Homemade Longboard.. Whadda you think?

So I was planning on buying a Loaded Dervish with some of the cash I made this summer but I was looking around Silverfishlongboarding.com and started reading up on how to make your own boards.. so I headed to the garage and made a press and got a hold of some 1/8in Baltic Birch and went to town. It ended up being a 42in board with 2in of camber and about 3/8in of concave. I still need to drill out the holes for the drop thru and put another layer of fiberglass on the top cuz shes still a little bit soft but other that that Im almost road ready... now for picture time
Heres the press I made, its actually upside down for how the board will end up sitting

This is the inside of the press.. the piled up birch gave me 3/8in of concave which feels pretty damn comfy

Heres the blank board before I chopped it up and sanded 'er down

I ll post up more pics when its all bolted together and ready to shred

wow thats awesome. ive wanted to make my own board for a while now. did you read a tutorial to figure out how to make the press? if so, +K for the link.

cant wait to see how that turns out actually

holy shit before i clicked on the thread i thought it was going to be some shitty ass p.o.s but its acually extremely good. nice job man!

I have a buddy who makes longboards at his surf shop, and yours look twice as nice. Props man, tell me how it rides once its finished.

Its got 3 plys of the 1/8in birch with 6oz glass... I was planning on using 4oz but my marine supply shop only had 6... Im thinking about vac-molding some and experimenting with carbon fiber but that stuff gets really expensive in a hurry so we ll see what happens

wow thats legit , when i read the title of the thread i thought oh fuck some kid but trucks on a 2x4 but that looks sick!

damn, how much does the wood cost for the board?

Tell us how it rides and hook us up with some. And make youself some cash while your at it.

Yeah Im really thinking about selling em... my uncle owns a sign company so I can get him to print me up vinyl die cuts and even some professional graphics to lay down but otherwise Im not too bad with paint and all that nonsense (/claim) the only thing is that Im at school now and doing epoxying and sanding in a dorm room might be frowned upon, but my buddy has a house so we ll see what happens

a lot of kids i knew made long boards at my school, and from what i remember they rode awesome and this looks no different! sick job!

I have built my own longboard before and i found out that it was not worth it. First up if you want to buy all the parts individually ie. trucks wheels.. the cost ends up coming close to a professionally made board. Then you end up spending at least 5 hours shaping, sanding, carving, painting and all that other good stuff.

^ oh yea and when you make it every little detail matters, shape and what its made out of. Just like a pair of skis. If you want the highest quality you need to buy one.

But the feeling of riding your own board is legit.. and making it myself lets me choose the shape and what its made of... and im sorta picky about small details anyways so making my own lets me perfect it myself. Im more than down to put in the work to make exactly what I want

nah dude you just need practice. After you have figured it out you can make anything better yourself than a manufactured board. just look at kracked skulls.

I dont see how kracked skulls could be a good example. All boards are manufactured and made by hand. From my experience I have rode a ton of different boards(its becoming very popular in my town so just about every one of my friends have one). About 6 of my friends have made their own boards some of them are better than others but none have yet come close to a board i can buy.But by no means did i say that you wont eventually through blood sweat and tears finally come up with the right board that is better than everything.

Dude Kracked Skulls are terrible quality, my friend has one, it's total shit. By contrast, my other friends own Raynes, Loadeds, and Bustins, and they're all much better quality. I don't personally love Bustin but they make quality shit.

I've had my Derv for almost two years and have ridden it super hard, and it is still in great shape. My friend has had his Fish for even longer and he still rides it almost everywhere.

^^ yeah ive got a bustin spliff and i like it for crusing to class but ive spotted some mistakes and stuff in it and thats sorta why i wanted to make my own so I could take my time and make it just how I want it

yeah thats cool and all, but this kid is a snowboarder.
do you think you could make me one and get it signed by shawn white???
Lick my gnuts chad

Derb i ll kill your ass.. so anyways the board is sorta done, its not dropped thru yet but its def ridable. The next round is gonna have another ply in it cuz its really really soft, I'm 150 pounds and i can easily flex it to the ground. Its got a real surfy feel to it which is kinda fun but would be hell on any decent hill... I ll be tossing another one in the press this weekend hopefully and i ll get pics of the prototype up as soon as i steal my buddys camera.
