How Far Is Too Far??

I am currently writing a paper for my english comp class and my topic is how the need for media attention adversely affects sports. I wanted to get some opinions because I have seen a lot of new articles recently about how media attention is influencing athletes to take unnecessary risks in order to push the boundaries of their respective sports and gain public attention. Each of us knows that what we do even as amateur skiers isn't without risk, but for professionals, the risks are even steeper. Sarah Burke is a name that comes to mind. She payed the ultimate price for the sport we all love but for what purpose; to learn a trick for a competition?

My question really is how far is too far??? how far can we get before we have to stop pushing and assess what is happening to our sport before more people are hurt?

S.I.P J.P & Sarah

I hate hearing about skiers getting injured or losing their life, but the individual chooses to push limits. With everyone in the sport wantin to progress it is only natural that the whole sport will keep progressing. Its up to the skier where to stop and to not push past their own boundries

the sport would be a ton cooler if the implemented new types of competitions rather than just making the jumps bigger and having bigger rails

^^^ exactly ever since I stomped my first three ive been chasing that feeling. Its more of an individual thing imo

But is it ethical to support this sort of self endangerment. I understand it's a personal decision but is it responsible of us as people to enable it.

Wonder if these pros would still be going bigger and bigger if they weren't trying to keep up with the competition, if the desire to solely be able to do those tricks would be enough to take the risk.

I much prefer watching skiers like andy parry and will wesson who push the limits and innovate in a different direction than just hucking it as big and flipping as many times as you can.

I like watching skiing not gymnastics on skis

You really are blaming Sarah Burke's death to "park skiing"?? there is no such thing as going too far as a sport, you can only go too far as a person, and thats an eventuality.

I'm not blaming her death on park skiing. This thread is an opinion on how far the sport can progress before the risk is too great to progress any further. The reason she was mentioned is because her death is an example of one of the very real consequences when we as skiers push ourselves and the sport harder than what we should.

Yeah but fact is, accidents happen on every sport and thats just how it is. Thats the life of an athlete, you devote your life to the sport hoping for the best.

This. I want SSX-style races more than anything. I also want Ski Cross to get big.

Athletes will keep pushing the limits no matter how high the risks get.

Every world class athlete will continue to progress and take even higher risks, atleast to the point where they have an rather bad injury.

An seperation from athletes wich respect theyr limits and try to push them step by step and not just hucking shit , not even having trained the trick anywhere is happening.

Just think of Joe Murrell( check his blog ).

The problem is that people forget about themselves and pay too much importance on judges and audiences. But it may also come down to money ultimately. Self-regulate or die. Amateurs shouldn't try to be pros. Also, what's the most common injury.. knees? Maybe the knee is doing something it hasn't evolved to do!?

Skiing has always been inherently dangerous, its just we find more ways to huck ourselves each year which may or may not increase our chances of kicking the bucket, so to speak.

I understand this is a paper based on what the media thinks, but who gives a fuck what some dipshit in some big city churning out click-bait that thrives on awful shit has to say? these people have no idea what its like challenging yourself, facing fears, and ultimately achieving what we know as progression, I really don't think we should take their opinions seriously.

We've been asking the same question of "How far is too far" for a while now, ever since doubles and triples became the norm, and my answer is I don't think there is a level of "too far" in skiing we can reach. This is why we love to ski, we love challenging ourselves and progressing, we love to see what we can do as humans and these are kinds of principles I think can be applied to everyday life.

tl;dr reaching levels of "Too far" is what we want to do, why would we stop that? I don't think the fallen legends would want us to cease. Shane/CR/Sarah/JP/Andreas/Roner and anyone else fallen in the line of duty would bitch slap us for being such pussies.

If all of the parks started restricting what you could do on jumps and rails or something like that I would be devastated. We're aware that it is a dangerous sport but it doesn't stop us because we can't stop

and we won't stop

We have already gone too far, look at the number of injuries this season, it went through the roof. Next year is going to be a bloodbath.

I agree. In not too long, xgames will be a quadfest, and there will be no more ACL's in the entire sport of freeskiing.
