How the FUCK can ”Ski for Sarah”-stickers get banned in the Olympics?

Its the IOC after all. Its a large, bureaucratic and corrupt self perpetuating organization . Its full of bullshit.

I am disappointed, but not surprised.

"MICHAEL ERUZIONE, WINTHROP, MASSACHUSETTS"

Who do you play for?

"I PLAY FOR, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"

You guys are all a little nuts, lets go to the biggest stage in the world and expect them to change rules for us. We will lose that battle every time. We are the ones who pursued them.

Extremely disappointing and upsetting, and just like its been said, she pushed to get the sport to the world stage. This is disrespectful.

Im not too suprised about this, but the concept of skiers being told what they can and can't wear at a contest just seems weird to me. At any other contest, you would pretty much be fine with anything short of a swastika on your helmet, but now anything that has any meaning to it at all is not acceptable. Just seems a bit strange

I know there are like 60 other comments saying the same thing but this is the biggest fucking bullshit i have ever seen. I was one of the guys who really liked the ioc for putting freeskiing in the olympics and thought it would really benefit the sport but i lost alot of respect for them when i saw this.

You keep using this terminology -pick up pitch forks in your other post- to describe what's transpiring here. I know you're hyperbolizing to a degree, but the reality is that all of this is just a few disgruntled tweets and some posts on an online forum. No body of skiers or boarders have mobilized. People in the community are simply voicing their displeasure/concerns regarding the situation, and that's an important function of social media and by extension freedom of speech.

So take a seat and let everyone express their relatively innocuous opinions on the topic, instead of spouting your conservative holier-than-thou 'don't rock the boat' gospel.

Hey man, it has gotten a little tiring seeing people trying to find things to bitch about regarding the Olympics, instead of making a little effort to enjoy them.

I will take a seat, but just turn down the damn music and put yer pitchfork away!

Jesus fuck man he better watch his back, lol you can't say shit like that anymore with out someone important seeing it

I don't even want to get into it and type out the essay about how advertising and stickers work for athletes. It has nothing to do with the message they're very strict about what stickers can and can't be put on TV.

som snowboarder in the semis today put his number on his helmet in his first run, that guy is now drowning in pussy

Apparently you are an outsider that doesn't even have enough respect to go research the history of our sport. To answer your question: without the lobbying Sarah did skiing halfpipe and slopestyle would not be in the Olympics at all. Without the lobbying Sarah women's halfpipe and slopestyle would have never happened. She broke the barriers into male only competitions.

You listed other skiers that have passed away the difference is Sarah made huge impact on each and every skier that is at those Olympics.. The others may have impacted some but certainly didn't impact all of them..

Now go read some history and quit being a disrespectful tool or please leave this site because we don't need your kind here.

yup.. good luck to him getting through airport security easily from now on. i hope a mod sees it and bans the IP from accessing her.

In fairness to medski, I'm pretty sure he was just straight up asking what she did, to learn about the "history of our sport" that you're preaching about. I'll be honest, I can't quite get my head around why Sarah is considered to have had so much more of an impact than any other skiers that have passed - from where I'm sitting it wasn't hugely apparent before she passed. And I'm sorry, but "Without the lobbying Sarah women's halfpipe and slopestyle would have never happened."...really?!

In terms of the stickers, this is hardly surprising news - the stickers represent a charity organisation independent of the olympics, they aren't suddenly going to make an exception. I says a lot that someone needs a sticker on their helmet to "ski for sarah".

Well if no one can have the ski for sarah stickers why can henrik have this? did no one make a big deal out of it? It's still pretty ridiculous that they can't have them because it's not branding.

I really hope Henrik rides with a picture of Warnick on him like he did at the XGames, and pulls it out at the end of a run.

this

still amazes me how many naive children there are on this website. dont hold your breath with all your "fuck the olympics fuck the ioc bullshit". this isnt a targeted attack on the ski for sarah movement. its a general ban on non olympic adverts/sponsors/causes/etc. those rules are there for a reason that apparently you fried heads cant understand

no disrespect though

Not allow them to compete, and then even if they did not air their run on television and if they win stripped their metal.

Sarah was not just a too female competitor. When people reference her as the reason we got pipe and slope style into Olympics... Here is why :,

Going back over a decade, Sarah was the voice and movement to gain equality and popularity in female competition . Sarah she petitioned, spoke , presented to FIS, IFSA, IOC , to gain recognition for female athletes , then freestyle athletes altogether for entrance of pipe and slope into The Olympics .

Lol wut? What's so incorrect/wrong about that post? I'm sorry, is NS the type of site that can't handle truth? Oh wait...

I could have called that you were from Boston without even looking at your profile.

You should probably kill yourself.

Not from Boston, bud. Currently residing here after living between Tahoe and Breck for the last 6 years. Great statement though.

OK, another one…

Hey Waller, got a minute or two? I'd like to tell you a few things about the whole Sarah-sticker thing and why the IOC-rules make me so pissed. Sit down, grab a coffee, because this may be more words than you are used to...

What about IOC?

The Olympics are governed by the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Charter*. IOC are a bunch of very high-paid individuals, mostly retired athletes but now so heavily wined, dined and bribed that they completely have lost touch with reality (if a city/country wants to become a candidate for the Olympics, they'd better be prepared to open their wallets…).

What did Sarah do?

Sarah Burke invested heaps of hours in meetings with FIS, IOC and other organizing bodies to convince them that pipe is a sport for both men and women (which was an important criteria for accepting the sport into the Olympics).

Sarah helped them to wipe some dust off their aging games, convincing them to add new and exciting sports that would draw new viewers. Quick note: Without being able to sell TV-rights, there would be no games – and broadcasters would never pay big bucks if the ratings weren't high enough. New sports = higher ratings.

In short, Sarah ensured them continued success with the games. Considered how small our sport is, we're getting mucho mucho media attention everywhere. Look what images are coming out of Sochi. Heck, in Sweden even the milk cartons have a freeskier on them along with those Olympic rings!

Yeah, freeskiing is getting attention, so why am I so upset with this particular sticker ban?

I'm probably much older than you, Wallar. However, my age and what I work with is of very little importance here, but let's just say that I have been involved in making companies and organizations successful by helping them to act a little more like human beings, not as badass, greedy corporations.

The sticker thing shows that one fat hand of the IOC is completely unaware of what the other fat hand is doing. I'm VERY aware of the fact that there are rules for logos and whatnot on the athletes jackets, skis, helmets and blablabla – but just because there is a rule, doesn't mean that you can't speak out against it. Trennon Paynter may be right, everyone in the games WILL be skiing for Sarah, but that will remain unknown to most viewers.

And in this case, there were no politics involved, no business, nothing but honoring a beautiful human being who – I'm repeating myself here – helped IOC to make their games more successful, watchable and marketable (and trust me, they like dollars...).

I'm done pretty soon. Keep reading.

The Fundamental Principles of Olympism (page 12 in that pdf) are a bunch of very beautiful words. They talk about good example, development of humankind and human dignity.

But the way the IOC is enforcing their rules, show that these principles are just two pages of nicely written caca and that the IOC are just a bunch of bureaucrats who no longer are connected to the world of sports and the athletes that they are paid to rule over.

TV-rights, sponsorships and sucking up to non-democratic leaders are apparently way more important to the IOC than the humans that make the games possible in the first place. The Principles are just two pages in a pdf.

I used to be all for freeskiing in the Olympics. But, as far as I'm concerned, every little step on the road to Sochi has shown that the games are not a good place for freeskiing to be in. And in my book, the sticker affair was just the straw that broke the camel's back. Therefore, again, fuck the IOC.

Thanks for reading this. Now do have a nice day.

Nothing incorrect about it. Just incredibly disrespectful, pretty sure talking bad upon dead skiers isn't taken well by mods on here.

inb4 you come back with another distasteful and obnoxious comment

Boo fucking who, do you have any idea what shit show the Olympics would turn into, if all countries were allowed to honor people who died over the past four years. It's sad that Sarah died but the Olympics is not the time or place to show it.

It is safe to say everyone views death differently and the Olympics is a money hungry corporation. No surprises.

Yep. I'm sure these rules are nothing new. If you people REALLY don't like what the IOC is doing and want to make a statement, then stick it to the man and boycott the event.

Why not? No one is forcing anyone to do anything. If they don't like the rules, don't enter. These rules are nothing new from what I understand.

The Olympics encompasses so many sports between both the winter and summer games. Yes, it does suck that the rule applies to the "ski for sarah" stickers, but think of how many other people/sports would love to pay homage to a legend to their sport country?

I'm not saying I like the IOC or its rules, just that given the way the rules are set up, I can see why the stickers were banned. As far as I have seen in these threads, this is a blanket ban that has been a long standing rule in the Olympics, so its not like they are specifically targeting Sarah Burke by doing this.
