How exactly does the Karma System work?

If they told us how the karma system worked, people would be able to exploit it and cheat!

Basically from my understand, it takes into account "many" factors across the site which help to shape how good of a member you are in the community.

Factors such as your member number, post count, time you spent in forums, how others rate you, etc etc. I don't know if this is actually how it works, but from my understanding, its something along these lines.

err thought of something else i wanted to say...

It's like a big equation that takes into account all sorts of stuff to determine ur karma number. I don't think NS will ever release the formula or tell us how it is exactly calculated.

Exactly. It takes in a huge number of factors, it's ridiculous. Only time will tell if it works.

You don't have a choice.

I can actually see where you're coming from though. I quoted it because its an interesting point. People wanted it but don't have to use it now. You still have to go to the profile to see it, and while it will serve purposes it doesn't benefit everybody.

well if they wanted to make kids care about the karma rating they should put it under our icon instead of post count

I have a question(*raises hand)

is karma relative or whatever? Or like if we averaged all the karma of everyone on the site would it be 50. To me it seems like there are alot more positve karma rated people than negative. I know it has to balance out but will the true average be 50 when its all sorted out?

Bang on for all accounts!

We won't release the exact calculation because immediately everyone would go out there and start trying to cheat the system. All I can tell you is that it measures like 20-50 different things you can do as an NS member, and then has a bunch of mathematical calculations to come up with your karma. We can also change the weighting of each metric, so even if you figure it out one day there's nothing that says it won't be different the next.

Currently its not fully implemented... its just a little number in your profile, and there isn't the full ability to rate members posts and threads. However, once the system gets some data in it and we can keep tweaking to make sure the good members are getting good karma, we'll move further forwards with completely implementing it.

Eventually member of the month will be simply chosen out of the karma system, and who knows maybe we can even start rallying prizes for that!

For the time being, if you think someone is just a stand up good guy, give them a few karma points from time to time.

I think the best thing to do with the karma is to put the members karma rating somewhere under their name when they post, this will hopefully initiate some rating thus leading to more active and accurate karma ratings.

I think that is what is supposed to happen when the system is fully loaded. Then my vote is to move post counts to the profile. Switching the info as it is now.

Holy fuck steve...ease up on the hating and wait till its in full swing.

Its like bitching that an alpha/beta version doesnt work, ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO WORK 100% yet.

Its being tweaked here and there on the fly, until they find a good balance that represents what they feel is a generally fair rating.

Nomen.

I know its a new system and people like to comment on it, but give it time. Its still in testing, therefore it isn't perfect right off the bat. You need beta testing like this to find out how the ratings work in a real world environment and how you can adjust before you switch everything over.

Sorry for the brashness, but the hate i've been seeing on this new system is starting to piss me off. Its here, give it time and deal with it. Its a website, not the selection committee for the Nobel Karma Prize. Just sit and wait it out.
