How do you keep your car from rusting into the ground?

I live and ski mostly in the northeast where it's wet and the roads are heavily salted. Most cars I've owned have basically died from rust before their motors croaked. I just bought a gallon of fluid film for my truck which I've heard lasts 6ish months but I'm skeptical with the amount of time I spend driving on newly salted roads.

I know you can get the bottom of your car sealed, but I believe it is best done right after you get the car.

best bet is to move out of that shit hole. time to head west

"Northeast" and "shithole" don't belong in the same sentence unless they are separated by the word "isn't"

lmao dont you live in colorado now?

here is a revised version: the northeast isnt a shithole as long as you hate the sun, are apathetic towards others, love replacing rusty cars, enjoy the company of pill heads and addicts that never left their home town, and are egotistically charged in your fight for the almighty dollar.

Colorado is just that minus rusty cars and the sun, at least I could afford a house outside of here.

the apathetic people are typically transplants or are mad that you are one, the pill heads and homeless people are also primarily but not exclusively transplants, and the egotistical and money hungry people are either transplants or you’re in colorado springs lol.

if the northeast wasnt a shit hole then they’d stop leaving there to come here and bringing their trash tendencies with them. i wanna be able to go to a coffee shop, hear about the baristas day and favorite thing on the menu without some fuck from boston getting mad that my order is taking 45 seconds instead of 7.12 seconds.

also to be clear, i want people to be able to move here and enjoy the lifestyle that i grew up in with tons of neighborly love, appreciation for outdoor sports, pork green chili, and unruly quick yet harmeless shit talk. i think there tons of beauty and lots of space to figure out how to accommodate more people. im def not gonna throw a native sticker on my car or hold some sort of superiority because i got somewhere before someone else (those people admittingly do suck) but that being said these fucks bring their bad tendencies and ignoring the established culture fuckin sucks. be cool, use the left lane for passing, leave cali in cali, the northeast in the northeast, and come tell me how rad your day/weekend was.

I don't think I've experienced a belligerent bostonian yelling at me to hurry up ordering outside of south boston lmao. New England has a pretty good balance of proximity to the ocean/mountains, job opportunities, and cost of living. I live in a place I can afford where I people don't lock their doors, and at any given time I can either sail surf or bike in prime conditions. Couple hours north and I have tolerable skiing without insane traffic or lift lines. Idk maybe I'll move eventually but I like it here.

I made this thread to ask if anyone had any experience with rust prevention measures.

Anyway, just coated my truck with fluid film. Sprayed inside each door, rocker panels, tailgate, frame rails, and basically anything made of metal. Buying by the gallon is definitely the way to go, it was like $50 for the gallon and I didn't even use half. My sprayer had smaller hoses that I used to get into the drain holes of the doors and frame. Bought it in rattle cans and for the same price barely covered the forklift.

sorry to be the guy who derailed your thread. my b

when i served my time in vermont, we bought a new car and they did some sort of spray that had a 6 year warranty of something like that. im sure the dealer cost more than doing it yourself. they also say frequent car washes which was hard to justify cause you just go drive on mud immediately after lol.

just wait till its rusts and then rip it off and then fill the really bad holes in the floor with spray foam

also i have no jack spots left

We send our most unbearable cunts westward and the real ones never leave

i agree that Boston is a toilet

there actually is validity to that. people ‘escape’ to the mountains. they go through some tough shit back home and develop mental/substance issues and then as a reset they say ‘oh ill go do a season in the mountains’ but they havent fully addressed the root of the problem and that problem just moves with them and gets worse.

anyway, most cars after 2015 should have pretty

decent paint that deters rust including the chassis.

WD-40.

lots of it. every year.

Literally Stands for Water Displacement

Also wash your car and underbody after long drives in salt.

I fucking hate your ex wife

I've heard of ppl spraying old engine oil all under the car to seal it for cheap. I've never done it... I'm upstate but not THAT upstate haha

my 97 land cruiser has a valve cover gasket oil leak and the whole engine bay and front half of the frame is rust free and coated in dirt/oil. I have heard that long term it can become acidic and cause issues but who knows.

Yeah I’ve heard of this too, just spray it down with oil and then go muddin lol

Get underbody oiled, then if you happen to have an automatic car wash with underbody rinse, go through that a few (or a bunch) times through out the winter to clean off the road salt and grime

Clean and coat your car when the temp rises above freezing- that's when the salt really starts to work. Most places that offer rust proofing will advise to get it done in the spring and not the fall, but if it's never been done the fall it isn't a bad time to start.

Once it starts to rust, you can't really do anything besides cut it out and weld new metal in place (if it's possible). There's plenty of undercoating systems available, but if they can trap water underneath, and cause even more problems. Realistically, the only solution is to move.
