Hipsters Mating Call

1. Hipsters dont listen to Animal Collective anymore... theyre far too mainstream. Any band that you know of, Hipsters no longer listen to.

2. They dont suck.

Animal Collective = folk music played through an electronic medium. Their song structures are very simple, their harmonies are interesting, and they put on a ridiculously good live show. I like them a lot, personally. Music is something that should be appreciated for what it is, not for who listens to it.

They are not at the foremost of this generation's musical identity. At all. That is just false. If anything, I wish it was more true, because this generation's musical identity is rooted in hip hop, britney spears, boy bands, etc.

I like some stuff Animal Collective does but I feel like their whole thing has moved past the actual music. This may not be the fault of the band, it could just be the fans...But regardless, I can completely identify with the original poster, most people who talk about/like them are pretentious my-music-is-more-enlightened-than-you douches. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say overall you're probably a nice guy, but statements like "They are working under the radar, influencing all of the "artists" you guys listen to. To appreciate Collective you really do have to open up your mind" sound pretty pretentious.

And don't tell me I don't get it, or I'm musically immature. I listen to much harsher noise than Animal Collective...Yellow Swans, Black Dice, Xinlisupreme, The Skaters, etc.

i can listen to about 20 seconds of one of their songs, i have no clue what people see in them

Epic, and I just listened to a couple of their songs and they don't do it for me. Very boring, I need music that will make me move or get angry or excitied. It sounds more like elevator music or something just bland. Its all personal opinion anyhow and no one can change that one way or another......

this ^

I will respect people out there trying to be creative but, so many people backing something for no obvious reason seems lame as hell.

oh really? so what is music then? because if making noises on a computer isnt considered music then i guess hip hop, r&b, and the hundreds of electronic music genres are all just what? nothing? and who the fuck are you to judge how easy/hard it is to make electro music? its just as hard and even harder then playing an instrument in most cases, you just need a different set of skills but the same creativity and inspiration is there. and why do you even care if music is made on a computer or instrument? it really doesnt matter and as long as theres a groove going and people enjoy it, thats all that matters. i dont fucking care if someone records a track of them taking a gigantic dump, as long as it sounds good im happy.

i like a few animal collective songs, my girls is great. i was going to see them live but they sold out pretty quick. their live show looks interesting because they actually play with analog hardware so its just sick as fuck.

and if you dont like the music, then it wasn't made for you

The Animal Collective is an awesome band. They are pushing an envelope that isn't too well represented in the mainstream, and its moving music forward in ways that we can't see now. Thats not to say they're the best at what they're doing, or that they are the musical identity of our generation, or that they have the best album of 2009. They are simply good musicians, doing something you don't see too often.
As for everyone ripping on electronic music, it is just as much purist music as floyd, hendrix, or whoever else you have in mind. The challenge behind electronic music is making all the sounds, tracks, melodies, harmonies, and lyrics come together, a wonderful example of which is royksopp's most recent album. It takes real musical knowledge and instrumental skill to create this stuff, which is something I doubt a lot of people in here have (no offense, that doesn't mean that you don't know music). It is music, just a different type more based on audio production than actual rehearsal, which does NOT mean it is music any less than anything else.
The musical identity of our generation? Impossible to determine, only time will tell.

I just like the music, I don't listen to it to make me feel like im better than someone else or whatever you're complaing about. So you don't like it, why does it bother you so much that other people do?

What? What other reason do you need to listen to a band other than liking the music?

Such a ridiculous thing to say.

hahahaha i just went and listened to a song (never had before) and couldnt make it through the first minute ANIMAL COLLECTIVE SUCKS

thats not music, trendsters are gay as fuck

exactly, if jimmy was still around he for sure would be making electronic music. he made his last album using one of the first versions of acid pro, he'd probably be producing crazy psychedelic trance records right now if he was still alive ahhahahhaa.

You guys really, they are the best band. Who, We Tigers? Come on who doesn't want to hear.

TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS TIGERS.

over a sick sick sick beat.

how about a transer to media/arts forum please?

As for animal collective, I like them, don't love them. Pretty unique sound, love it or hate it, b/c its sort of alternative bluegrass mix. I've listened to them for a few years now, but have never heard such a fountain of hate as this thread creator.

i like listening to their music? do i really need more of a reason then that? sorry?
get over yourself. you not liking a band hardly warranted a thread.
