How much do you care about the environment?

Not sure if anyone has been following this, but it makes me sick to my stomach. The Senate is close to allowing oil drilling in the Artic Refuge to decrease our dependance on foreign oil. Unfortunately this will only drop prices one cent/gallon at the pump 20 years from today.

I'm sure if you're reading this you love and respect the outdoors. Hopefully you can take a second and check out what the NRDC is all about and how you can help by simply signing a petition.

thats been going on for years. though i believe each time it gets through the house the senate knocks it down.

fuck that that is just wrong, instead of switching off forign oil we just need to get of oil in general. Seriously people in the US and canada are just so lazzy. Most people in europe will walk more then a mile before they feal that they need to drive, also bike to school/work people, I live about 5miles from my and it takes me 10-15 minutes to drive there and it takes me 20-25 minutes to bike there and 15-20 minutes to bike home (up hill vs. down hill) That is really only ten minutes more, I also save about $30 a week by not driving my car. It really was one of the best decisions i have made so far.

^ i agree too. bmw is coming out with a hydrogen car. but in limited supply and mad expensive obviously. i think the whole situation is just fucked really.

If I had my way the restricted lanes would take up most of the highway and there would only be one or two lanes for people driving by themselves. And the toyota hybrid cars are preety good to. Also Bio deasel.

it sucks because the northwest territory in canada has more oil than saudi arabi and mexico also has a ton. Canada's in in oil sands and it costs too much to extract. The reason the US wants to drill is because its the same oil feild that is in Russia. Russia is drilling into it from their country and draining our supply. Still sucks though

I really don't get why they're focusing so much on drilling in Alaska. Not only is it ruining a really cool place that will probably never recover from it, but they're just making a temporary solution to a permenant problem. The amount of oil they expect to get from up there isn't even enough to supply the US for a year. It seems like it would be really obvious to spend our money on finding an alternative energy source, but apparently we should be spending it in a way that keeps us dependant on oil. If this passes I will somehow find a way to be more disappointed in humanity.

nah, you dont have to be disappointed with humanity. you just have to be disappointed with the american government. Alaska is sucha vulnerable ecosystem, with so many species of animals, drilling up there is fucken retarded.

i'm here in sweden for a year and i love the fact that everyone bikes or walks. i tried doing it as much as possible but here it doesn't even seem like people try, they just do. it's faster for me to bike to school than to get a ride so that's a bonus.

you know what the fuck is going on. props for that.

moreover, its not just the united states that need to focus on reducing our dependency on oil, its that we need to show other countries how to do it. north america is behind europe, but instead of trying to pull ahead like they are, we need to help out other, shittier countries, like egypt and other underdeveloped countries that have enough money to buy oil, but arent smart enough to teach conservation. i fucking hate egypt.

I say drill away. There is plenty of space in alaska, and the caribou and geese are still going to be given protection. The small risk of a major environmental disaster is worth the oil we will be getting.

Just because there's enough space for the animals to go around it doesn't make it ok. Oil wells will alter the caribou's migration patterns, much like the two diamond mines in Northwest Territory have completely changed the migration there. There is a huge difference between saying an animal is protected and actually protecting it. Once again I am going to state that we shouldn't waste time and money prolonging the problem, we should focus on actually solving it.

fuck the environment...as long as it helps me...cut the trees...burn em all i care...and definetly drill oil...i need to save money

i am too lazy to read the above comments sorry

When I say a major environmental disaster, I'm talking about an oil spill. Oil spills are the reason people are so so sensitive about oil drilling. Today there have been so many safety precautions put in place since the last major spill that the chance of another is severly limited. I'm not saying a spill is impossible, its just very unlikely. I say keep drilling.

We are focusing on trying to solve it. Until then WE NEED OIL. Even if we had a better alternative it would take years to get the infrastructure to distribute it. I'm sorry but I really don't give a fuck about caribou. Caribou in Alaska don't affect me.

Look how small the proposed drilling area is. 3.13 square miles. Caribou can walk 3 miles out of their way to find food if they have to.

I bet you'd be against it if it was right by where you live. Also, there are people up there that depend on the land for food, and if it's covered in oil rigs and piplines it makes life up there that much harder.

Drilling in alaska isnt going to have an effect on global warming. Its just a matter of where we get the oil from. There is going to be oil and people are going to be using it until we find another energy source.

^ you shouldnt think like that. if global warming keeps at it, you wont be skiing. more importantly the polar ice caps will melt and eventually when all iceburgs and stuff melt lots of places will be flooded.

yeah man... there are 2X as many bikes as cars in the netherlands... but in the US there are almost 2X as many vehicles as there are registered drivers.

I think we need to turn to vegetable derrived fuels like bio-diesel and ethanol, which not only burn cleaner, but the very production of the plants we get the oils from takes all the carbon released from burning vegetable fuels back out of the air. buy diesel cars and run them on biodiesel because its a bit more expensive now.. but its better for the engine, the environment, and it puts money into local farmers instead of foreign oil tycoons in the UEA and Kuwait.

plus it shows that there is a demand for it which will help boost it... if the USA had the same infrastructure to produce biodiesel as it does to produce petroleum fuels... biodiesel would cost half what gasoline costs now.... pretty neat eh!

How close to my house would it be? Cause unless it was within earshot I probably wouldn't care. Maybe there are people that are going to live close to it and that blows for them. I would feel a lot more sympathy for them if they didn't choose to live in a place where the average person would actually want to live. I would also bet a large majority of the people actually work for the oil companies.

word.

^^ why are you calling someone dumb for living somewhere else? ie:alaska! im sure where you live had some good natural resourses and the first nations a couple hundred years ago were pissed when it got modernized. and that way of life is fucking over the world, and now unlike a couple hundred years ago, we know it fucks up the world and that is why it is pissing off the people who live up there, because they use the land to hunt to get meat because shipping meat up there is very expensive.... i take it you have never been to the arctic because if you have you wouldnt be saying that.

Itsbackfliptime, the arctic is actually a really cool place. It might not be the best place in the world to live, but I can say with certainty that it is much cooler than Michigan. So before you go saying that it's a shitty place to live, actually go up there so you can back up your claim...or look our your window, at the least.

its so fucking stupid the oil up there will not last for very long, and it will ruin the environment there. its a completely retarded idea

Fucking Americans

j/k though. Some day we will realize that we can't refund our oil for our national treasures.

for sure man. no one realizes that global warming is already destroying glaciers. and soon enough our ski resorts as we know it if we keep this shit up.

They've been receeding for quite some time now. The mountains around where I live used to have a ton of them but now there are just a few scattered small ones, and you can see all the thousands of layers of ice melting away. Also, look at Glacier Park and its total lack of glaciers...that should be a clue. But apparently warmer temperatures, changing weather patterns, and melting glaciers are not enough evidence for our wonderfully clever president and many american citizens to realize that something is askew.

i'm no tree-hugging hippie, but i'd like to see the earth survive this century. don't drill, get on a bike or walk.

if we dont drill in Alaska then dont complain about being dependant on forgein oil. I hate the people who dont want to drill in AK but complain about our dependance on foreign oil. Dont worry the animals will be ok, they will have heavy protection measures if they do because it so hottly debated.

there is enough oil in anwar to supply this country for a little over 6 months. but 6 months of oil is sooooo wroth destroying one of the worlds last frontiers that truely is prestine. so i say fuck the bears 6 months of oil hot damn that will last us until march if drilling began october 1st. thats so worth destroying something that is irreplaceable.. survival of the fitest

1 more thing those EUROS have on us...MASS transportation hehe we don't even have to give up oil imeediatly and we don't have to drive
