How should I convince my Parents.

The beauty of what America is, is that you don't have to justify anything to anyone as long as it's legal. OP wants to own an AR-15 simply because he can.

I don't even want to get started on the propaganda term "assault rifle".... But for the uninformed.... ANYONE that is 18yo and goes through a background check can own any type of rifle (in most states). It varies by state on how you can store the firearm but it is NOT illegal to have one in your vehicle. How would you even get it home? Most states require you to have it unloaded and the ammo stored in a separate container. Some states require them to be visible from out side of your vehicle.

As far as carrying full size rifles (a 16" or larger barrel), in most states you can openly carry a rifle anywhere you like unless otherwise posted. Granted you will probably get the cops called on you by some idiot that's scared to death of their own shadow. That one is up to you though and i would not suggest anything like this unless you are fully versed in your states laws.

Why anyone would want to conceal an AR is beyond me but again, it's perfectly legal to do as long as you go through the necessary licensing.

Here's some more facts to scare the shit out of some liberals!

your post is completely based on state law, its different in every state.

Sure you can transport your ar15, but when you're cruisin on a friday night with some homies, a cop isn't going to be very happy you're carrying around an ar15 in your trunk.

Automatic machine guns are utterly and completely fucking unnecessary. you dont need them to hunt, because if you're not total shit at shooting you dont need a fun that pumps your prey full of lead. You dont need it for self defense because its impractical to carry around and again, you dont really need to riddle a burglar with bullets for him to be stopped. And if your just using it at the range its just a waste of money for loud noises and holes in a paper target. So, in conclusion, get your fucking head out of your ass, and smell the sweet smell of reason.
 
It doesn't matter what the traffic enforcement servant thinks. As long as you aren't doing anything wrong he has no business ever knowing it's even in there. The perception of what police can and cannot do in the country is absurd.
 
It doesn't matter what he can or cannot do, if you get pulled over and don't tell him you have a weapon in your car, you could be really fucked if he decides you car smells like weed and wants to search it. Yes, the perception of what cops can do is fucked but whats even more fucked is that they can do whatever they want and they will do whatever they want. If i had a gun in my car, i would tell him i had it and show him the permit. If that permit was for a hand gun it'd probably be a little more acceptable than a ar15, especially if the owner is 18. You don't have to do anything wrong to get in trouble with the cops, period. You may not get a ticket, but you'll have to deal with a bunch of bullshit. Saying that your car is an acceptable place to leave your ar15 24/7 is fucking retarded. Buying an ar15 is fucking retarded.

Not true. As you had mentioned above regarding what I said, and had already mentioned. It completely depends on the state. Some states you must inform an officer if you are carrying weapons. Some states you do not.

9 times out of 10 if you are well versed in your states law and converse with an officer in a civil tone, you won't be be hassled by an officer for being armed. Most police officers are firearm enthusiasts. If you couldn't tell by now, we lover our own kind. :)

I actually don't know of any states that require permits for rifles.

The fact of the matter is, in this day and age; any encounter with an LEO should be recorded in some way or another. If you aren't breaking the law and you're getting harassed by your servants... congratulations...you just won the lottery! There are literally dozens of cases (if not more) every year where police are completely ignorant of the laws that they are supposed to protect, and wrongfully arrest or harass gun owners. If I can win the lottery when a corrupt police officer is breaking the law, I'll gladly inconvenience myself and whoever else is in the car.

Btw, I never said anything about keeping it in your car 24/7. The person who originally said that is a moron. What happens when your car is broken into and the criminal makes off with your gun. That negligent as a mother fucker!

go to a gun range and try out a bunch of different guns and different calibers. My person favorite is .45 Colt 1911, but you should try a Smith and Wesson Magnum 500 (below). They are insane.

a hell of a lot of people. usually ar-15s are .223 which is a relatively small round. in some states it is illegal to hunt certain animals like deer with such a small round but can still be used for varmint hunting. but if you can get a .308 upper for an ar which makes an amazing deer rifle (spoken from experience) and could even be used for bigger game. there are other uppers you can get to change the caliber but the only ones i have experience with are the .223 9mm and .308 ones

but if youre dead set on it and have legitimate reasons to own one (of which there are many... however there are also a lot of illegitimate reasons people claim too) then keep shooting with your friends or whoever will do it legitimately, learn about them, show you have a reason to have one and show you can responsibly own and handle one

i dont think you need an ar15, if it's for self defense etc then a handgun will do just fine... if you need a rifle i dont see any reason why you'd want or need to keep it in your car, that's just asking for trouble

but really at the end of the day it's your parents' house and what they say goes. if they don't want an assault rifle there then they don't have to have one

and to the dude who was talking about people saying you CAN'T have one, that's not what anyone's saying, we're just saying in a lot of cases it's just stupid and will lead to more trouble than it prevents. don't polarize this shit even more than it already is

I don't have time to read all the thread but a lot of you seem to think you need a permit for this gun. I believe that only a very few states require permits for AR-15's. Michigan and California are the only two I can think of. In just about every other state you just need to be 18 and have a clean record. They are fun guns, I have one and shoot it all the time. Not really all that necessary but amazingly fun.
 
Double post here, but eHeath you're not taking into consideration where other people live/what their interests are. I live in the country and shoot all the time. I spent $1500 on my AR and I shoot the thing twice a week. They are amazingly fun to shoot. If you ever get the chance to shoot one, do it. You will enjoy it a ton.

To T.L., I don't know how you don't expect people to be freaked out by someone carrying a fucking assault rifle while walking down the road. Also, stop bringing up all these stupid state laws. That's not the argument anyone is making against you. They are asking for the OPs or anyones justification of having an assault rifle. As said before, shooting it at a range is fucking stupid and crazy expensive. Using it for hunting is like pussy shit, get a rifle or something and shoot the animal with a well-aimed shot. Having an assault rifle is stupid, expensive, and unnecessary.

Also, police can do whatever they want. How people think the police's power is overexaggerated is stupid. If a cop walks into your house and starts searching it, it's illegal, they're not allowed to do it, but you can't kick them out of your house. What you can do is wait till they're done, take them to court and sue them. Same goes for your car. If a cop pulls you over and feels like searching your car, you can't say no, you can't stop them, you can't drive away. You have to let them search your car and then again, take it to court later. Sure most cops won't do shit like that, but if it happens, there's nothing you can do about it. So everybody, stop saying cops don't have the power to do stuff because they do, there are just consequences for them doing it.

You clearly don't know shit about hunting. Hunting with an AR-15 is 10X harder than hunting with a regular "deer" rifle. An AR-15 shoots a .223 which is incredibly small for deer. It's actually a varmint gun, used to shoot woodchucks and things, not a gun to hunt deer with. So if are hunting with an AR-15 your shot has to be perfect otherwise it won't kill the deer. Most guns used to kill deer are .243 or larger. Also when you hunt in most states you aren't allowed to load more than 3 bullets in the gun. So that makes an AR even with a normal rifle. The only advantage you could get is that it is semi auto which again depending on the state you can hunt with anyway. You could buy a semi 30-06 and go in the woods and do far more damage than an assault rifle. And shooting it at a range is no longer that expensive, you can buy 20 rounds of .223 ammo for about 6 dollars. They aren't great quality but good enough to shoot at the range. Most people posting in this thread are extremely ignorant to the fact that a ton of people own assault rifles. They are fun to shoot and hold their value extremely well so if you buy one you can sell it back for almost the same price.

Yup, you need a Title II firearms permit which involves a pretty detailed FBI background check and needs to be renewed every 3 years I believe.
 
Of course the average person is going to be freaked out. I was trying to make a point of how ignorant the average person is to actual laws. People think knowing laws are for lawyers and that's what get's people in trouble a lot of the time.

Incorrect. You can say no. If they insist just make them aware that you "do not consent to ANY searches, however if you demand a search of myself and my property I will comply." 4th Amendment buddy. Research it. This method only works if you are a law abiding citizen with nothing to hide and you can prove and illegal search by the officer (witnesses, recordings, etc.)

 
1. become trained, if something happens were you get robbed and you dont know how to use the gun you are screwed.2. dont buy an ar-15, get a pistol preferably a glock, they will always fire.
3. So say someone breaks into your house and you draw on them, are you ready to possibly kill someone? this is something most people who buy a weapon for self defense dont realize that they arent really going to kill someone, but the person who breaks into your house will be willing to kill you if you pull a gun on him, so a gun may put you in a worse position.
in conclusion if i were you i would ask yourself some serious questions, and dont have your parents buy a gun for you, when you are ready go and buy it yourself.

 
Exactly. He/she can still search your car, there will just be consequences for them if they do. Which is exactly what I said. I know my amendments.
