Holy shit, what would you do?

(First off sorry if this is layed out oddly and hard to read, I copied and pasted it out of an email I sent and didn't feel like retyping it.)

On my way to work this morning I stop for gas and my card declines at the pump. WTF I've got money in there, what the hell's going on? So I still have enough gas to get to work and as soon as I get there I go online and check my account. I have THREE FUCKING DOLLARS!!! I see all these charges that occured yesterday and completely wiped out my entire account balance. I call the bank right then and report it. I mean all kinds of charges $350 to safeway, $290 to the auto part store, $275 to Best Buy and the list goes on.

I'm freaking out because it's the end of the month, I've got bills to pay! So the bank is investigating and I filed a police report but the both say that there's little they can do since it's not a lot of money (to them) and all that will happen is I'll get my money reimbursed from Wells Fargo. Yeah that's wonderful I'm glad to have that fraud protection but what about the mother fucker who did it? He's gettin away scott free?

I don't fucking think so. I've spent the entire morning trying to put together the pieces to the puzzle, and I've got some leads.

Okay a little background. My girlfriend Jessica and I just bought a condo together and moved in a few weeks ago. New locks installed and since these are new condo's the superintendent has access to them while they're finishing minor details. He's a friend of ours. A security guard has been working nights in the parking lot since we've moved it.

Okay back on track now. I came home from work at 6pm yesterday, ate a sandwhich and left a few minutes later for class. I apparently forgot my wallet when I left. It was in my gym back on the floor in my room. No big deal, I don't need it for school. Jessica's Mom is staying with us this week. (In town from Montana for a wedding) She and Jess were gone all evening too, but I'm thinking her Mom being from Montana isn't used to locking doors, and left the back door unlocked. These fraud charges all occured between 8pm and 10pm last night and nobody was home until 11pm. Whoever did it had to enter the place, take the card, go use it, and then put it back exactly as it was. Who the fuck could it have been? My main interest right now is the security guard for several reasons Which I'll explain in a minute. Anyway He's young, maybe early 20's and has always been very friendly in an annoying kind of way. Everytime Jess or I would get home at night he'd come talk to us. EVERY TIME. I thought nothing of it, just that he was kind of annoying. He would always ask us if we would mind being what he called "resident contacts" and would write down our name, our unit number, and the time we were coming in, going out, or even taking out the fucking trash. I've talked to him quite a bit and he seemed normal but something in the back of my mind was saying shady, but I ignored it.

Well he wasn't there last night. It was some new guy. I'm wondering because he knows exactly when we would come and go on certain nights throughout the week. He must have realized that Tuesday and Thursday nights I had class and was never home before 10:30, and he must have made sure neither of our cars were there and at this point entered the condo, took the card, used it, and put it back before anyone got home. I've had a weird feeling about this guy since day one deep inside my conscience, but it was more just not really liking him being there, not that he was suspicious. I do know he just bought a new car because he showed it to me one night. Hmm...who would want to spend $290 at Pep Boys Auto? $275 to Best buy? I dunno, maybe a new deck or perhaps some speakers? I have the exact times of each transaction and will go to each store and request that I see each survalence video at the times the charges took place. Now if the stores let me have that access is still a question I have but I'm going to try.

This seems way too perfect to be a random burglary. Whover did it wanted to make sure we didn't notice right away. The fact that my debit card was all that was taken is a little strange. For example, we just got a brand new computer, both Jess's and my ipod were both on the kitchen counter, tons of CD's, DVDs, electronics, and around $2000 worth of tools I have. Oh and my golf clubs and video games. Why stop at the debit card?

If I were robbing someone I'd have thought this place was a gold mine! (not to say we're rich or anything but over the years have worked hard to buy nice things.)

Now of course this is mere speculation as my investigation will continue so I can't jump to conclusions just yet, but I soon may have a suspect as the situation develops.

I'm in the process of contacting the security company to find out as much as I can about

this guy, such as if any reports have been filed while this he's been on duty.

Am I crazy? Am I taking this way too far? I mean I'm going to get my money back either way, I just have a hard time knowing that someone did this and got away. What do I do if I discover my assumptions are correct? I mean if I look at these tapes at the store and see this kid, I'm going to lose it! I have easy access to the other condo properties he works at and would be very VERY tempted to bust open his skull. And I'd hurt him bad, I'm a pretty big guy. Unfortunatly I've got a lot to lose, but have a very short fuse.

does the new guard work often? Go talk to him, see if he's jumpy or doesn't want to talk for any reason.

It sounds more like somebody recorded your pin and your account number and hacked it that way though. If not, how would this new guard know your pin #?

There's no way anyone would know my pin. I don't have it written down anywhere. The only place I've ordered anything online is ebay with Pay pal and I'm pretty sure that's secure. The new security guard just started there last night, i'm thinking the old one wanted to steal something before he left.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. But like the above detective said, "how would he know your pin?"

Best of luck dude!

Oh and the bank said they would have needed the card to walk in to safeway and buy $300 worth of groceries. They could not have done any of this without my card.

They can run it as a credit card transaction rather than debit. At least at Safeway you can. Sometimes I'll go in there to buy something my girlfriend needs and I'll be able to use her bank card to make a purchase that way. All they ask for is a signature, don't need your pin.

Perhaps. I just want justice to be served. I've settled down a lot since this morning. I'm not nearly as mad and now just want to make sure it doesn't happen again. It's such a pain in the ass having to cancel my card and have to order new checks and stuff.

yeah.. find out where he is through your authorites at the condos, they should know where he is transferring. talk to him in a way that hints a descrete way about what had happened.. see if he avoids eye contact and starts new subjects..

you could ask to see the signatures on the receipts at the stores where purchases were made. i bet you could find a copy of something the security guard had to find and compare the hand writing.

get your satisfaction by finding him and then hell get what he deserves. don't hurt him or do anything that could get you into trouble though.

Well that's sounds good and all, unfortunatly I'm a law abiding citizen (well for the most part) and I don't take things that don't belong to me.

I'm gonna look into that too. Only thing is that anyone with a brain wouldn't sign a receipt with their own signature.

with charges like that to best buy and the auto parts store, i'd guess that someone installed a sound system or cd player of some sort in their car? just something to keep an eye out for..

Oh and there was 1 eye witness to all of this, maybe the only one who'll ever know the truth.

by the way labs don't make good watch dogs.

my cousins phone got stolen at a party once. The person that stole it started making calls. My cousin checked out all the numbers online and called them all and got their names and stuff (He pretended to be doing a survey of college students for money). He used that information to find the kid that stole it. Next he called the police and went over there.

Its a similar situation to yours. You're not crazy.

"Okay back on track now. I came home from work at 6pm yesterday, ate a sandwhich and left a few minutes later for class"

what kind of sandwich was it

Regarding your thread about money be taking off your card.

Something EXTREMELY similer happened to my dad:

1.Someone charged around $2,000 through a debit card. The charges took place in Florida we live in Michigan.

2.Most of the money was spent at a Best Buy and a few department stores, maybe a auto parts store, dont remember exactly

3.The people who did this also got away no questions asked and my dad got his money back. They did nothing to try to find him.

The Bank was convinced someone made a duplicate of the card. Which is possiable by putting somethiung on those things you swipe your card across. If it wasnt your security gaurd something similier could of happened to you.

he was also at a gas station when his card got declined

Well none of the stores were much help. The police have to have a warrent to veiw their security tapes so of course they wouldn't let me see them. The security guard is back, I talked to him as if nothing had happened and he seemed totally normal. I still am unsure, but I'm starting to think it may not have been him. I also peeked into his car when he wasn't around. Stock deck and nothing appears to be new unless he did something under the hood.

something like that happened to my family. our cleaning lady who my mom was kind of sketched out about made off with my moms credit card and also stole the gift certificates i got for christams (this was last january). i was super pissed because it was one of those visa ones that you can use anywhere and it was for $100 and i was broke at the time.

i hope you get the guy your after.

Man, i feel soo bad for you. for all you who say just get your money back dont try catch the guy, WRONG. He may have some shit on you now. Seeing as no one left the house till 11 and the charges were made 8-10, they deffinatly have to know some sort of schedule. Find the guy, put him behind bars, stop him from taking more shit

the only thing that seems pretty sketchy is the whole "resident contacts" information, reminds me of the wet bandits in home alone, right? you should find out more about that, if it's something the security company actually does as a policy, or whether its just your man doing a little research for himself.

yea man id just let it go, theres not much you can do, and its remarkably easy to make a copy of your card, when they swipe the card they could have copyed the signature of it, and when you typed in your pin they recorded that too

what i dont get is how they spent the exact amount in ur bank account. leaving you with $3?

I know on mine I can overdraw it 1-2 times before it locks me out. I have had $5 and spent $65 on something and it let me, then when i found out I had a $30 charge and $15/day charge until i got the money back in.

it seems a little odd that whoever used it also knew how much was in the account.

doesnt this strike you a little odd man?
