some drop in info. Please, could someone post some up. If not, I'll take a cruise through Build a Jib 101.

im just about done my dropin..puttin the final touches...but i need to bluid the lip on and the flat up to the rail/jump..i didnt think tarp would work ..but if you say it does, then i guess it does lol... but how wel does it work. and can i use it for the surface of the jump as well or will it be to sketch.?

I put dowels that were little skinnier inside the pvc

this made drilling into it easier and make the pvc stronger

Seriously, I am impressed!!!. HDPE is the stuff they use at all the ski areas. That is a pro job. Did the plastics guys say why they had a tough time getting rid of the black stuff. If you use it at a ski area, it might add to the stick factor when your skis hit snow again. I know the white stuff is always in high demand which is why it's so fricken expensive. Dude if it only took you an hour an a half to make those, you should start selling them. +++Kar.
