Yes, in the photo/video business its a lot of who you know and how persistent and reliable you are. And in all honesty, a lot of the times it doesnt come down to just plain talent. For example I got hired as a full time editor at the company I work for now and going into it I had only shot ski videos, and had only edited on Premiere pro and this was a final cut editing job. Basically my boss hired me because he thought I could learn and he liked my attitude. So in that case he hired someone way under qualified because he thought it would be good in the long run.
Moral, it might take a while to get your foot in the door but once you are in then its easy to find work. Thats why it takes people a long time, and why you see a lot of people that are super talented but cant get a job.
