How much do rails damage skis?

OP, sliding rails it self without swaps or spins doesn't necessarily damage your edges to much. It's when you really start Scissoring and setting that back edge that you'll notice them starting to round off. I personally do allot of front swaps so my one edge is super round and cracked (I don't switch my skis on my other foot). Although you can learn from that mistake and switch your skis around so that your wearing in your edges evenly. It's kind of an odc thing though if you don't have matching graphics. Hopefully that helps you out.

i got used to dull edges. i tried skiing on my friends chronic wides that were sharp compared to mine and i could not ski. i kept catching edges. i was flying down one of the winding trails at Jay and it was all ice, i was almost fucked and off the edge

Chronic wides look sick tho.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has this problem. I mainly ride a pair of beat-to-shit ar6s. they still rip it all over the mountain on soft snow and courderoy, but the moment I hit ice I look like I've never skied before. I always thought it was just because I suck lol.

Yeah dude you're not alone. This is just a totally normal part of super beat up park skis.

Hell I can give you a great story on this one:

I was one of the guys that wrote the Freeski level 1 course in Canada. As such, I was also the guy that certified the people who were going to certify the instructors. I think the title was "Master Course Conductor".

I remember this like it was yesterday. There was this other dude they assigned to help me because there was so many people. He was put on the same level as me, and was an old freestyler who came from the CFSA. He thought he was hot shit, and I was just some little park kid who was lucky they let in.

We got into an argument at one point with the class if rails damage your skis. He said that anyone who hits rails should be absolutely able to ski normally, and showed me how beautiful his turns were. I debated the fact that sure he could turn great on ice, but that is because he isn't an actual legit park skier. He didn't ride rails every single day all season long super hard. The argument got pretty heated and at a certain point he said "Give me your skis, I'll show you."

I gladly accepted, showed him my great ski instructor turns on his beautifully tuned sticks and got to laugh as he almost fell over repeatedly screaming "Tabarnak these skis are destoroyed, this is impossoble!"

Of course in the end they still wrote me off as a stupid park kid and I gave up that gig to start working in parks.

Even when I used to compete in halfpipe I would always keep a second set of skis. Rail damage severely hinders your ability to keep an edge in icy conditions, and as far as I can tell there won't ever be a solution for that. Whatever, its just part of it and rails are really fucking fun.

what an ass, I would have loved to see that happen lol. people don't understand how big of an effect gear has on skiing performance. it reminds me of when I went to a bootfitter who was explaining how having a well fitted boot with regards to your skiing style helps immensely with performing on the snow. he told me "a lot of people like to say it's the indian, not the arrow... but those people are talking bullshit." obviously it does come down to skiing ability and not just gear, but even torin would be having some trouble if you threw him on some rental boots and a pair of old ass afterbangs and told him to hit the half pipe.

I wouldn't fuck with a pair of beat up park skis in the pipe either, that sounds like certain death. I guess skiing shitty on ice is the price you have to pay for hitting rails, but who likes skiing on ice anyways? I've never heard anyone say they were excited to go slay some ice. rails are way more fucking fun.

You got me there! haha I'm from the midwest... I ski Wilmot Mountain, longest run maybe 15 seconds

well shit I ski there too.... one of the few on this site

People need 2 pairs of skis on hand. 1 for park, and 1 for non-park skiing, That's why park can be a big turn-off if you want to stay gay (ie happy.)

You really needed to say gay?

Yeah.. I am formally going back to the old usage of the word as of a few days ago. I really didn't want to post this img into this thread or mention anything about HC, but anyways..

How tf did you find this

I was looking through top member and clicked on quazbotch and realized he had been around for a while so i thought it would be funny to revive some of his old threads

What the fuck kind of thread is this garbage.

Hit the fucking rail and go skiing do whatever the hell you want on the mountain. If you suck too much ass and cant ski after hitting a few rails and cracking a few edges than go home.

Would you want to ski an icy race course or an icy steep on skis that you use on rails everyday and have fucked up edges? You shouldn't. The people in this thread who know what they are talking about. I would love to see you try to compete on an icy race course on skis that have been destroyed by skiing rails, that would be funny.

I mean, if you're competing wouldn't you have a pair of race skis? Also if this is the case why would you be hitting rails on your razor sharp racing skis?

Just seems dumb to me that someone would ask if rails damage skis, of course they do.

That makes sense. I would think most people would have separate skis for racing, but if they don't skiing an icy race course would not be fun on skis with fucked up edges. I think the point is that sliding rails does have an effect on the edging ability of that ski.

I agree. I don't see how someone can fail to know that rails will effect edging ability on skis.
