Home Security

So, I'm not gonna put details in here, but a dude tried to rob my house today. I talked to the officer, and he said some of the guys that were robbing houses in the area were using guns.

That said, I think I will buy a shotgun. I'm from Wyoming, and own many, many firearms. I know how to use them effectively and safely. I'm thinking a Mossberg 500, as it has a stock, a short barrel, and has PLENTY of stopping power. I am also thinking about taking a personal defense course, as it is something that I think would be worthwhile. To be honest, my house is shit. The front door could probably be pulled out of the wall, and that is only the beginning. My biggest worry is that if I did have a shotgun, it could get stolen. A shotgun in the wrong hands is a lot worse for law enforcement and citizens then a burglar with a pistol. I have no qualms about blasting some asshole that breaks into my house.

I want to hear what you think about this, and what you would do in my situation.

id get one of these.

Haha, I do hunt, not a lot, but the shotguns I have at home are far too long to use in a house...that bed thing looks perfectttttt

I'm sure this sounds asinine to you, but I think that I should have the right to defend my home and property. I don't want some guy off the street to break into my house and steal things that I worked hard to earn. I'm not ignorant, and I would like to think I make good decisions. I'm obviously not going to pull a gun on five or six armed men in my house, but if the situation called for it......the 500 I'm getting had eight rounds....

im not sure a gun is really gonna solve your problem. if you are keeping it properly, its gonna take you a WHILE to get it out and loaded, at which point your probably fucked. get a dog. way better deterrent.

im serious about the dog. something like a german shepherd. put a sign out front that says beware of dog. robbers hear that thing barking and they will peace the fuck out fast. you dont wanna fuck with dogs.

Dogs are definitely a great deterrent, and I will get one when I have more space and time on my hands. I just would feel bad for the dog, since we have a small ass yard and I couldn't spend a lot of time with it.

thats good then. the main advantage i see to the dog is, you never even have to pull a gun, because very few people will be stupid enough to break in in the first place.

i understand wanting a gun to protect your home, but i agree with nomen that i think your underestimating the problems it could cause.
