How does NS make money

Notes:

I search barred, found nothing.

It's very likely none of my business, but if you don't ask, you'll never know.

This could be an extremely short thread.

Thus, I begin:

I understand ad revenue, and I know that donations help to fund NS, but one of ElGato's comments sparked a question in my mind. NS is a business, so other than those two I've mentioned, what does NS do to make money?

Selling gear, colabs, sposers, donations

They get all they need from that, they don't spend a ton

makes sense. i mean, how many people are donating every day? i'd be surprised if they average more than 2-3.

Yeah most comes from adverts. I'm fine with that, since finding that out I set my adblock to exclude newschoolers... That said, if you're ad money comes per click, I don't think I've ever deliberately clicked an ad here.

Ads/Sponsorship make up about 90% of the revenue for Newschoolers. AdSense and other ad providers make up a much smaller part of that number, maybe 10%. The remaining 10% would be merch, affiliate marketing and donations. We used to only keep donations as beer fund, but these days we actually do roll them right back in as revenue.

A huge portion of all the revenue gets dumped back into the site to improve it.

no

90 is being broken down into 2 parts

80%= ads/sponsers

10%= adsense

10%= merch, affiliate marketing, and donations.

80+10+10=100

I don't think NS is fully capturing what they could become, I like it a lot now however if they really wanted to take it big (dare I say) openly include the skateboarders and snowboarders of the world. I know its an online skiing community but I just see a larger market of potential and more money for them.

Also they need to make more stickers :)

Its not as easy as you think to branch out into other markets. We have some special sauce here for sure, but at the core there's years of skiing history that have led us to this point.

Immediately deploying into skating / snowboarding would likely be a total disaster. Snowboard.com tried that with their colonies initiative and it was a massive flop that killed their business.

I'll stick with skiing for now.

Back in the good ol days when people we were mailing you bar change for a shiny gold dollar sign.

Yea thats very true, theres a small influx of boarding and skating on here right now but by fully (and officially) introducing it could lead to a site disaster.

Considering YoBeat.Com is kind of similar to NS but for snowboarders and I like NS so much more its not even a comparison.

Keep up the good work!
