Homemade Climbing Skins?

I really wanna try out climbing skins this winter but don't want to drop $150 for a legit pair. Does anybody know if there's a way to make these yourself with somewhat common materials? I've heard of people using seal skins but idk how i'll get seal skins in Michigan...

buy $15 army surplus ones, they won't fit modern skis very well but I'm sure they will work better then homemade ones.

i used to have some seal skin skins, but they were from the 1930's or something. anything that would have a very fine grain would work, like horse hair.
