Hip-Hop bad for skiing?

I need your help for a project for school. I go to the University of Denver and I am doing an ethnography on freestyle skiers. I need some quotes for the paper, so think about this question: After seeing how some ski videos take the hip-hop scene too far (gun gestures, obscene music, etc), do you think that hip-hop is a negative influence on the sport? (No names will be used for the paper)

your logic seems kind of stretched. Negative influence? Gun gestures... really? Are birds a bad influence on skiing... all these bird gestures.. god damn. I get what you're saying but srsly who cares??

it's had an annoying influence on skiing, but not necessarily a bad influence. people at the highest level are still pushing the limits and progressing, so where's the negative influence? have you heard of any gang shootings at ski hills lately? when was the last time you saw a tourist get the shit kicked out of them because they were in somebody else's park? the music and culture have influenced some skiers (as well as athletes from a wide variety of other sports) to adopt a certain style, but it hasn't caused any type of regression.

kids losing track of what's important by being blinded with fame-and-fortune bullshit pipe-dreams are what's, if anything, causing "problems" in skiing.

well i was thinking hip hop like listening to it while skiing. that i dont think is bad, i like to ski to the beat

but as an influence on people, i think they are just listening to the wrong hip hop. theres like shitty rap like lil wayne, and then there is good stuff that isn't all fuck bitches, kill niggas (sorry), and get money.

you can paraphrase that if you want

the whole "im a thug cause i wear shit 8 sizes too big and have to keep pulling my pants up" garbage is fucking stupid, its annoying but i dont think negative really.

not callin you out or anything just lettin yah know for future it's Ahmet Dadali lol. Hope I was of help.

I don't think rap music has been a negative influence on the sport because whether people are thug or hipster it's still all about skiing. I have yet to hear of an incident involving a "thug" bustin caps in his fellow freestyle skiiers at the hill just cuz he heard it in a rap song. I listen to rap extensvely and I personally never have the urge to grip my nine and cap a foo if you know what I'm sayin.

You will fail your paper if that is your thesis. Hip hop is not bad for skiing, its simply annoying how far its gone. it isnt hampering the sport in any way really.

completely forgot about baggy shit and tall t's. i, personally, dont think that looks good. i dont wear like skin tight jackets and pants, i like some room, but i dont think you need to have your pants around you knees while skiing. and that has defenitly come from the whole rap culture.

but thats the thing with park. Other skiing like racers, most of the time mogul skiers, and just everyday skiers wear normal fitting clothes, hardcore skiers, especially, will wear really technical intense Arc'tyrex jackets and stuff like that, that are made of like super space material (seems like it). only in park do you see people sagging clothes.

so maybe hip-hop isnt mad for skiing as a whole, maybe its bad for just park skiing.

I still think that's taking it too far.

I mean, how is having people in XXXXL coats and pants ski past you

"bad"? Yeah, I think it generally looks pretty dumb, but it's not bad. I mean, do you

really think that's taking away from the sport?

Like somebody said above, people are still progressing and pushing the limits of skiing and when was the last time you heard about gang-related activity on the ski hill?

Also, though majority *are* in the park, you see people in their baggy clothes all over the hill.

i think it is bad in the sence that it takes away fans and new people form the sport

lets say i didnt ski, but i was looking into trying it, but i dont thin sagging all your shit and drowing in your clothes looks cool. well why would i wanna do that?

thats a reason why i dont like snowboarders so much. 85% or more of them dress like thugs... i mean they can be fine people, but the way they dress has actually turned me off from snowboarding

and the older generations, they see kids who look like idiots and think i dont wanna see this, i dont want my kids doing this. Its all about looking respectable... so yeah, its taken away from the sport

That's such a superficial reason to not go into something...I might be

totally off, but I have a really hard time believing that somebody who

was genuinely interested in learning to ski would look at the outerwear style of

some park skiers and think 'man they sure do look silly, fuck skiing!'

That would be absurd, absolutely nowhere does it say when you're beginning to ski, that you have to wear large baggy clothing.

I've been teaching skiing the past four years and I've heard some of the most random-ass bullshit from parents through those years...but not once have I run across a parent who has expressed concern that their child may begin to dress "thuggish" on the hill.

i have... it was the biggest reason my dad got me to ski instead of snowboard. when i started skiing the whole "thug" of sagging pants and shit hadnt entered skiing yet and was secluded to snowboarding and it was one of the biggest reasons my dad wanted me to start skiing instead of snowboarding. of course as a 20 year old NOW with a 70 year old dad it was 10 years ago but he was still a really old fashioned sort of person.

Hey, thanks for all of your input. I just needed a few examples and I think I got it. I didn't think hip-hop was bad for skiing, I just needed an argument.

well seeing as who are the main "hip-hop skiers" i dont think its been that bad. twall, harluat, thall etc...

skiers brought hip hop into skiing, hip hop didnt bring itself into skiing... i think its done great things for skiing, its just another culture of it... look at Hot Lunch, that involves no hip hop and its still real good, i dont know if this is irrelevent at all, but thats the way i see it

not bad .... but its kinda mainstream now to gangsta, nearly every brand makes a tall T and extra baggy stuff. I'm not say thats stupid or something but its kinda getting boring when every one is ride'n G. whould love so see a pro skier in tight pants one day

I don't really care. But sometimes I find it quite humorous that kids who come from rich families dress in giant tall T's and act like they be so GHETTO. Then they make edits with songs about G's and growing up in the hood.

i wouldnt consider them pro, but of corse they realy good. i was more talking about like x-games pro or JOSS pro.

i think its a good influence for those who have a passion for it, but it might keep away the average soccer mom from getting her baby some twins

yeah, exactly. the snowboard image turns parents off from starting their kids as a snowboarder. my parents didnt want me sitting on my ass in the middle of the hill with my pants around my knees and all that shit (exaggerating of course, except for sitting in the middle of the hill). They saw skiing, at the time (13 years ago i guess) as the "normal" sport where people weren't wearing that kind of clothes. now they are though, and it could be turning parents off. its the whole role model idea. Pros should wear helmets, they should be respectful and especially dress respectfully and do good things.

like ill watch ski videos with my parents and the only people they really like to watch are Seth Morrison, Hugo, CR, Pep, and Chris Benchetler... my dad thinks Tanner Hall is a fucking d-bag cause of how he tries to dress... as my dad says "like a black man".....

If anything Hip-Hop has helped our sport. It has helped promoted smooth style, rather than jerky spin to win tricks.

I personally don't really listen to this type of music with the exception of B.I.G. being raised on good ol tunes like Skynyrd. But there is no Denying Rap is good for skiing, and the best part of it is, if you don't like it. you don't have to rep it. even if you do like it. no one is forcing you to rep it.

be an indivigual

no, thats not from rap though... what part of rap makes people spin with style instead of all penciled out?

they spin with style because you get a better score, anyone can just haul ass and whip their body around in circles, but if you can do it and throw in a grab and make it look really easy, then your going to get a better score. rap does not play a part in any of that.

from what ive seen though, the smoothest people are those associated with hip hop. why this is, i cant say.
