What I meant by that was that skiing as a whole lacks creativity. Go to any popular resort and see every kid doing the same trick, on the same features, wearing the same clothes, using the same slang; all I'm saying is that people should take a step back and create something of their own.
 
Maybe YOU should appreciate skiing more, it is an art, not just an art but a sport whatever you want to call it. I was just making the point that if people are expressing different styles you shouldn't shun it.

maybe its fun to do the same stuff as your buddies!! be the change you want to see in the (skiing) world, and do something super creative and gnarly if you want. nothing against that dude. honestly if you tell people to do something cool it won't happen nearly as effectively as you doing it yourself and making an edit and showing people what you mean.

Yeah but if that happened, then every kid would just copy that until one other person finally gets around to inventing something. When Jon Olsson threw the first Kangaroo flip, did you see a bunch of kids inventing new tricks? No! You saw a bunch of kids throwing Kangaroo flips!

It would be more effective if people just had a more existential mindset about variety and expression.

 
I love skiing as much as everyone else on this forum but that doesn't make skiing an art. An art needs to have no other purpose but itself. Skiing is not an art.

Fucking sick of every second guy going "skiings art klol!"

LOL at this ski edit being art. Anthony does some really good shit as far as art goes... but this is not art.. this is a thrown together mush of decent skiing. Its fun to watch tho so it has that.

yeah they look super fun to do, that's why kids started doing kangaroo flips. I also saw double corks starting to be thrown down, new flips invented by Jon himself. And you gotta realize (i'm sure you already have), everybody throws their tricks differently than the next guy. Jon's flat 5 is completely different than Andy Mahres, which is completely different than Tom's, which is different than Turpin's, which is different than yours, which is different than mine, the style and way you throw it comes naturally to you and that is a result of all your influences. Your influences are whatever you want them to be. One of my good buddy is super into surfing, so everything he does relates to surfing whether it be on a skateboard, or even his skiing you can see those similar smooth body movements he uses when he surfs. I'm influenced by stuff I see thrown down that I like, from different guys.

I agree with your last statement, but where are you gonna find young kids besides select few following that? Maybe if guys like you threw up some edits, kids would be exposed to different styles rather than just 4bi9 and IHNY and other kids throwin out edits left and right. Kids will have different styles to choose from and then be influenced by different stuff and we can create a whole band of new kids finding different ways they like to express themselves.

My roomate was telling me how back in the old days (1997ish) before ski movies were out, everybody was just inventing their own stuff or at least thought they had invented it because they hadn't seen people do it before. He said he did what is now called an underflip and thought he invented it because he hadn't seen anybody else do it before. That is the only time I think one can truly have their distinct, own style: when you haven't seen anybody else do it. However with ski movies and edits you are exposed to others and see what you like other people do, and therefore are influenced by them. What you are saying, is to be influenced by only yourself and I dont think that will be able to happen with so much exposure to other influence. You might be able to do it but others can't do it so easily.

I'm not saying that at all. I try to find new and creative things to do all the time, yet I am highly influenced by skiers like Pep, Pollard, and Jon.

All I'm saying is that instead of copying your favorite skier's tricks, you should use their influence to create something of your own. Not just say "just throw shit, don't be soooo artsy, bro" like a condescending prick. This isn't directed at you by the way, but at the general hate towards skiers who dress differently, or do obscure tricks.

And I guess if skiing isn't an art, then neither is anything else that involves individual expression.

Well, to be technical, skiing outside of the competition scene does not truely fit the definition of sport.

So if

Skiing != sport != art

than

skiing = art
 
That's the same logic as saying:

Pineapples != Vegatables != Meat

See how flawed your logic was? Besides.. now we're just being pedantic. You think it's art, I disagree. Let's leave it at that.
 
I'd like to see your logic on how skiing is not an art? Not arguing; I really would sincerely like to see where someone is coming from when they say skiing is not an art.

In my opinion, it is just as much a form of expression as music.
 
Hey man, when i poke fun at you being artsy and saying artsy stuff on this site, its one of those why so serious? moments. it's a website. but i wasnt trying to argue with you, just saying that its kinda hard to get kids to be completely and purely individual. What I was saying is that maybe your creativeness can influence other kids and you could make a whole new generation of artistically expressive skiers. Maybe make your edit and try something on a feature then say to the camera something like "what can YOU see being done on this tree stump?" or something like that to make kids think about all the possibilities one can do on one little feature. That would be revolutionary and if you did somethin like that (not saying exactly as I said, but to encourage kids to make up their own stuff) it would be ill as FUCK.
 
Fair enough, for me art is something which has no other purpose but itself. So I guess you could argue that someone throwing down a cork 9 is art but I just don't see it.

I just think it's a bit pretentious when people think skiing is an art, filming it is an art, taking pictures of it is an art but the actual practise of skiing.. I don't see it. You're not really expressing yourself by grinding a rail are you? What the hell for expression is that?
 
Well if you have that attitude and don't try to create some sort of diversity or style of your own, then you're going to be stuck looking like every other person, in which case, no, skiing is not an art.

 
I feel that the actual skiing portion is actually more artistic than snapping a photo. There is certainly a creative element required in freeskiing. Again, I relate it to music, which is undoubtedly a form of art. Musicians making music is art, more so than the act of recording.

I say tomato, you say tomato. That's how I see it though. I respect your view as well as I can see where you are coming from as well.

And you're right, I could go out and try to inspire kids to be a little more individual. With all the innovative shit that's been going down in the past years, I'm honestly suprised it hasn't been happening already.

This inspiration you want is more of a think as I think, don't do as I do, kinda thing aka try to do something you haven't seen before. that's what kids should be thinking.

Erm... I don't actively try to "differ" myself from everyone else by creating my own "style". I ski because it's fun and I love it, not because I want to distinguish myself. I don't care about the dresscode, the gangsta fad, the afterbangs etc. I've not bought any new clothing gear in a good 3 years as it still works fine.

I don't feel a need to not look like every other person. I think that perhaps you're a little too obsessed of what people's opinion is of you. Naturally everyone cares a little, even me, but on the slopes all I care about is having the most fun possible on that particular day. And not if I have my own style.
 
Skiing has a style, there is ways to do it but everyone does it differently. Its individual.

Sounds kinda like an art to me, like how dance is an art-form. but can also be competitive.
