It's to do with the angles of the parts in the secon version - the whole shape is slightly different to the whole shape in the original. A teacher explained it to us one year. Loads of stuff online about it - just search.

i told a kid already...its not very hard its just super hard to explain

yeah ive seen that before, i accutally cut it out, they are different trinagles, on is just a tiny tad bit bigger, but yeah

go listen to some emo. those whiny guys feel your pain.-linemaverick5...

^theyre both the same size....its just that since the little one is up front then the orange has to be moved out to make up for the smallness and the orange has to be out to make up for the red one cuase its bigga

no way I just went through it in photoshop and the triangels are the exact same size, this is creepy, give me a long, correct explanation please

Look at the green and red triangles - they are not similar (ie. they have different angles). The red one is 3 tall by 8 wide and the green one is 2 tall by 5 wide. Therefore the green one has a steeper gradient than the red one. So in the first picture the whole shape is slightly convex and in the second it's slightly concave. It's this difference that poduces the 'hole'.

Got that wrong there, other way around: the whole shape is slightly concave (ie. like a kicker transition) in the first picture and slightly convex (ie bulging outwards) in the second.

has anyone else noticed the outside tip of the bottom green one? it looks kinda tampered with. its an extra square long, just look at the grid lines in it

signatures are overrated.

Read my reply above - that's how it's done. Take a look below - this is the same blue line drawn from point to point. The difference is pretty subtle but it all adds up to one square to produce the 'hole':

using some simple trig, you can see that the angle of the green triangle is 21.8 degrees, while the angle of the red 20.6 degrees. that is why they are of different sizes. just to add on to what was said in hte post above me.

Em, that's exactly what bam and I have showed.

ok, the slope of the blue line is the same, some simple trig will point that out

√(13^2+5^2) = √194= 13.92...

there is a 21.8, 90, and 68.2 degree angle on the green triangle

and a 20.5, 90, 69.5 degree angle on the red

the big triangle has 21, 90, 69 degree angles, i can see how it works, but i cant think through it, oh well...

its has to do with the area of the triangle, and the hypothenuse, technically if the triangle bases and heights are the same( which they are), then, i think, the hypothenuse should be the same length,. thats not was happenining though,

laright, I'll try to explain it as simple as possible.

The red triangle has less slope (it isn't as steep) as the green one. Therefore, because they are different slopes, although it appears to be the same shape.. it is now... see below. (look at the pink arrows. see how the triangles don't interesect the same points???)

Next, here is an over lay of teh two triangles... notice the difference between the two hypotenuse (LONG SIDES).

if you don't feel like reading, just look at this picture
