HIV cured!

There’s

an estimated 33 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS, and now

doctors believe one of them may have been cured of the virus after

receiving a stem cell transplant in 2007, the medical journal Blood

reported.

Timothy Ray Brown, an HIV-positive American living in Germany, had leukemia and was undergoing chemotherapy,

when he received a transplant of stem cells from a donor carrying a

rare, inherited gene mutation that seems to make carriers virtually

immune to HIV infection.

The transplant appeared to wipe out both

diseases, giving hope to doctors, but Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of

the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who has

been studying HIV/AIDS for almost 30 years, said while this is an

interesting proof of concept, it’s absurdly impractical.

“It’s hard enough to get a good compatible

match for a transplant like this,” Fauci told FoxNews.com, “But you

also have to find compatible donor that has this genetic defect, and

this defect is only found in 1 percent of the Caucasian population and

zero percent of the black population. This is very rare.”

Fauci said while this patient is “functionally cured” this is not something you can do with every HIV-infected individual.

“This is not prime time to me at all,” he

said. “This is a very unusual situation that has little practical

application for a simple reason. This donor not only had to be a good

compatible match, but the donor had to have a genetic defect of cells

that do not express the receptor that the HIV virus needs to enter the

cell.”

Fauci also pointed to the fact that this

transplant process is not only expensive, it’s incredibly painful and

complicated, and requires the patient to start a whole new regimen of

drugs.

“This patient is trading one poison for

another. He may not have to be on antiretroviral drugs anymore, but he

has to take immunosuppressant drugs now to prevent the rejection of his

transplant cells. Again, what this is, is an interesting proof of

concept, but it’s absolutely impractical.”

Dr. Thomas Quinn, director of Johns Hopkins

Center for Global Health told FoxNews.com that he is very familiar with

the “Berlin patient” case.

“This was a new report that looked much

deeper into whether HIV could still be present or lurking in the body

in some way, not cured, and since the transplant he remains viral free

and his cells appear to be resistant to infection,” he said.

Quinn said he agrees with the researchers

on this case that it would be qualified as the first HIV cure, opening

the door to alternative means of curing HIV.

“He [Brown] has been without therapy for

three years and appears to be free of the virus,” he said. “It gives

hope to the millions of people infected with HIV that cure is a

feasible option in the future.”

Even though Brown’s procedure proved to be

successful, Quinn also warns that this was a rare case and a bone

marrow transplant is not a cure-all for other HIV patients.

“It is a near fatal procedure that he had

to have done because of the leukemia, but this procedure is very

expensive and you have to be transplanted with a donor who is shown to

be already resistant to HIV,” Quinn said. “You’re asking for a tall

order to replicate this in the future.”

Brown’s case was published in a February 2009 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

1 in 100000000 chance that this could happen. man has to take immunosuppressants for the rest of his life instead of antiviral agents. This is in no way shape or form a vaccine

I would agree with this to some extent. People need to learn the consequences of promiscuity. Africa, however, is full of people told to rape virgins to cure HIV.

I remember hearing about this two years ago, I think then they were trying to figure out if stem cells would actually do anything against the virus.
i think it also has to do with the blood type, and other genetic factors. injecting everyone with aids with stem cells won't cure all of them...

Gladly, but I'm at work and you can get fired for that sort of thing. Unless you like cum in your ice cream....then I may be able to help.

CNN is a hell of a lot better than Fox

but being from Canada I generally tend to put my trust in CBC or BBC or Globe and Mail or the Guardian

not some shitty private American news station that doesn't need to comply to barely any standards.. and it already has a horrible reputation.. and is outright right-wing

This is actually pretty big news.

They specifically chose his stem cell match so that the immuno cells would have a genetic mutation that made them far less susceptible to HIV. By wiping out his old immune system, and replacing it with an immune system that is resilient to HIV they essentially completely cured him.

It's a big deal. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

its not just stem cells, genetically mutated stem cells that occer in 1% of whites and 0% of blacks. plus its super painful and you need to go on a bunch of new drugs to prevent a rejection. not practical at all, but still interesting

Of course it isn't practical...but it is HUGE for science. It shows that HIV can actually be cured, and that there is a possibility of gene therapy enabling this for everyone in the future. It is a huge step forwards. Pretty cool.

Your point? Nuclear fusion was a tall order too...look how that changed the world. Just saying. Just cause something has a long road ahead of it doesn't mean it isn't hugely applicable to the future of science. I could go on.

yeah its kinda retarded for people to say its not a big deal. we just cured something that was thought to be incurable. who cares if it seems impracticable but so didn't the first cell phone or the first computer. its called progression you near-sighted fuck asses.

here is another way to make the disease disappear.mandatory STD/blood tests for everyone.if you have HIV/AIDS no more sex for you.done.

we can do so much with stem cells this is just the beginning. i dont see why people still think there are moral issues when even HIV can be cured

you do know you have to pay a lot of money for a lot of the advances in medicine that make people live longer, right? so even if the cure for the worst diseases were made, you'd have to either pay a lot of money or wait a very long time for it. anyways, the world has becoming overcrowded since we started using agriculture 10,000 years ago you idiot, not because of increased medical science.

hate to say it but i agree, most kids on her are way too liberal to even consider taking fox news seriously and are way too near sighted. not like any of that is bad or anything

Only rarely does Fox news come out with any worthwhile reading, so they are usually correct in assuming that a news station that reports 95% bullshit should not be taken seriously, even IF they get something right once in a while. They've proven themselves an inviable news source and are justifiably scorned.

It's not like Aidsmap was the first to report this you know.
ReferenceAllers K et al. Evidence for the cure of HIV infection by CCR5Δ32/ Δ32 stem cell transplantation.[/i]Blood, advance online publication December 8, 2010.Hutter G et al. On that note, you missed the point. Regardless of whether Fox News reported this first, they are still considered a largely disreputable news source because of the other 95% of shit they post.

Just was pointing out what you said...

By the way, there is a difference between citing references in a journal article and reporting. Haha I love when people have no idea what they are talking about. Those aren't reports, those are publications.

Everyone needs to stop being so HIV negative. This is great news for all the rich white people with aids. I doubt poor Africans would want to cure their AIDS anyways.

What the fuck is wrong with you.

This is seriously one of the most fucked up comments I've seen in weeks, and thats saying something considering what I get to view.
