How do you ride with out poles?

i have been studying up on the good no polers and i have noticed they all ride similar. is this just becuase of the no poles? is there any type of way to do the no pole? i want to switch from poles to no poles but im afraid of the balance issue on rail slides. what about grabs i want to lern the charles gangier cross tweak. is it easy to transfer to no pole?

man dont even worry about it. just try it out a few times and see how you like it. and balence on rails isnt any different.

remember, hands forward and it helps to pretend that you're doing pole plants when you're learning no poles in the BC.

how do you convert is there some type of process. for example i was thinking of useing shorter poles each week to get used to the weight issue. by the end of the month i should be down to real small poles. i was just going to chop them down myself since i work for a ski shop.

Just ditch them for a few runs a day until you get used to the feeling. It isn't any different than with poles. I'd suggest keeping your hands up or even in your jacket pockets so you are less likely to be on your heels but it isn't that big of a problem.

ahah yeah. it really isnt that big of a deal, i just feels a little different at first. and in my opinon is much less pratical for BC.

Transitioning is important. Cut off your poles at progressively shorter lengths until you get down to the grips, and then when, and only when, you feel comfy enough, drop the grips mid-run somewhere and give'r.

Its not that hard, you just don't bring poles and you ski. I wish i could afford poles but as it is I only ride with poles when my friends have extra ones. The only thing that takes a few times to get used to is spinning no poles

shorten them, but at the last bit, shorten them a bit shorter so they dont quite touch the ground. you will still be in the comfort of your poles but technically starting to ski no poles. balance on rail is dificult. you can not skier slide rails if you do not have poles, its obvious, its like being on a tightrope, only 5050 it and remember have your arms out for balance! and just stick to simple grabs like saftey dont jump to the octopus cross ones yet

take your pole straps off...hang yer poles on a rack...or stick them in your vehicle...go back over to the lift...and get on, with out poles....make runs...ask Andy Mahre for further details...

you really are over thinking this. it's just skiing it's not a big deal. I'd say the easiest way to convert to no poles is by not holding poles in your hand while skiing, it works quite well.

yeah i was used to it after like 2 runs, then i tried using poles the next day and it felt so limiting and shitty, i couldnt stand it. so i threw them as far as i could into the woods, and i havent touched poles since.

Don't worry about it, just ditch your poles for a couple of runs. I thought it was gonna affect my skiing alot but it doesn't and it's really fun. And do you really think that a couple ounces of pole is really going to affect your balance? It will only affect your balance if you rely on your poles ( aka lean on them, use them so you don't fall over on rails etc)

It's just like skiing without them, except you can't push with your poles, meaning sometimes you waddle into lift lines, that's the only negative I've found.

theres an old dude that rides at our hill he carries around one telescopic pole with him and just pulls it out when he is getting on the lift so he can push himself up to it, maybe one of those would help ya

i think that no poles is so much fun. i thought it was really gay until one of my friends stole my poles when i was eating lunch and it forced me to ski no poles. it was way fun and it really wasnt much harder. jumping actually became easier for me.

i do it a lot, but only when im teaching kiddies how to ski

basically, im making the next generation of no-poles skiers

Nah man, just drop them. Keep your hands in front of you when riding. Its not hard, Ive done poles and no poles for quite a while last season. Both are just normal to me now. Plus, with no poles, I can juggle going down the hill.

Just give them to the liftie for an hour or so its just a fun thing to try out! I definitely loved messing around without poles on Saturday, and my balance became way better because of it. It was super fun and I could get grabs with my entire hand rather than 2 fingers. Just try it out for a few hours it's really no big deal.

the real question is...How do you ride with out skis? i saw stephan thomas do it in Seven Sunny Days, is it harder to grab? i know rails would be easier because theres no huge planks throwing you off balance, anyone second this?

ya i was in almost 3 feet of powder the other day and i wanted poles so bad

but just try it out

for me atleast i felt better without poles

I didn't take my poles to PC one day, and the guys i was skiing with were like "oh shit pow on mcconkeys" and i was like alright. It's not that fun shreading knee deep pow in center mounted park skis with no poles, its not fun.

dude you are way over thinking this i went from poles to no poles in a day true i haven't grinded rails without them yet but it really shouldn't be any different since it doesn't feel any different on anything else

in my opinion unless u have super fat rockered skis (like pep) no poles in powder is death, i tried it and it was so hard, in park it is much more practical in my opinion, easier for grabs, easier for hiking features, if u fall u dont bend your poles and they dont hurt u

cool. i found out from a fellow no poler that bamboo works best for the transfermation. becuase of its lack of weight and good amount of flex i have decided to gradually change from poles to shorter poles to bamboo then to shorter bamboo then finally no poles. i no it sounds ridiculous but i think it may actaully work. all let you no tomorw when i test out the transfermation.
