How Fat?

Alright, I'm most likely going out West next year for school, either Seattle or Vancouver. So this summer I plan on buying some fat skis for cheap and maybe some other backcountry gear if I can afford it.

Right now I'm thinking Big Troubles, which have a 90 waist. Thoughts? I mean I know pow skis go alot bigger (Prophet 130s), but at a certain point it has to get to the point where it would just be cumbersome unless I'm in six feet of fresh.

If you're going to used them regularly, try to get some that have a waist between 90-105. You'll be able to ski something like that every day if you want to, and they'll float really well in the powder. Only go over 105 if you're just using the skis on big powder days exclusively, it's a lot harder to turn a huge ski on hardpack.

Thanks

I'm thinking fat twins as I would like to try some backcountry booters.

So what are people's thought on Big Troubles, Seth Vicious's, Prophet 100's, and I'm open to suggestions.

yeah dude i live in seattle theres some good skiing here. look into some pistols or vicious's, those r good skis as well

chronic wides have a waist you're looking for...personally i would go with skogen 04/05 just cause it looks cooler and the chron wide/skogen are the same ski pretty much. but if you want a this year ski id say seth vicious or big trouble for sure

For skis the pistols or vicious are the best in the PCNW. you also say you want to get some BC gear, first warning take a class before you go out there (BC) or our snow will eat you alive.

I'm skiing Big Troubles as my everyday ski in Whistler this year. They work for me on groomers - I can still make tight turns on them if I really want to. They're nice in powder but maybe a bit stiff for pure park. I'd recommend them or else Karmas, Pistols/Vicious or MSPs.

I would think something big, soft and fat like the Salomon Guns would work well as a BC/pow ski.

They're expensive as hell, but the Mantra and Gotama look like very nice skis, though I bet the Guns would be easier to maneuver due to being a lot softer flex.

Yea there seems to be alot of great choices. I do plan on being smart in the backcountry (aka doing the courses, using beacons, etc..).

Might be a stupid question, but do the Big Troubles feel like trouble makers, just perhaps a little more stiff and wider obviously? I did like the trouble makers and a stiffer version would be pretty cool.

I think the Gotoma's and Mantra's wouldn't lend themselves to carving much. Keep on throwing stuff out there. Sorry to be vague, but you guys are giving good responses and its helping me formulate it in my head. I just have no feel for pow skis.

I haven't skied the Troublemaker so can't really compare them. The Big Trouble has the same srpingblade construction, but is a lot stiffer (from flexing them in the shop). They're not the liveliest of skis - not a lot of pop to them, but they're damp and really stable. I really like them so far, hopefully they'll break in and get a bit softer though.

If you're a lighter guy, ARVs or Guns would be really good for you too.
