so there are four ways to do tricks

regular: going off forwards and spinning naturally

unnatural: going off forwards and spinning unnatural.

switch: going off backwards and spinning naturally

darkside: going off backwards and spinning unnaturally

agree or disagree? state your case here.

i disagree on the darkside one..i'm pretty sure if you refer to the summer windells articles on freeze its caled a dirty spin.

I thought the skis made you good. I got the skis and it turned out I was wrong. It must be the clothes.

i agree, if you could throw all of your tricks in all those 4 ways.....mad props.

i had an idea the other day that skiers could do nose and tail manuals, on and off of rails or maybe even small jumps. i saw some snowboarder do nose manual up the jump and then throw a misty 7. it was sick. if skiing becomes more technical i think that'll be where it'll go

I agree with most of K2s, but what about backside and backside unnatty...for instance, a regular rodeo (not switch) could be done 4 ways:

1. Regular

2. Unnatural

3. Backside Reg (regular motion, but spin opposite)

4. Backside Unnatural (unnatural motion, but spin opposite)

I have just started wondering about this if anyone has anything to addd...the only thing I don't know is if it is truely called 'backside'? and if not, what is the correct term?

the next wordwar what comes here, is that we should start getting riders their regular and goofy ratings. someone who's popular with lots of switch takeoffs will be called goofyfooted and someone who's taking them off normal way will be called regular..

the word darkside is sick, and it sounds much better than switch unnatural.. Call it what you want, but don't use backside or frontside. No me gusta. Hell you can use the word 'Cab' just stick to using that term for pipe riding.

What's the biggest darkside spin you guy's have seen/ read? anyone seen a darkside 720?

im sure cab is when you come up to a rail backwards and spin e.g. cab 270/450 ....

and thats the only way the term is used...

thats the word on the street anyways.......

ok darkside sounds like a damn line term.

there can be no distinction between frontside and backside on skis, we all face the same straight direction going down the hill, so we are either spinning left or right. either way is the exact same as the other way, just a different direction. on a snowboard, since you face either left or right, depending on the way you spin (on a 180 for example) your 'front side' of you will face the landing, or if you spin the other way your 'back side' will be facing the landing.

in terms of rails (snowboarding), if you come in, say left foot forward, and the rail is to the left side of you and you do a boardslide facing down the rail, then it is a 'backside boardslide' because you approached the rail with it on your 'back side' this comes from skateboarding and can be very confusing.

for skiers, we mostly hit rails straight on, but say you come from the left side of a rail and ollie up and slide it right foot forward, then you are doing a lip slide because you have to get your tails up over the rail in order to slide it. so either sliding a rail normal or lipsliding it are the only two distinctions (aside from regular and unnaural)

and as for spinning off a jump, you can spin your 'normal' way, which is usually determined (but not always) by which foot is dominant, but based on which way is most 'natural' for you to spin. the other direction would then obviously be your 'unnatural' way of spinning. this applies exactly the same for taking off switch.

the word dirty came into play when tanner and boyd and a few of us just started saying it because (boyd mostly) we thought it was a funnier and better way of saying the word 'unnatural' of course the boys at freeskier are going to try to pick up on the lingo of the influental riders and use it in their mag, it's one of the ways our sport progresses, of course we just hope they will use the terms the right way, which isn't the case all the time for everything.

blah, enough of my rambling... call it what you want, we all pretty much get the picture, although i think the word fakie just sounds kinda gay in my opinion

yeah there is no front/backside and no fakie on skis. those terms apply strictly to boardsports. and from now on i am using the term darkside.

 
true, no backside/frontside. And Darkside isnt like the toxic/tail debate, because darkside actually serves a purpose of shortening 2 long ugly words int oa cool sounding one.

'Fakie unatural' sounds so bad.

'Darkside' sounds so badass!

at camp some people were talking about nollies or somthing like they do like a nose press then liek pop of the jump like a nollie on a sakte board kinda

do we really need another name for tricks?

and why does everyone not want names to be where they came from?

 
yeah i really was trying to be sarcastic when speaking about goofys and regulars..

and in skiing cant be frontsides and backsides, for reasons that derek listed..

derek also told some other good info.

and its same to me how people are talking about darksides or dirtys or sw uns, call it as you want but still they are mad tricks to do.
