Okay, I know the article is about skateboarding but if you think of action sports as a big family, we're all concerned by what corporation can do to our sport although I believe skiing is more preserved from huge corporations than skateboarding since the skateboarding community is amazingly huge, but at a smaller scale and with less money behind it, it's pretty similar. Well, Nike began to conquer. And that leads me to be grateful to see that freeskiing can still live with more local brands like ONEP, Faction, Surface and you name them...

Just a thought to keep in mind.

Meh, skiing is no where big enough for any corporations to care about us like they do skateboarding, hell snowboarding isnt even close to touching skating.

Underground skaters will always exist tho, its not like skateboarding will only exist on a contest level. I see this point of this article but I think the writer is over exaggerating.

nike, target, paul mitchell, pop tarts, energy drink companies, to name a few. also, it's companies that had nothing to do with the freestyle aspect of skiing until now that they see there's money to be made, such as nordica and the north face vs. companies that have been only freestyle since the start such as armada, line, saga.

sure, they dont care about skiing as much as skateboarding/snowboarding, but it's still the fact that companies (that didnt care about freestyle skiing before) can pump a bunch of money into it now and hurt the sales of actually core companies that care about freestyle skiing.

I was just giving you a hard time.

I realize that its a potential problem for any sport to be taken over by huge non core companies trying to make a profit, but its these same companies that help freeskiing grow.

I don't think we are ever going to loose our core brands, just has skating hasn't. Companies like the north face, mtn dew, & red bull sponsor events that allow athletes to showcase their talent.

Without big spenders, skiing comps would be nowhere near the level they are today.

skateboarding has a LOT more people in it to still support the core brands. skiing hasnt lost many core brands YET (siver cartel, klint, coreupt), but how many kids this year do you think are gonna buy nordicas(race company) now instead of the on3ps or armadas they used to like? probably quite a few.

Do you guys think that companies that don't produce their own skis are "core"? Is being "core" simply having an ultra cool rider image to help carry the brand (ie. Klint or Coreupt)? Because honestly, more than 80% of the brands that most kids on NS think are "core" are about as far from core as possible. They're just out to make money like any other business.

Skiing is full of huge corporations. Redbull, Monster, Target, Jarden, Amer Sports etc. I feel like the number of companies that are owned by larger corporations out number those who aren't.

Nordica and north face were involved with freestyle long before the so called core companies even existed. Just because you are only just noticing what they are doing again does not mean they have not been there all along.

Indies? I guess, if your definition of indy is having a couple guys managing a company under the watchful eye of deep pocketed investors and sinking all your money into a team without doing proper product R+D.... then wondering why it didn't work out.

fuck ski manufacturing corporations

the 'lifestyle property management' corporations, the kind the buy up ski areas...those are the devil. they are not interested in a skiing middle class. at all.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCALLY OWNED SKI CO.

MAKE AND BUY IN THE US

moment & on3p are definitely my favorite companies that are independent, made in the us, and support the ski scene by giving back to riders.

It's actually hilarious how people think "Corporation" is such a scary word. You know what a "corporation" is? It's a binder full of paper.

The degree to which people are, well, stupid, is evident in the sheer volume of companies doing everything possible to avoid being referred to as a "corporation" because calling yourself a "collective" or some bullshit like that sounds oh-so-much-more grassroots. I mean I realize it's a nitpicky point but you guys all sound ridiculous.

By the way I'd bet most if not all small ski companies are incorporated.

If anything, skiing has already been run by "corporations" since the end of WWII. Why do you think everyone sees skiing as posh, expensive, "the whitest thing possible"? Because thats what companies like Bogner, White Stag, etc wanted it too be. This image unfortunately overstayed it's welcome into today, where it still persists.

The challenge is to keep skiing moving in the right direction like it has been since the late 90's. The freestyle movement in the 70's failed at this, over the course of the decade they went from this:

It is also the national sport of Canada....

That aside, with larger companies entering into the ski world, more and more money will be put into our sport providing the world with a larger insight into skiing. Larger economies of scale will also take place, making ski gear cheaper, and hopefully bring more people into our community. Ever since lacrosse has started to take off it has become the fastest growing sport in the US

I for one do not want freestyle skiing to turn into a mainstream sport, but with corporations getting into the industry (like skateboarding and snowboarding), skiing will either become mainstream, or die out with the hardcore skiers sticking at it.

That's just my 2¢

True. Tnf actually used to be way more core than it is now. Now its a fashion brand, in the 90s it was more of a true mountaineering company.

Yea definitely!

That's why so many of the top athletes in the world take TNF gear to the top of Everest and shit!
