Horrible argument topic

So im taking this stupid argument analysis course and I have to give a big speech on how media effects body image. I am for the status qou. So basically I need to argue that the media does has does not have a negative effect on body image, or maybe something like it is not fair to blame the media. Just wanna get some opinions on how i can form an argument here.
I also need 20 sources, so if anyone has anything good that would be nice.

I've only ever done arguments on the negative side of advertising.

I guess you can say it works though. The image people see, they want it. So they buy and buy and buy, with hopes of achieving that image. This money goes into the company, which can get outsourced to other countries for things like materials and cheap labour. Which in turn, lets people survive since they have a job to support themselves and their families.
 
wow that's too bad you have to argue that side... so easy to argue against you haha.

I would try for something like...

"people are smart enough to realize that the way some media portrays a person is unrealistic"

"there is plenty of media that inspires confidence in people's perception of their body image" (good luck finding evidence for this but if you can its something)

ya 9-14 page paper with a 20 minute presentation. The whole class is basically prep for that though. And it has to be more related to the people and there body image. For example one of my points is that it inspires people to be healthy.
 
i really hope you got assigned that side and didn't choose it because its pretty god damned difficult to argue that the media does not affect people's body image
 
ah, well that can work.

Just don't get into/avoid the whole negative psychological impact it has on people.

Although it does inspire people to be concerned of their image.

Fuck, I keep wanting to just keep writing negative effects....
 
these might sound like dumb ideas...but it could help as far as sources and content go... the first two things that came into my mind as the media portraying images to inspire healthier lifestyles are The Truth About Tabacco and Dove products. youtube the truth about tabacco commercials if you don't know what i'm talking about. they show the horrible conditions of nicotine addictions. google the dove campaign for real beauty. girly topic i know, but it's a company trying to inspire women that they are beautiful without airbrushing/editing/etc. hope this helps or at least gets you pointed in the right direction.
 
Anorexia, bulimia, depression and other chemical reactions that force us to see each other in a different light.

Of course, media portrayals are affecting us more and more, but try searching for Medical Journal databases for articles and research that study the neural links to skewed body image from a neutral point of view.
 
If you're running out of ideas you could fall back on the "people aren't stupid enough to be influenced by media" argument, although it's weak as fuck, dumb bitches are 100% influenced
 
personal responsibility, advertising reflects real life, companies give us what we want/respond to (with our money).. those are some arguments you hear a lot
