How does MSP stay in buisness?

I just realized the other day that matchstick makes ski, bike and snowmobile movies that they shoot in 16 mili and get developed, which costs about 650 bucks for 15 minutes, and bought HD cams which cost from 30,000-100,000, they rent heli copters, hire videographers and probably a lot of other shit. The total percentage of people who freeski is like .0000000000000000001 of the world and even less for biking and snowmobealing so they can't be selling too many copies of their films. I'd say yearbook cost at least 450,000 to make and that would mean they would have to sell around 20,000 copies... Either steve winter is super rich or matchstick is running something illegal to pay for it all.

Sponsors.

Bahahaha... or, you could call it the 'elitist snob' cult. Anyways, my family already owns a country club, so no thanks.

They've been around a while. Sponsors help, and I would think most of them are willing to shell out large sums of money for MSP films. They are usually the top, or near every year. Every movie of theirs I've seen has been my favorite of that year, or one of them anyway. Yearbook is another story. I've wathed it a whole bunch, but it just hasn't grown on me as much as say... Focused. But, however they do it, I think they rock

MSP gets about 1 million dollars a year from sponserships to make their shitty slo motion films

Drop Cliffs not Bombs

your film costs are off by quite a bit - 3 min = more like 70 bucks so 15 would be $350, about half of what you suggested. The filmmakers ride the helicopters with the athletes (who finance their trips on their own from the sponsers). Then they sell the video for 30 bucks a pop to people like us, which there are plenty of to support them financially

I like to ski, I don't like to drive I-70

Yeah sponsors pay a lot of the expense. Think about it, these movies are really just 30-60 minute advertisments. I don't even think about the companies who don't have riders in movies because they aren't brought to my attention in such a huge way. The guys in the movies are THE best skiers in the world and skiing those guys rip on all this nice new gear makes you want to go out and buy that stuff. So movies are a great way for companies to get there riders infront of the public to rep their products.

that's why you pay $30 for a ski movie

i doubt they bought true hd cams. they were prolly the consumer/pro ones, still expenseive but no where near the price of the true cams.

MSP gets six figures from Helly Hansen alone. they get soooo much money its just stupid. the athletes don't finance the trips...back in the day thats how it went but not so much anymore. they have mad dollars to spend, the cost of production is covered by sponsors and then some...then when you sell 25,000 copies making roughly 5 dollars each (minimum depeding on the distributor) your looking at $125,000-$200,000 profit. They have their business shit on lock down.

'how about u call it a double grab? or a japical or critinap'-pussyfooter

YEah THey arent runniny anything illegal! companies pay to have their atheletes to be put into the movies. Real big bucks for it too. In X=ten Salomon dished out soo much cash its says salomon everywhere. and the long segs are all salomon riders olenick, dumont, candide ,Karlstrom thats alot of money right there.

all i buy is msp movies because i know they will be the best (one of the best) movies of the year...it's people like me and everyone else on this site, about 50K members, that buy there movies

Are you feelin me? I'm on a killin spree.

There's nothing to lose when noone knows your name.

sponsorship money makes up for about 80% of the cost of the movies...heli time, and film processing make up the good majority of things

freeride entertainment (msp's sister mountain bike company) does some sheisty activity to fund some of their shit. thats all i can say.

According to Morrison, the athletes DO finance their own trips. He sez he tries to match what he gets from Oakley/K2 etc.

yeah i dont remember where i saw it but i saw a vid where seth said after all heli trips he takes for filming he only ends up making about $3000 a year

Dont forget they also sell a lot of their footage to all sorts of other companies for use in promos, ads, other movies, etc. etc.

They also fucking back stab and knive to keep the little guys down, pulling all sorts of fucking gay shit to stay on top.

Little guys that have jack fucking shit in comparison to them.

Weak sauce... all I can say is what goes around comes around and its coming around fast.

i know i swear msp doesnt even make moves for people to buy they just make them so sponcers will give them money and pay to have there athleats and photographers shiped all over the world

dont get it twisted

They make quality ski flicks, that's how. Sponsors do shell out a lot of money, plus MSP is one the top ''stock footage'' film companies in the world, so I'm sure that helps a lot to. My question is how does TGR get funded?

I have a 16mm cam, and its about $68 to develop a 400ft role of film, and since 16mili rolls film at 24 frames per second, or 36 feet per minute, that means it cost $68 to get 11.11 minutes of film developed. note to mention that is before paying for film and, for someone that does not work at MSP, about 16$ to change 400foot role to miniDV or DVD to edit, which is percisely why I am selling it on Ebay and hoping it pays for a Sony VX2000..anyone wanna buy it by the way?

CUBuffskier I said 650 developed

'Sorry to all those racers out there,' Hall said, 'but in 10 years you guys ain't going to be nothing.'

despite what a lot you people say about msp, they still are on top of ski movie industry i think. Every year they produce a 'quality' film and whether or not people think it sucks-they still hav the majority of people out there that like em. I enjoy all msp movies that ive seen. Never disappointed. Some peopel on this site are waaaaay to negative about shit. Keep in mind they are skiing 'movies' people thats why people talk and shit and everythings a little different. I thought yearbook was good this year despite a lot of base jumping...why ? BECAUSE ITS SOMETHIN DIFFERENT!

Everyone needs to realize that MSP knows their shit with their films, and especially in the business terms of things. Its cool to see these guys in crested butte, who came from nothing, and now steve and murray drive nice whips, own a house, and its all because they really truly KNOW how to do profitable business in this tiny and unforgiving industry. props to my inspiration

I seem to remember someone at TwoPlank Productions making a rather harsh comment about MSP a while back, followed by a hastily written apology...

I'm with Jib This and the rest of you... MSP is going down. There are some bitch ass motherfuckers running that joint. They might make decent movies, but I hope that anyone would with a half mill budget. Despite all their support and experience they've still succedded in making a TON of people pissed at them. Way to go. And sack up Sac.

yo plehouse is so much better than msp. their editing is so much more creative not jsut same movie with different skiin
