Holy Shit: My Stroke of Insight

Not mine exactly, but this chick's. Neurologist analyzes her own stroke in her left hemisphere, which sounds exactly like a psychadelic experience, and comes out with a new perspective on life. Watch this shit.

That website has all kinds of very profound and insightful videos on all kinds of topics, its probably going to keep me busy all week.

Sounds like an LSD experience if I ever heard one. Sucks that she had to have a stroke to realize it though.

Great post.

How does she remember all this though? If the left hemisphere is what "connects you to the external world", then how does she remember what was around her? Sure, she seems to remember everything happening within herself but the right hemisphere - according to her - simply picks bits of information from th left hemisphere. So if she wasn't connected to the outer world, the then-present, how does she remember all this?

This is deep shit.

woah. after watching this i think ive realized that salvia just kinda kills ur left brain for a lil while. i think ill pass on the stroke...

That was mind-blowing... the concept of being huge and expansive and all that was kind of confusing, but every now and then I'd get a flash of insight, then lose it again...

Pretty crazy shit. I still don't know what I feel about it. She makes it seem like you can just switch back and forth between your left and right brain hemispheres. I don't know how possible that would ever be without the use of mind inhibiting drugs.

The stroke obviously did not affect the Hippocampus region of here brain which is memory storage and spatial navigation. As a rule, regions of the brain such as the temporal and the occipital all occur on both hemishperes of the brain, thus their ability to function seperately. Since here stroke only cut off the left hemisphere, the hippocampal region on the Right hemisphere remained intact, and so did her memory.

As a response to the last part of your post, the Right brain defines self existence. The left brain defines self individualism. The Right hemisphere acknowledges your sense of life and sensory perception, and the Left hemisphere defines where the boundaries of your perception are... ie. where your hands stop, the color range, tonal range and the reasons WHY.

The experience was really interesting, but the whole section on what type of person we should be (right or left hemisphere) and world peace confused me.

bump

just saw this for the first time.

and you're right, my times on acid have been similar to what she describes.

i love those ted lectures, the one about the guy who swam across the north pole is so crazy. That website is a smorgasbord of knowledge

This TED is really sick, but you guys should check out all the other ones. There's plenty that are as good or better than this one. Excellent way to kill time!

it was on CBC a while ago....pretty crazy shit. How she had to force her self not to be in a stroke.
