How do you catch a 20lb snapping turtle?

wanna try reading something before you post? itll make you seem less like an ass

my suggestion is if the pond isnt that big, bet a screen or something and 2 long, thick sticks to tie/nail/staple the screen to and get a buddy and drag it across the whole pond and then when its out of the water shoot it, hit it with a shovel, torture it, or go the "nice guy" way and let it free in hte woods or something
 
u meen a casting net? that may work but u mite need help dragging him in and it takes practice to get good at throwing one of those things
 
get some bluegill or something and rig it up on a line...probably some nylon rope or something with a bigass hook on the end and get the snapper to go after the fish...we've done this before and caught like 5-10 lb snappers at this rock quarry its pretty fun, give it a try.
 
I can throw a cast net, but I'm afraid the turtle would rip the net apart. Its a legit idea though.
 
my town is pretty decent i meen we have about 55,000 ppl here and there r 2 highschools so there are always fights now and again gives every1 sumthing 2 do
 
Alright, another modifiction. The fucker only comes up for air in the middle of a patch of lily pads that I cant get into, other than that it stays underwater. If i could get to it I would have tried that a long time ago. I need to know how to trap the thing IN THE WATER. I'll bet $20 somebody is still gonna tell me to shoot it.
 
I know it's been suggested already but have you tried baiting it with anything? It sounds like it would be a bitch to net it when it's in the lily pads but it might be easier if you could lure it into open water somehow and then net it.

if i remember right he was getting 50 dolllars to do that and i think most of those things are free so i'm confused

I suppose it might but if he still wants to do it himself he could at least call and see what advice they might have. That being said your suggestion could yield some interesting results.
 
whatever you do take pics of it when you get it.

just make a super tastey bloody mess with some inferior animal in a shallow section, then trap it.
 
You can buy the biggest treble hook you can find and snag it, and have some sort of blunt weapon to whack its ass with.
 
Exactly, get a kayak, and go to the lilli pads and when it comes up, just go all out on it, make sure you take some steriods so you get super pissed at the turtle and fucking rape it
 
alright, look up on the internet what it likes to eat. and start feedin it for a week or so. Start by puting the food close to the pond and keep movin it away slowly. Once it start to come up onto the land and it is away from the water a bit so you cant lose it by having it go back into the water, get a shovel and go from behind it and pick it up. Then put it in a bucket and drive it to a marshy area farely far away from your house.
 
my brother and his friends found one. they put it in a paper bag, this girl fed the turtle diet pills, and then they dropped the paper bag with snapping turtle inside on this kid's porch that the girl talked to on myspace. yea, great story/
 
Lets see if people actually read the thread. I need to catch a turtle that doenst come where I can reach it or leave the pond. It is not possible to go after it personally due to the fact that it spends its time in lily pads. I do not have a boat. I cannot shoot it because the pond has a liner in it and my dad wont let me go near it with anything that shoots a projectile. I basically need to trap it, and to add some interest, lest say I want the thing ALIVE.
 
Lifting the turtle with the hands is a bit trickier. Some snappers can stretch their necks halfway back across the carapace. Manual lifting is best done by sliding fingers behind the turtle's hind legs with the tail between the hands, and gripping the turtle between the fingers and thumbs. The handler then proceeds to lift the turtle only just off the ground. The turtle will probably squirm and try to dislodge the handler's hands with its hind legs. Snappers are often slimy and wet, and they are good at causing handlers to lose their grip, so it is best to have the turtle already almost on the ground. The turtle may be covered with a smelly slime and may also defecate or urinate on a handler, who can usually expect his hands to be smelly after carrying a turtle.
