How fast have you skied?

next time you try to lie. Remember that you can't out lie hard maths. To travel one mile in 7 minutes 21 seconds your average speed would be 8.2 mph. Not 13.4 mph. Ja Cuse!

Thanks professor

Fastest right now is 52 bombing down white heat at Sunday River. Would upload a photo but I'm in school with no service rn. I plan to go full send and break 60 this season. Got some new wax that I can use

about 65 on the Harikari in Mayrhofen on JJ's (Europe's steepest run). Woodsy came down after me and switch straight-lined the entire run quite possibly a bit quicker

Not sure if it's quite as steep as the "Swiss Wall" in my home resort. But it's up there for sure.

Yeah i maybe wrong with the Europe bit, defiantly Austria

I just checked. Swiss Wall is 40° (84%), Harakiri 38° (78%). So it's definitely very similar regarding steepness!

good fun for a bit of straightline speed !!

you guys seem like good people to ask-- what places are known for the longest, steepest groomers? that shit is fuuuuun

I went behind my buddy with the app and he clocked 78 mph, it was terrifying. I wanna hit that 80 tho, I will, one day.

Drafting at speeds like that is so fun.

We we used to do drills for skicross just bombing groomers, drafting and leap-frogging each other. That was the best.

which country are you looking at visiting?

eh, none, im poor. but ive been curious about it in general!

if you know the answer (/an answer/some answers) for the US, thatd be great, but im also curious about europe, and maybe one day i can visit

never skied in the US bro but if your coming to Europe and wanna scare yourself on or off piste then France is pretty good for that .....Chamonix, Tignes, La Clusaz to name just a few. There are no restrictions here so you go out managing your own risks. Italy, Switzerland and Austria all have their fair share of great steep challenging pistes and freeride but far too many to list unless you have a specific resort you plan on visiting

Not the fastest I've skied but any means. But is the steepest. 43 degrees is fucking etch

How long was the slope? You could go back to that place and go faster on a slope like that if its long enough.

bout 250 metres in length. Just from the top of my head looking at the graph

Sick dude, thanks for the answer. Hope to make it out there some day

Wow now that's fucking steep!

Just ripping down the bottom of Mens DH at Lake Louise, very steep and fast pitch. This year I want to throw on a buddys old race suit and push 150km/hr or about low 90mph.

My fastest (according to the Rossignol app) said I was going 72 mph. I started at the top of the hill on palmer earlier in the day when the snow wasn't quite slush but wasn't ice.

I've been in the 80s on a closed course.

This thread is going to get someone killed, btw.

I don't know about that for me I'v been straightlineing shit for a long time trying to go as fast as possible it is more about finding out not how fast that is. Im not going any faster then I have in the past it's just cool to know.

On the converse i do realize having the hud on my goggles is probably inherently dangerous in both perusing high speeds as well as looking at the number instead of where im going. LOL

72, it was clocked with a speed gun. Gotta love Super-G training. It was scary as shit.

I have a hard time believing anyone can get up to 55+ on non-race skis that are shorter than 190 (even non-race skis north of 190 make me doubtful), full attire (not a speed suit), and on an open public hill. Hitting that speed required 205s, a speed suit, a very aero tuck, a closed hill, and absolutely zero turning at the steepest part.

Anyone who claims they're hitting 75+ and aren't racing is full of it, the average FIS DH speed is somewhere between 85-90, as the fastest is just north of 100mph.

except i can go tuck golden eagle at beaver creek whenever i want and unlike the downhillers im not required to turn.

And you still wouldn't reach the speeds they do because the lack of speed suit, DH skis, and a whole bunch of other factors involving aerodynamics, wax, and more.

im not saying i can hit 100, but hitting a top speed of 80ish and averaging probably in the 50s is definitely within the realm as long as you're on a ski that's big and stiff, have proper wax and are not dressed like a 90s hip hop group.

No. Just no. It takes a lot more than a ski that is big and stiff. The base pattern is really important, as is having a proper cant on your boots so you run a flat base, the snow consistency matters, actually being in a tuck for a long enough time, and frankly having the ability to not freak the fuck out.

I don't think people here realize how fast 80 MPH is on skis. The wind legitimately deafens you. You can't hear anything but howling wind. The G-forces are unbelievable because you have to turn with the hill, most people on this forum aren't strong enough to take a turn like that at that speed.

Averaging 50 mph? Sure, that isn't out of the possibility if you are on that hill, but hitting 80 is. Women barely hit 80.

69.6 mph i think was my best, could easily go faster considering i did that with original SFBs so pretty soft. think if i had some stiffer skis i'd be good for around 80mph on the right trail.

I remember last year swandog, clover, and I were bombing the massive hills we have out here in MN and i think the max we got was like 45-50ish.

This woman hit 150. Not dissing any of your points, just tryna keep the free in freeskiing :)

THIS ^^^

IMO i would bet that even some of the top freeskiers dont have the leg strength to smash 80 plus some might be able

Well this is bullshit. You do realize it's a whole lot easier to hit high speeds straitlining than racing on a course. You most definitely do not have to be on 205 race skis to hit 55+. Length does help with speed and stability but if you have a decent base grind and your ripping on decent size skis you'll be able to reach high speeds.

Either that or some people are just better skiers... Just saying. A good few friends I ride with have clocked well above 60 on non race skis, just takes good conditions, experience and technique. There is an enormous difference between 70 and 85, making up that difference is what separates the good from the great.

To average 55+? Yes, yes you do to be on skis that are that size. Can you hit greater than that speed? Sure, but it goes beyond just straight-lining as I have said. But a ski that is sub-190, especially a non-race ski, will make that speed unlikely as the actions of it will cause almost all people to pull up. Skis get squirrel-y, the tips ripple, edges catch, etc.

Are we talking speed gun clocked? Because that is the only reliable measurement there is. And no one I've seen ever has a speed gun on a hill outside of DHs or SGs.

And no, most skiers are not better than the women on the WC tour who ski DH and SG. Little Lara Gut, all 5 feet 4 inches and 128 pounds, could probably beat 99.9% of the skiers on this forum in a race, especially in a speed event. hell even a straight line because she knows HOW to get that fast. It isn't just point and shoot, at that speed every little thing to reduce drag matters. Why else would they use wind tunnels to perfect tuck positioning, speed suit drag, helmet drag, etc.?

It is amazing how many people here think they've hit 60+. The wind, the way your skis act, the way every little fucking bump is magnified when you hit it, how you have to position your body to reduce drag, etc. it isn't something you just go out and do on any old skis on any old hill.

You don't run a flat base at that speed, you don't have the ideal cant, etc. and you can fuck yourself badly if your ski twitches the wrong way. Why do you think SG and DH skis are so long and stiff? It isn't just to keep the ski from washing out on the turns, it is to keep them stable on the flats.

I hit damn near 65 a couple years ago. I decided it would be a good idea to send it down a black diamond. I stayed up the entire time, but I'm never going that fast again.
