Wasnt sure what category to put this in so i hoe this is the right one.....So i wanna go to whistler for WSI but cant find a cheap hotel and the hostel is only 28 a night i think. So i am for sure willing to pay that but i am wondering if anyone has stayed there and if so, can you walk to the hill. Any input would be rad. thanks

yeah there's a bus that runs through whistler but i dont know about the exact routes, there's that hostel, then the fireside lodge and the shoestring lodge which are hostels too closer to the village

From what I remember that one is a bit away from everything but I think there is a bus that does go past it (not sure how regularly though). I stayed at Fireside, was $30 (couple of years ago now) and that was ok as long as you could put up with the members...trying at times! And then there is always Arts (next to fireside) prob cheapest accom going around but you get what you pay for!

- cheapest ive found. $21 a night, pimp as shit, its private so dont get rowdy or the members will kick you out, save it for the bar, 8 minute bus ride to village
southside lodge 604-932-4545
- cheap only if you stay for a week, located in creekside, 5 minutes for main village
ubc lodge 604-822-5851
- dont know too much, costs a little more than fireside, wont be as luxurious, same distance as fireside
hosteling int'l 604-932-5492
- far away, more expensive,
arts hostel 604-932-4660
- shit hole, 8 minutes from village, can negotiate price cause its always open
southside lodge 604-932-3644
- shit hole, same price as fireside, has ugly strippers, rooms arent actually thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat bad, but kitchen makes you want to slit your wrists, the place is legendary so it would be your last chance to say you stayed there, can be a drunken fool and destroy the place and no one would notice.

^ good summary. Your right about Fireside, only problem is can't be rowdy....at all. Some guys got kicked out when I was there coz they came back late and couldn't get in so woke some members up. Some of the members are a little weird (eg the old ones with wacko accents) but yeah on the flipside it is pretty nice for the price, clean and warm. Does Randy still look after the place?

yeah i stayed in southside lodge for a week and it wasnt THAT bad, and it was pretty cheap and the guy the runs it, dunno if hes still there, is super chill.

yeah, the shoestring lodge?.. it's pretty sick. there's a bar right outside the door and last time i was there they had some shows. it's like a 5 minute walk to the bus stops, and an easy walk to the mountain if you're not lazy, but definately worth it if you're on a low budget.

the UBC is awesome and you can make your own spaghetti every night and hang out with lots of international wierdos. they have a dog there too.

some good recommendations on this thread, so thanks for sharing. Golden rules if staying in hostels or cheapo accomodation:
bring your own toilet paper;
check for smoke detectors in your room and figure out escape route (ignore the dumb assembly point instructions on the back of the door - never follow the crowd in a fire);
eat a burger holes, its more hygenic then using shared kitchens;
leave valuables like camcorders in lockers at resort, bus station wherever, they usually have 24 hr cctv, much more secure than at the cheap lodging house.
All these tips are relevant generally but relevance increases by a factor of 10 at French resorts.
