i go in the bc i carry a tranciever shovel water and some nature valley bars and never alone

i carry a shovel and a camelback but thats it. i dont go on intense all day hikes though. mostly just loveland pass or berthoud pass

^^ no need to waste money on an avy lung...if your caught in a slide that big your very likely to be killed by trauma not suffocation...save the money and take an avy course instead...there are about the same price

I ski almost nothing but BC, I always take this medical kit thing I have and usually carry those little fuel cubes and some matches in there too, and a beacon, and my poles are a probe when you take them apart but the guys I go with take on like every other time and a shovel, GET A METAL SHOVEL, alot of times the snow gets so hard after avys that plastic ones just suck. always go with someone, and get an avalung if you are going to ski bigger lines and stuff, Waynewong, did you know only 10% of avalanche victims die from trauma? 85% die from suffocation, trust me avalungs are a good idea. And if you feel motivated read the book snow science.

I did all the time while I lived in CO but I never bought or carried with me any of the important stuff. Only water and some snack bars. I guess I was too cheap. I know it wasn't smart, but I was never in any high risk areas.

actually I believe its more like 40% of avalanche fatalities are trauma induced, so the best idea is to not get buried at all.

but to answer the question i always carry a beacon, shovel and probe whenever i leave the resort

 
i'd say a ton of this site goes into the BC but if you go take the right gear, proble, beacon. shovel, pack H20 the correct knowledge of the area and conditions and a friend who you know knows how to rescue and has been trained along with you. don't fuck around in the BC its dangerous and needs to be taken more seriosuly

The avalung thing is kind of a tough call. I was just given one as a gift, and I'm not too happy out about it. I think I'll wear it when skiing on pow days in the BC, but other than that, a lot of the terrain I ski, a slide would much more likely kill me from trauma than getting buried... Then again I'm still holding out on a helmet too, so maybe I'm just a dumbass.

I always carry the probe, shovel, transceiver. One other thing I'd recommend - always take a headlamp. One of the most important survival items in my opinion.

 
yes, i'm sorry. ^

i dont have any BC, but if i did, i would most likely shell out the cash for probe, beacon, shovel, and avalung. i'd rather not die from something i could have prevented.

i wish we had enough snow to get an avalanche. just once. oh well. no safety gear needed at my local bc... no big lines either

Good god. There aren't any safety checkpoints when you head out into the hills. You are actually responsible for taking whatever safety knowledge/equipment you want. Personal responsibility, doesn't sound like you're ready for it.

tweaks - who are you to judge? You admit you know nothing about the subject. Avalanches are deadly, and none of these gizmos do you any good if you get wrapped around a tree on the way down. It's a matter of personal preference where to draw the line with safey equipment. One of the most experienced BC skiers in our mountain range often doesn't take a beacon while out by himself. He has his reasons, and it's his business. I always take my beacon, alone or not, but I don't judge him for it.

 
matt, all you need is me. just carry me on your back when you go into the back country. if you get caught in a slide i will wrap around your head to create an airpocket. you can also suck the air out of my lungs if you run out of fresh air. I can dig you out when you get buried ( i was one of the best diggers in my sandbox when i was little!). If you get hurt and can't walk I can carry you out. If we both can't walk I can act as a safety blanket. We can both get naked and cuddle to preserve body heat. You don't even need a beacon because I can yell really loud.

Well obviously there's no signs or checkpoints or any of that shit taht tell you to.

But Seymour isn't dangerous enough to need any of that shit.

You hike for 10 minutes, you have numerous spots to build jumps. It's really not avalanche territory at all.
