How are dudes like Ecook and Eppern surviving?

I've spent the last few days watching through some of their projects/edits. I absolutely love the content they put out. Seems like they are able to travel around the world and ski/film for a living, but I don't understand how it's financially feasible. How are they able to sustain a livable income from what they do? It's already hard enough for well known skiers with big sponsors.

They probably work off season?

idk who those guys are but in my extensive experience, the most common ways people do this kind of stuff is either 1) have rich families or 2) work their ass off in the off-season to save for the year. who knows, maybe both!

I bet armada is definitely helping out for sure. Its one more homie for them to pay and hes gonna film certified heat for the team. If they can sell the same amount of skis paying one dude to film vs making a longer project with multiple filmers makes wayy more sense in my mind.

Funds of the trust genus

Tends to be the case…. Secret sauce of most dirtbag skiers…. Yes they may work a ton in the summer/fall to help fund their winters & trips and sleds etc. BUT generally if you have a safety net to fall back on it frees you up to spend every cent you make on skiing. Also… most top pros went to academies and their families subsidize if not completely fund their year round training, travel, and comp/film seasons.

Also worth considering that if you have the time & resources to train and ski hard enough in the first 21 years of your life to break into that top level then you probably were not spending as much time at work and school as regular people.

obviously there are exceptions to the rule, and yes sponsorships and academy scholarships can make a big difference but I think you still need a lot of family support to get to a point where those opportunities come your way.

not trying to knock anybody who may have been lucky enough to live this lifestyle, just think it’s important to remember especially if you are comparing yourself to those people.

kind of cheapens the whole redneck/gangster/partyboi skier image if you ask me though….

I'm not gonna pocket watch or comment on any particular person's situation. Pretty safe to say that most skiers (myself included) are from middle class families at least. There can be a lot of factors at play. Lots of people work their ass off in the summer so they can work less in the winter. Some people have the connections where they can visit others on their trips and save money that way. Some people are getting paid or getting their trips at least partially funded, but I honestly have no idea how much money companies are actually giving out to skiers/filmers. And yeah, parents' money is definitely playing a big role for some people, but I wouldn't know who.

could be any of these: mom & pop, remote job, work all summer/fall and ski the rest of the year, live poor as fuck but film cool shit, etc.

Should also add I have no idea who Ecook & Eperrin but sounds like they’re doing rad shit!

post some links or embeds if you get a minute !

I do not get why people even try to make it in the ski industry, nothing going for ya. HOWEVER, I'm glad they do it lol

I got you. This edit is simple but saucy. Legal dancing is more of a ski movie, and has such a sick aesthetic.

Although Eppern puts out more and IMO higher quality stuff, I really like what Ecook puts out as well. His Kimbo Sessions edit went hard. Much better than the three-part-shit-show the official kimbo sessions yt channel put out...

I guess so. That's why companies like armada are so valuable to small/niece sports. You need companies who are willing to fund not only the commercial giants like Birk Ruud and A Hall, but also the small fish who put out dope stuff for the "core".

Don’t know if there’s a lot of overlap in the cultures but Stab Magazine has a really sick series called How Surfers Get Paid. It’s definitely worth signing up for a free trial of their premium service to watch season one and the first couple episodes in season 2.

I’d assume pro skiers are paid somewhat similarly to pro surfers and the evolution of athlete compensation probably follows the same bell curve. There’s definitely some comparisons to be made, although, I think skiers have always been paid quite a bit less than surfers.

Cannot recommend How Surfers Get Paid enough. Best content I’ve seen in action sports, maybe ever. NS should produce How Skiers Get Paid.

Little late to the ball here but given these guys experience and skill set, I think it’s fair to speculate off season work. Videography and photography can be pretty lucrative, especially if you have the personality to produce connections and network. Cam Willis for example, shoots crazy ads for old navy, Lexus, Kate spade etc. now obviously I have no clue if ecook and eppern are doing the same, but if you take jobs like this, they can make a large chunk of the funding for films with the homies.
