how much pro skiers earn

yeah bode makes a shitload like 2 million from rossi with an extra 500,000 bonus for winning stuff, then he's getting about 300,000 from nordica and the advertisement on his helmet is like 2 million, and thats not including how much he gets for winning races, for winning the hanenkam you get like 60,000 he probably made like 4-5 million last year

What's the deal with filming movies? Do companies like MSP actually pay the skiers to be in their movies or do they just provide free trips? I s'pose it's different again with PBP which is probably logistically easier.

Also, do the skiers need to provide permission for them to be in a movie? Beacuse I saw some fucking random south-south east side trailer or something and Tanner was in it which was weird because all the others were unknowns (for me anyway).

damn

what you gonna do when shit hits the fan, are you gonna stand and fight like a man, will you be as hard as you say you are, are you gonna run and go get your bodygaurd

yah.. whoever brought up the point about mike nick has got it.. a lot of these guys hold down two jobs.. and even for the ones that don't... i wouldnt mind living the life they do for the bank theyre gettin... plus, since they make so many connections now, theyll probly be able to get jobs in the industry after theyre done riding

NO film company pays riders to be in their movies. No real film company. I don't know how Warren Miller works, but Poorboyz and MSP DO NOT pay riders to shoot with them. Guaranteed. In fact, sponsors tend to have associations with different production companies, and I think they occasionally cough up cash to have certain riders in certain movies. Don't think those fancy-shmancy dissolving logo shots at the start of every movie are free either!

'jib_this why are you such an ass? all your posts are dissing someone els (sic)' Krongos

Whistler Sucks.

companies pay to have segs for their riders. at least with the real companies. the money that is paid sets the crew up in the locations for the shots and the sponsors send their riders to that location for the movie. movie companies typically make money once the CDs are sold. essentially all movies sold are part of the profit. so one 24.95 DVD is 24.95 of profit

well, i didnt make anything last year...almost made $5000...that would have been fuckin sweet.

Now im set to make incentives this year and i could do fairly well...

work to live...not live to work.

work to ski...but only if you ski to work. The simple equation to skibumming 101

I know that shaun white makes a 10 mill a year, heard it on 20/20. I am agreeing with a lot of the other guys that posted 7 years ago!

I am sure there are non pro skiers who make much more than pro skiers.

They may not get paid a whole lot to ski, but any endorsements like pro model goggles they make plenty of $$ from, they also never have to pay to ski or for any of the equipment they ski with. Yes Shaun White makes tons but its because he has his own clothing lines and video games, plus he started going big in snowboarding when it was newer and everyone thought it was the shit. But all things included pro skiers have a pretty cushy life because when they dont live at home the travel expenses are usually covered by sponsors or are free for publicity reasons.

Waaaaay too much variance for any kind of serious answer.
Also, the line between "Pro" and "Am" is so arbitrary at this point. Some of NSs darlings who pump out edits are full time students with flow deals.
Some Euro contest kids that most of us are only casually familiar with have obscene endorsement deals with companies we haven't heard of.

Truth.

So many AMs are on a pro level, I think its impossible to spot a difference other than how you're labeled by your respective team.

But, I'm a pro lifestyle skier and I get paid in year old shwag and gear, beer (cheap domestic draughts), lift tickets, and couches to sleep on in ski bum towns. Sometimes.
Glamorous, I know.

I couldnt imagine most pro skiers make more than 200K / yr, considering the economy is in the shit. The ones who make the real money have other businesses on the side, like dumont and empire attire, T Hall, Jp and armada. Jon with JOSS and Uniq. Considering most skiers only have there HS diploma, i couldnt imagine they would make to much money if they stopped skiing. Most of the guys will fade off once they reach there mid 20's because the money wont be there. People dont become pro skier to make tons of money.

I always love when this thread happens. This shit is hilarious. Think "have to work construction and wait tables in the summer in order to eat". 200k per year... gold.

VW Owns Audi so if Jon Olsson is sponsored by VW he's prob gonna get a pretty nice Audi.

I saw a legit vid with simon dumont a couple years ago that said he was making over 200K so with empire and everything it's prob at least 300K. Skiers of that caliber like TJ and Sammy prob make around 200 as well

great way of putting it...what it takes is an unbelievable amount of sacrifice and hard work. most don't understand how much.

Consistency is the kicker I think. And being able to nail your shit in the worst conditions under pressure (aka crazy urbans when you have to get the shot and crappy setups at comps). But there are a lot of amateurs out there who are pretty close to that level.

skiers make nothing.snowboarders make a little more than nothing.
what they DO get, is free shit, free travels, and tons of skiing!
except for shaun white, and others involved in the industry

If you want to make money in anything, but especially skiing, you have to think outside the box.Keep in mind too that the "ski industry" as most people on here know it has only been around for 10 years. It seems strange to me that ski companies to work harder on tieing rec skiing and park skiing together the way they used to do with racing. companies like K2 and head sell tons of skis every year and make a lot of money off it. But, if you look at their rec/ cruiser skis compared to their park skis, you can't even tell that they're made by the same company. Meanwhile, look at a company like burton who's boards are unmistakeable if skiing can do that then I think it has a chance of being a real "industry".

The highest paid skiiers are the race superstars I'm afraid.... Simon wishes he made a mil a year!! Ha ha that's ludicrous.

The big European race names/legends who win world cups and Olympic golds and get huge coverage, sponsorship and advertising deals..... They're worth a lot. Freeskiing is nothing on the fis world for top earnings unfortunately.

You don't ski for coin!

I see what your saying, but Burton doesnt have a 'park' board and a 'rec' board.ski manufacturers need to make skis that will appeal to all different people, not ONLY park skiers. however, if park skiing is very popular and trendy then they will have 'park inspired' skis that are all mountain, with somewhat of a tail tip and somewhat of a similar sidecut.
parkbig mountainrecreationalall mountainrace
all of these crowds need to be satisfied when building ski's, therefore the need for many different models is inevitable.

There was an article in Skiing Magazine a few years back that touched on this topic. Of the athletes they cited, I believe they said Simon and Tanner make around $300,000 a year, while Jon (the highest paid pro freeskier) makes about $400,000 a year. Compared to the rest of the country and the world, that is a lot of money to make a year, but in the world of professional athletes (even skiing), that's nothing. Plus, if you're not a top-name pro, you make much much less. Probably in the mid-5 figure range if I were to take a guess.

Thats the answer i was lookin for! Yeh i realise only the top few skiers actually make bank and most only make enough to scrape by. I was just curious as to how much the top guys do make. Cheers! +k

Pretty funny to read...;-)
Some facts for you...

A ski racer ranked around 10th in the world in their discipline makes about 150 000 Euros/year. Top racers that are in the top in multiple disciplines (3-5 skiers in the world) making 1 000 000 Euro+. Bode at 3-4 000 000 euro
Freesking is not there yet, but not far off either (if you disregard Bode..;-)
Thought you would be interested...
