im probably gonna buy an HDV cam, sony hdr-hc3. how much space will this take up when i go to edit vids? im gettin an imac with 2 gb of ram and i think like 100gb of hard drive space.

also if anyone else has any camera suggestions of cameras that are of equal or better picture quality, same to less price range, and take up same or less space then post em up plz

thanks

I would get atleast a 500gb external drive. If I remember correctly regular DV video works out to be about 10min for every gb, but HD is like 10min/10gb. Plus all the render files for your project and you're talking a lot of hard drive space. Right now I have a Powermac G5 with 2 gigs of ram, and it came with like a 150gb internal hard drive. I pretty much filled it my freshmen year of college. Between music, downloading/burning DVDs, installing Final Cut Pro, Sound Track etc, and my various video projects it filled up really fast. Now I have a 500gb external drive. That's where I store all my finished videos, downloaded movies and music etc. Basically everything that ISN'T part of a video project goes on the external drive, and I keep all of my raw footage and on-going projects on the harddrive. So far that system has worked really well for me. Hope this helps answer your question.

oh yeah, wanted to add that this is the external drive I bought: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822154150

right now they're out of stock, but you can click to have them notify you with an email when they get more, or you can find them on e-bay for a little more. It doesn't transfer files super-fast, but it's been very reliable in the time that I've had it. Plus it's really cheap, and all I had to do was plug it in and it works w/ my mac.

HDV and DV take up the same space on a computer. Both formats have a data rate of 25Mbps which means that each second of video takes up 3.125MB of space. I think that means 100GB hard drive would hold over 500 minutes of video.

My uncle has an HD Cam and right now he has 3 Terabytes (yes, Terabytes) of Hard Drive Space on his computer, and it's almost all used. You need way more HD space than you think you do. And you should probably invest in a Mac Pro if you want to edit in HD.
