How many times should I be falling???

So last night I fell for the first time this season doing a 3 over a 35 foot step up at my home resort. I'm 26 years old so I am no longer fearless, and I keep myself from falling by practicing a shit ton and slowly progressing. I am curious as to how many times good park skiers fall during a normal park session??? Keep in mind the fall did NOT hurt one bit but and it actually gave me some confidence! I want to make sure I am progressing at a good pace, that is, falling is a inevitable part of progression.

i fall every run and dont progress worth shit. then again i must realize that i have no ambition in the park.

Almost double the age of 80% of the kids on NS..at least we can count on you not creating any threads about wanting to suck tom wallisch's dick and how cool afterbanging with you tall tee is
Im 23 and have slowed down on progressing so much..once you start to grow up and have responsibilities you realize you can't be throwing your body all around the mountain recklessly...I think I've hit my peak with landing 7's I guess now I'm just gonna work on style
Falling too many times isn't a bad thing...its the only way you learn!

Depends, on days when you're really pushing yourself to try and learn new tricks you will fall a bunch. On days when you take it easy and lap the park over and over, doing tricks you're comfortable with, you may not fall at all.

Yeah I took an 8 year hiatus from skiing throughout highschool and college and I just got back into it 3 yrs ago. I quit skiing because I thought I had the sport mastered, I could 720, screamin seamen 360, 540(mind you twin tips werent invented) and cork my spins. In college I found out one of the kids I used to beat in mogul comps 4x a year turned pro....that inspired me to start skiing again.

If your not falling your not pushing yourself, i find that the more i try and the harder things i do i fall but thats just part of learning and skiing everyone falls and i fall alot more than most people.

the way i ski, usually at least once a run and maybe one "badish" (double eject/goggles around mouth/ helmet halfway off) once every few days. all really depends how hard i wanna go on the day. but learning to fall is deff the key to keeping your health.

if you're not falling, you're not trying.

I'm 25, and I fall at least once a day. I ski a lot of cliffs/pillow lines, not so much park. as far as park skiing goes, I don't fall that much. I wash out on the big spins sometimes. I'll do my really hard tricks off backcountry booters so when the inevitable bail happens upon landing, it's into powder.

don't let the fall stop you from progressing. If anything falling should help, humans do learn from trial and error after all.

I fall multiple times a day lol. Usually I don't make it down to the end of the jump line when I'm trying to get new tricks hahahaha.
But just push yourself as much as you feel comfortable, falling doesn't hurt unless you REALLY eat shit.
Try to just do stuff in a smart way when progressing too - if you want to 270 on to a down rail, then 270 onto a box, then onto a down box. Then you're safe to try it on the rail. If you want to do rodeos on jumps, then learn it on tramp or on a pow jump, then take it to a step up or step-over type jump, and then practise it.
You don't have to measure how much you fall, but a bit of an I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude towards falling is good. Its good to be pretty confident - you might fall more, but you'll progress more too. Confidence almost always results in more progression and more safety.

I'm 23, and I fell 5-8 times on one 35 foot jump on Monday. I probably took 30+ falls total over the past few days, but I learned three new tricks. You never learn if you don't try new things, and new things almost always involve falling.

For me it all depends on the day. Some days I'll fall on tricks I thought I had on lock while other days I'll try new tricks and never fall. But on average I usually fall down like 3-5 times other than that I can usually manage to ski away from stuff.

when sking boxes/rails I'd say I fall many times during a day of skiingfor park jumps I didint use to fall often, because before attempting a new trick I always had it perfected on tramp. for example i learned cork sev my first try (not tryna claim), but then within a week i got hyphed and went for rodeo. had a couple of gnarly crashes, was already tired, but tried it last time cause i had a feeling its gonna go well and i overshoot the jump, torn my acl and havent skied since july... so dont push youself too hard, especially if you already skied alot that day.

You can get away with not falling for some things but I think a good skier falls more in a day than a bad one in a month.

If I don't fall on any hits in 1 run, you will see a fucking happy guy standing down in the liftline. I fall ALL THE TIME. Unless it's my first lap through, which are straight-airs to get comfortable and feel the park out.

This is going to sound super hardcore gay, but i usually leave the hill always hurting somewhere. I get pissed at myself if I don't throw what i wanted to try that day.....

btw... i'm 30

I fall all the time trying new things..but like its been said no pain no gain. Im not sayin when your trying new things, you should expect to fall. But it just happens. I feel so stoked after i fall a bunch trying something then finally getting it.

I'm 30 on Mon :-(

This site makes me feel old... :-(

But fuck it and huck it.... only as old as you feel... plus I eat shit with the best of you!

i fall a ton. but who cares.i have found that the fear of falling is usually much worse than the actual fall

There's no set amount of falls one should have in order to progress. Like others said, if you aren't falling, you aren't trying hard enough. If you are falling every time, you are trying to hard and need to ease up a bit. There is a little window that is a good amount of falls and landings that will help your progression and confidence without yourself getting hurt. You just need to find it.
And don't let your age fool you. You are younger than you think. There is a guy that I ski with time to time who is 33 I think, and stomped his first 9 last season. There are also people who are older than that that still hold it down.

i fall all the time. mostly when trying new stuff though. prolly like two or 3 times everyday i ride and maybe 2 super horrible falls per week. i ride 4-5 days a week.

Ok then - Some Science...

It is reported that it takes the Human brain about 1000 repetitions of any one movement for it to become "Familiar" and repeatable almost subconsciously..

So if you've fallen once trying a new trick - you only have another 999 bone crunching, winded pain slams left to endure....

Happy Days!!

Never ever do stuff when you know it's your last run of the day, it's cursed! The cork is what I'm hoping for... Have it locked on tramps and into water.

i usually fall about 3-4 times a day unles im skiing rails which is way more then, but on jumps usually only 3 -4

man i fall so much, broken both my thumbs, got a concussion, broke my nose, shit happens and its pretty funny.

how do you only fall once so far this season?

i ride every day and fall probably 30+ times.

even when im not pushing myself, i eat shit alot. sometimes i just tip the fuck over.

i think you arent falling enough....

I would recommend hip pads for sure and stretching a lot. Stretching will help prevent you from getting hurt when you do fall. I'm not as old as you by any means but I fall all of the time. It gives me a confidence boost because the next time I try something I know that if I fall it won't be too bad so you lose some of the fear of falling. Falling is a part of the sport and a major part of progression so do what you can to keep from getting hurt when you do fall and try not to worry about it.

well if you have your shit down, you should fall only about once every like 5th run, and by fall i mean a slight mishap where you just slide out a bit on a landing.

When I'm doing tricks I have on lock I abrely ever fall

but

most of the time I'm trying really hard to progress so I typically fall at least once a run, (maybe a little less).

Exactly. Oftentimes it takes a fall or two, when you're learning new tricks to get over it. That said, you need to learn how to fall as well. A lot of injuries happen because people don't know how to fall, and get injured when it could have been avoided. I also agree with everyone who says that falling is important for progression. If you're not falling, you're not progressing. Just take it all in stride and laugh the fall off--the worst is getting frustrated over falling: have fun, relax and don't take things too seriously.

Im 22 and i fall at most once a day. I dont hit jumps over 40. I dont spin past 180 except on rails. Fuck progression, its all about the style. I progress w/ my style, little tweaks, taps, shifties, butters. I guess its all how you look at skiing. I dont mind not progressing much, i just get stoked on being out there.

Pow/pillows is another story, ill try to progress in that as long as i live. Falling on hard packed snow hurts too much these days. Get yourself some protec hip pads too, they are they shit.

i fall a lot through out the day, mostly it is just stupid shit i do whne i mess around but when im trying new stuff it takes at least seven crashes before i get it right..

i find that when you are actually doing something that is potentially dangerous your body tends to take care of it, so you cant hurt yourself too badly. early season this year though i was just skiing down a run and wasnt paying attention, i kneed myself in the mouth and bit all the way through my tongue, and that is the worst i have gotten hurt skiing. (knock on wood)

I'm 23 and am still progressing well every time I ride. I don't throw down on rails too hard but have a big bag of tricks of jumps and hits and am still pushing myself to improve. That being said, I fall probably about 2 or 3 times per session trying new things.

the problem with falling and getting hurt at my age (26), is that I still have to get up and go to work on monday morning. That's why I progresse my skiing at my own paist. I know I can't compete whith some 16 year old park rat. The important thing is to just have fun with it. And yes, learning how to fall is very important to provent injury.

haha sorry that sounded pretty cocky. I have a few old pics from when I was in 5th grade I will try and scan and upload. One pic in paticular is an inverted 360 daffy. You would definitely get a kick out of my outfit and old rear entry boots.
