How "green" are skis?

as far as recycling goes, cna they really be recycled? what happens to all of the pros old battered pairs of skis?
 
i just think that in a day an age, where global warming is clearly taking affect, and cmpany's are trying to become more eco friendly, there should be some measures taken to reuse some of these materials
 
im sure they could recycle the edges but it would suck balls to whoever has to pull that shit off.
 
I wonder if Al Gore skis.

Seriously though, I'm sure if you tried hard enough you could recyle all the parts of a ski, but I'd hate to be the guy responsible for separating all those layers.
 
There are a few companies that use sustainable or dead wood (lib tech). But most of a ski is made up of petroleum products and is pretty tough to recycle.
 
you sir are correct. I have 3 shot skis, 2 with 3 shot, and one with 4. They are amazing. I suggest everyone make one and then use the shit out of it
 
Well as long as skis are going to ski swaps and rental shops after people are finished with them they could be used multiple times, as for me. My skis are usually shot now so I dunno...
 
glue 3 or 4 shot glasses on the ski, evenly distributed then fill them up with whatever alcohol you want and 4 people can take a shot at the same time.
 
yea but you would burn up so much energy recycling them that you'd do more harm than good.

shot skis, fences, and chairs/benches are the best ways to use old skis that I've seen.
 
Armada uses 100 percent sustainable wood cores. FESC is a European organization that governs sustainable wood. Sustainable wood is grown for the purpose of cutting down and does not interfere with natural forests.

As for recycling skis, Europe is already addressing this issue. I haven't been able to look directly what practices are being done, but I do know most skis are separated from landfills. I don't think they're re-used, but I'm sure this is part of a larger initiative.

You can make ski fences, chairs, racks, shotskis and a bunch of other stuff. Use your creativity, help the environment and get wasted w/ eight people simultaneously!
 
well, there are a few companies that make ski chairs, which are pretty cool. I'm saving my skis so that when i have enough i can make one
 
benches and chairs and shelves and garage wall hangings and sleds and stuff and if all that fails donate them to goodwill. cause some skiers actually are poor and would very much appreciate picking up a pair of destroyed twin tips at goodwill for $20.

I volunteer for the Ruby Hill Rail Yard which is a collab. between Winter Park and Denver Parks and Recreation to put boxes/rails on a denver sledding hill and it's free to the public. Just like 3 hours ago when I was volunteering there on the park crew there was a hispanic guy charging the boxes with like 1980's era straight skis. about 3 times he landed switch and dug his tails in and got destroyed. I asked him about getting twintips but he had no money. So I explained how he should boil the last 8 inches of his skis and put them under a door and bend them up a bit. Bit of a tangent, but the whole point is DON'T THROW SHIT AWAY. other people want to use it and we already have too much trash around.

REUSE

RECYCLE

Most importantly, they are IN ORDER. Reducing is the most important, Re-using is second, and Recycling should be the last option. Recycling takes a lot of energy/resources, the others don't.

Please take this advice for everything, not just skis. It's so easy if you get in the habit. save the world!
 
god damn it. im really getting sick of this whole green crap. recycling you skis isnt going to do shit. and im pretty sure that no one is that concerned about being "green" if you ski at all so just stop the bs. if you cared you wouldnt ski. plain and simple. just take those old skis and throw them in the trash and take your heads out of al gore's butt.
 
bro you gotta start somewhere. this is what pisses me off when someone doesnt want to do the little things because "it wont do shit" ya it wont but its a start. things build up in time, it will encourage others to follow suit. its not that we care so much that we wouldnt ski, but why not help the enviornment in any way we can without sacrificing our love for skiing? get your head out of your ass and open up your eyes and realize every little thing helps. It may not change the world, but it couldnt hurt it.
 


its not that hard to figure out a way to recycle skis and snowboards. its not like u have to have ur head up al gore's ass to try to find a way to recycle skis. u just have to have sum motivation and intelligence. apparently u cant perceive the possibility of that, which isn't hard to perceive, which means u must be dumber than the average person, so wutever comes out of ur mouth has probably already been thought of, so it doesn't do anybody any good for u to open it, or type, for that matter

global warming does not sound like a good thing for cold weather sports, so how about supporting conservation efforts

and why would u throw ur skis away, make shot skis at least, its mad easy, don't u like to party??
 
If you want to make a really cool shot ski go to the hardware store and look for some rubber cups that a shot glass will fit into nice and snug, I found some rubber crutch bottom replacements that were perfect. Drill holes in the ski using the same bit you would use for mounting bindings, 3.5, make sure you space the holes far enough apart to allow for people to stand side by side. Next drill a hole in the bottom of the cup and place a washer in it and screw it to the ski. Insert shot glass and enjoy. When you want to clean the glass you can take it out. If you break a glass it is easily replaced. Voila!
 
I like you're strong opinion, but your ignorance shows. skiing is not inherently terrible for the environment. foot accessed backcountry riding is a ridiculously "green" activity. better than a saturday at home using up electricity watching TV. MAYBE you have an argument against park skiing because of all the things that go into making/pushing all that snow around to build jumps. but for the amount of people that get use out of it, it's still pretty negligible. taking public transportation to and from work every day (which I do) does soooooooo much more to help the environment (not to mention lessening our dependence on foreign oil, and helping end needless wars) than my sunday ski habit hurts it.

Also, this all or nothing attitude is the worst possible situation. It's NOT 100% green life, or 0% and f*&k the environment. Everyone is on the scale somewhere. Here in america we're all on the bad end of the spectrum, using proportionately way more of the earth's resources then people in other "3rd world" countries. If everyone on earth lived like americans, we would be in huge trouble.

make little changes. next generation will make a few more. innovations will help us along. eventually we will get ourselves out of the trouble we're in.

"green" is trendy, but some trends are good. like wide skis. accept it and help it along.

 
you guys preaching that every little bit helps, you're wrong. An entire lifetime of sustainable efforts can be comprimised in one day by the super rich. 
 
of the 6 billion people in the world, we are the super rich.

but anyway, you're right (the really really really rich [.001%]). so they're really the ones that we have to be telling.

if it's a huge movement of the people, and everyone is doing it and

considering it important however, the rich will follow suit. soon if

you flagrantly destroy the earth with bad environmental decisions it

will be socially looked down upon (even the super rich don't like

that). this is what we have to progress towards.

finally, there are a lot of poor people, so even the super rich being

able to outdo in a day a lifetime's worth, we still out-number them.
