Home Brewing

So I just started my first homebrew, a pale ale, and I was wondering if anyone on NS brews there own beer? I know the 420 cult is pretty active and there is a craftbrew cult but it is very small and pretty dead.

SOOOOOO if you are interested in craft beer or home brewing you should join the "craft brews" cult and talk about beer!

Its not that hard to learn. Google "home brewing supllies" and find a local home brew store. A started kit can be as little as $80 and you make 5 gallons of beer! Its as simple as following a cooking recipe.

i was gonna make my own brew last summer, but didnt have the funds.

this summer im gonna make somma dave's pale ale, name after myself.

ive read about it, and know the supplies to get, just need the funds

I dunno about that, let me know when you take your first sip haha. Not that I know from first hand experience, but I've had quite a few friends have bad batches until they got the hang of it. My friend Kevin let me taste his first batch and it was god awful, not even drinkable. Second batch at least had some dece flavor, and now he makes some ok beer.

a few of my friends fermented apple juice in a carboy this past summer. they made 3 different batches of it and it got progressively better every time. pretty potent stuff as well.

I finally tasted the beer that I brewed on OCT 1st. As i suspected it was not that great. Dont get me wrong it def tasted like beer but it was extremely bland. I assumed this would be the case because I made it with a kit that i bought at Plymouth plantation.

Since buying the kit I have frequented the home brewing store in Cambridge Ma, searched the internet, and learned a lot of new information about brewing.

I currently have a cranberry wheat beer fermenting that i will be bottling on Thursday(after bottling you still have to wait ~12 days for carbonation) I also brewed an all citra IPA tonight that i think will be delicious. I took a bunch of pictures while i was brewing it and plan on putting together a "how to" in 2 weeks when it come time to bottle it.

The worst thing about brewing is the wait. I have brewed 3 different beers this month and have only tasted one, hell i have only bottled one. But while you wait you can always look up recipes for new beers to make!

My grampa makes his own beer and wine and its damn good. He's been doing it forever though. I definitely wanna learn how to brew one day.

first batch was an ale. really easy to put down, not too much flavor- definitely good though. after a night of "tasting," ordered a shit ton more kits. second patch was a porter. finished three days ago. it's one of the best beers I've had. love brewing.

did you use artificial flavoring or real fruit for your cran & citra? I've brewed a few flavored ales and real fruit is the way to go. It takes a fuck ton of fruit to really get a good solid flavor implanted, but it's sooooo much better than the flavoring that they sell at brew stores.

My buddy and I made a still last year. We have made moonshine, whiskey and rum, but we have never brewed beer. The best batch we ever had was definitely this apple cinnamon moonshine recipe we made. It takes a while before you get a good batch though, its just kinda trial and error.

if you're willing to wait longer you can do it without the "packet of magic." just add some yeast and it will react with the sugars already found in the juice.

i brew around a batch a month. really fun hobby. right now ive got a red ale in the keg and a milk porter in the primary ferm. and its not smelly while its fermenting, only smelly the 3-4 hours it takes to brew it.

for the cranberry i used real cranberries, some during the boil and thene even more in the secondary. the citra is an ipa made with all citra hops. i just brewed that last night and it smelt really good.

that's dope dude. you'll have to let me know how the cranberry turns out. how many gallons are you brewing? 5? how many lbs of cranberries did you use?

i wish i could do 5 gallons however i live in a small 1 bedroom apt with a gf and a dog in the middle of boston. not enough room for everything. ive been making 1 gallon batches every week, so i am always brewing or transfering or bottling. for the cranberry wheat it called for .75 lbs at 30 mins and then 1lbs in the secondary for a week. when scaleing it down i used about a half pound total for 1 gallon. i wanted some cranberry taste but not be too overpowering. i will be bottling it on thursday.

woah - one gallon batches? that's a lot of brewing!! the nice thing is that if you fuck up on a batch, you aren't out $50+ worth of hops, yeast, etc. But man, my 5 gallon setup is by no means big - you should easily be able to brew 5 gallons in a small 1 bedroom apartment. Although I suppose it would be harder to store 5 gallons worth once bottled up.

Definitely let me know how it turns out. My girl would love a cranberry beer, so I've been debating on brewing a batch. And thanks for the info, too, btw.
