Hi Guys. Im new here. Nice to meet ya!

I went skiing for the first time last year at xmas in Courchevel - France. I had a great time. It was my first time and I think I did pretty well, had to learn off my friends basically. By about the fourth day I could ski downhill (not real steep mind). I could manage turns to my right but not my left. Dont know why though...

Anyway how long before you guys became great? i.e sharp turns, going fast downhill etc?

I want to go again this year, but I dont know if my friends will be up for it. Im well gutted :(

I dunno really know, I started skiing when I was 4 or 5. I have skied pretty much every weekend I could since then. Just keep at it, if it is something you love it shouldn't take too long.

I've been skiing probably 11 years or so, I'd say I really got into a comfort zone after having gone about 15 times or so. From that point on I only had to correct more technical things such as being more forward in my stance. As far as jumping and jibbing. Jumping is hard to say because before we ever had tables there was always stuff to kind of mess around on, but I'd say a year with a table and 3's through 5's weren't bad (w/ grabs). Rails were pretty easy (dunno if being a skateboarder helped though) so I learned those in about a day. Yea good luck, the more you're out there, the more comfortable you'll be on your skis. Good luck.

its different for everyone. it depends on how often you ski and how hard you try. it took me a whille because i was young and didnt have control of my hole body

i like to burn things

i can do a summersault

I've been skiing since I was 5, so 13 years, and I'm always improving - it's a constant learning curve. Get some lessons and you'll improve a lot.

A friend of mine skiboarded for two and a half seasons then when he skied for the first time EVER he wass carving and goign the same speed as me within one run. People will say you look 'gay' on skiboards, but they are an awesome learning tool.

It took me about 1 year of really skiing to get as you call great. I'd still consider myself improving. For me at least, my friends were really good and had been skiing forever, and i had just started so I had to get good to keep up with them cause they wouldn't wait for me. So that helped a lot. And then just being on the hill all the time skiing with people who are better than I was, helped my progression in skiing. Good luck getting better, its the best thing in the world, hope you enjoy it as much as i do.

Rock an roll!

If thats what your interested in for now, take racing. Lots of going fast downhill stuff, and you will learn fast. I commend you on actually wanting to learn to ski, instead of not even knowing and trying 360's like all the kids now

I don't know how long it took me really cause ive skied all my life, i mean i think if your older it'll take you a year or to to be able to handle most stuff, butto ski anythin and make it look good definately takes a few years

I agree with cruz. Not to be a dick and get into a pissing contest, but I don't know anyone who's great after a year of skiing. I don't care how good of an athlete, how natural you are.......how many days you ski in a season, it's really hard, no wait.....impossible to be great in a year.

You might be 'doing great' and learning quick, but your'e not great yet.

Cruz is right, learn SKIING before you learn to jump.

On a happy note;

I think you can learn some cool stuff in a year. You can learn how to jump properly, carve great turns, maybe even ski some steeper stuff with a few bumps on it.

Props to those that (as cruz said) want to learn how to ski along with some newschooling. It's important!

ive been skiing for a long time and i still dont really consider myself great at anything, except maybe mooching off of my friends at lunch time, but you progress daily and just dont stop learning. but, maybe the word you were looking for wasnt great but some other word i cant currently think of.

I agree that you can't be great in a year, but what he gave us as great is very easy to do in one year. The whole thing about going fast and turning and all that. It takes many many years of skiing to become great by all standards.

Rock an roll!

think about it, if you are a really natural athlete and are dedicated, you only have to wait a couple of seasons before you are absolutely amazing, case in point chris turpin. but thats rare. i say after a season if you work hard enough you can have your basics down, and start jibbing the second season. good luck.

Sounds like you're doing well, man. You should keep working at the tricks and 'get good' at skiing at the same time. On your way down to the jump work on your carving turns, angulation, pole plants, absorbtion etc.

Go fer it.

i still suck

I've been skiing for seven years and the only reason I learned how is because i could get ten dollar lift tickets through my school. I also got free lessons. Last year I was the best skier in my entire school.

I ussually go like ten times a year. and for seven years. So that means I've gone skiing 70 times in me entire life. YEah thats sounds about right.

Ive been skiing for 7 years since I was 8, and have been jumping since then too. My dad was a hot shot mogul skier before he messed up his knee, so he was encouraging me to do 'double helicopters' and 'mobiuses' since I was 8

ive skied probably about 70 times in my life. i just started 2 years ago, but wasnt too hardcore until this year, and it all came to me really quick, kind of like RS4life i can spin to 9 and have started learning corks, and other flips. rails have come really easy to me, i can do just about anything on a rail. im not great yet though, dont know if i ever will be but, just keep at and you'll catch on quick
