How should boots fit?

I am in the process of buying new gear, and I need to get some boots. Every sales person I talk to gives me a different story as to how a boot should feel. So, I'm more confused than ever. I've tried boots that cut off my circulation, and others that give me too much room to breath. I have a pretty narrow foot. A bit too narrow for a salomon x-wave, but a little on the wide side for an upscale lange (although I can make it work). My shoe size is a 10 to 10 1/2. Oh, also, I found some mid-level lange's that are OK (vec-s 60), and the price is really what appeals to me, they are comfy and fit my foot decently it is just that the boot does not lean forward enough for my taste. (probably because it isn't designed for as advanced of a skiing level as I will be doing). Is it worth saving $300 and going for the cheaper boot that fits pretty well? or going all out price wise? Any input on how a boot should fit, or what kind of boot I should get would be great (price is an issue).

enough so your shins dont bash the front, and you can move your legs all around, but make sure you can flex backwards and forwards too

i wouldn't go for those vec-60s - they're crap. insetad, try and find some of last years mid-range langes like the crl 70 or crl 80 for cheap. they should be on sale now that they're a season old.

acutally this store near me is having a sale, so i bought some crl 90's for $360. I'm not sure if its the boot i want, but i bought them just in case. I am also not sure if i wanna spend that much on a boot. The same thing happened with me. they felt comfy in the store, and when i got home, tehy started to hurt, but now i'm wearing them around teh house and they are slowly feeling better and better.

yeah you should have prewarmed them in the store, then much of the wearing them out process will diseapere.

the worst thing you can do is get a boot that is to big because thats why you hear stories of people losing toe nails and stuff like that. and rember that the boot liner will pack out 10-15% after 6 or 7 times riding them so if they feel comfy now you might have some trouble in a little bit. the only way to tell if a boot fits is to do a shell fit and thats done by removing the liner and sticking your foot in the shell then placing your toes up to the front of the shell so there jsut touching then flexing your knee forward, then placing your hand behind your heel and if you can fit more then 2 fingers behind there the boots to big. and if the boot feels to small but the shell fits you, rember that it is easier to take volume out of a boot then it is to put volume in a boot. so if the boots are 'to small' take em to you shop and they can strech out the toe box or grind down the shell from the inside which will give you some more room. and the way to tell if a boot fits is if your toes touch the front of the boot and when you flex forward your heel isnt moving and its staying in the 'pocket' of your boot.

hope that helps you out a bit.

I got saltos for 150$ canadian, do you think that they will be good to freestyle with? I ski like 30% groomed, 20% trees, 50% park

Comfortably tight basically. Your best bet would be to go with a boot that is a little on the snug side as opposed to loose. At least when it's tight in places you can blow out the boot and make other modifications. Also expect to put in a fair amount of time trying to make your boots fit well, my last pair took me like 2 weeks of blowing out before they finally fit me the way I wanted.
