Highschool girls/ religion

Rant. Leave now if you don't want to read.

Ever since a ton of people joined Young Life, I have been noticing a sharp increase in the number of hardcore religious girls in my area. And it's not that I have a problem with people believing in a higher being, it's just their reasoning, and they way they are acting nowadays.

I mean, they do young life for a few months, hanging out with fun, dynamic youth leaders, meet new people, go to places like camp Malibu, with a beautiful setting and religion being won into them through fun activities, come back and all they can think about is that week, attribute it to God, and lose touch with reality. What the fuck! I honestly want to just start going off on them, telling them they about how they don't even know about the majority of what's a part of Christian theology, what the history of it is, and how they can justify treating me any differently now, just because I'm Atheist. It wouldn't normally irk me that they are religious, except that they are doing it because everyone is, and it has become a fad.

Cliffnotes: Girls become religious after Young Life. They don't know their stuff. They treat Atheists differently. Religion treated as a fad.

Have you, people of NS noticed a similar such shift in the people of your schools' views towards religion?

im getting so sick of the bullshit religion is stirring up. no religion no war! im proud to believe in myself and not in god

word, I don't believe in religion, but I'm fine with it as long as the people who believe in it don't bother me about it.

I find that kids our age are moving towards either end of the spectrum. I hate what religion does to people. Wars are always started over religion. Name one war that wasn't. I'm to the point that I can't stand being around anyone that is so closed minded they can't accept evolution when it's starring them in the face. I could go on forever about this but I won't.

i am a roman catholic, but i mean im not like hard core, i go to church every few weeks, and stuff like that

its annoying when people use it like a fad

and that's what religions always seem to do, garner in the suckers. they'll get over it in a month when britney spears has another baby or something.

We just started reading Inherit the Wind in class and I can tell it's going to be heated with me being an atheist, and another kid who's very christian. I was going to make a thread about it on ns because I was wondering about the beliefs of people on here, haha I guess this one took care of that for me.

K well i'll lay it out then, I'm actully LDS other wise known as a mormon.... but you know, i think its wrong to go say like 'yo my religion is better because...' insert long explination. but you have to be understanding cause when people doubt or question with out knowing it gets others hurt. what gets me, is when you are a religion people will label you. but yea...i know what your saying, i dont like closed minded people either

you dont need to know all the history and theology right away to be a christian. that comes later. first its more important to just try to understand the basics

I just think a lot of people are asking the wrong questions about how and why we got here. If God exists, I doubt he gives a fuck if you're mormon or catholic or even athiest. He would be so far removed from the day to day drama of human life. I think, if God is out there, its a matter of you finding Him, not some guys knocking at your door giving you a book, or you going to hawaii with your youth group. That kind of thing has no place in my religion. There's way bigger issues out there for us, iMO.

interesting, I don't believe in god but, although I don't really follow any religions closely, I believe that there are moral values and just general day to day things on just being a good person in them. if you know what I mean, not in depth at all, just very surface layer be a good person sort of things.

literally the exact same shit si going on at my school, west linn high, its in the burbs of portland OR near mt. hood. everything you said is identical to what is going on here except its 'camp wildhorse' here. even my little brother is going to it now. every time he leaves to go to a meeting i tell him not to drink the punch. he still doesnt get it.

young life is a fad, trust me. when i was in high school, a fuckload of people got into it because it offered trips and shit. a few of them pretended to be into jesus and whatnot for a while, but almost all of them will snap out of it in a year or so. bottom line is everyone needs to make up their own mind about that kind of shit, and try not to get brainwashed by some youth group organization along the way, no matter how many sweet trips to acapulco they offer you.

i've never heard of this young life thing but at my school (catholic) we have this intense wanna be gangster come in and he yells at us and makes us come up in front of the whole school to "profess our faith", im not into the whole organized religion but i have some belief in a god

wellll im pagan, but when people believe in their religions and don't know what the fuck theyre religion is really even about, then they need to just die

fads are beat, i agree, but i've been religoius my entire life, i still go to church every week. i dont see how you could be athiest tho, how do you suppose everything came to be? at least believe something...it dont gotta be mine. I'd hate to go thru life "knowing" that i am just going to die and have nothing to believe in. whatever though, i got my beliefs you got yours. ski hard.

yah i was the same way, when everyone was in young life i just went to my regular church. im pretty sure im an agnostic now, but i havent looked it up or anything to see if that defines me. i believe that some sort of higher power exists, be it a god or a creator or whatever, but i just cant begin to define it in the same way an organized religion does. like, i dont feel comfortable saying FOR SURE that whatever created us MUST still be watching over us or even cares about us, etc. so yeah, i believe in some sort of higher being, but none of the religions out there really do it for me. i think that's what an agnostic believes.

believe in what you want. just don't push it on me.

I won't say that I believe in a god, but there are definitely lessons that can be learned from religions

my parents and my friends parents fought young life to leave our town because they viewed it as a cult

it was awesome

you're a cool kid for simply saying you have your beliefs, atheists have theres and although you don't agree that's that so whatever in the end let's go skiing. +karma if I can get it to work.

haha at my school its pretty much becom the place to score girls. it goes like this:

"dude i want some action...lets go to young life."

yes man, i see exactly where you are coming from. I went through a

catholic and Christian school system. the faculty in the school almost

seemed possed, not in touch with true personality, goodness,. christianity has developed into being a extremely narrow

minded religion, after being in the spotlight in my good old

skateboarding "pot head, badass" years. the way that religion is put

through to kids, and how people that are a part of the religion act

really effects the religion its self.

after going through

these different school systems and religions which differ in many

ways. I have realized that religion should be totally what you want it

to be. I can say that i agree with many different views on many

different religions, not saying a particular one which mostly leads to

a bad perception. I have had people go on and put me down because i smoke erb, and how i am a joke to religion. but in reality i look at every little thing alot different then alot of people would.

I believe that religion is the opium of the people, in that all religion serves to do is to distract people from the problems and worries of the real world

.

My school has a huge amount of people actually Anti-Religion. There are a couple who think it's a good idea to kill all Christians. Some just preach about how the world would be better without it, and that only the weak minded go for it.

One guy actually called the school, threatening to bring a gun and kill all the religious people.

Dumbass made us have a lockdown, cops came, police choppers buzzing around, and now he's expelled from the district.

True story.

And this was in Canada!

4. WW1

5. Cold war

6. korean war

7. franco prussian war

9. american civial war

10. spanish civil war

11. WW2

12. french revolutionary war

13. american revolutionary war

14. soviet war in afganistan

that being said much of the worlds conflicts still are brought on by religion.

and back to the point of the thread the Evangelical Christian movement in general gives me the shits. its not just a religion anymore but a political and ideologiocal weapon.

I know what your saying dude. I am a christian but the way people go about it bugs me sometimes. Young Life is a great program. I have alot of friends who go and they don't really go westboro babtist or anything but it might be done differently where you are. I respect atheists and their beliefs and I just expect the same respect from them. If I were you I would just ignore their comments if they are being rude(ex:telling you that your a dirty sinner and will rot in hell, thats not how jesus convinced people in the bible.)

yea dude, from first hand experience. religion is something i never understood as a kid, i just remembered bible verses and shit for school, and what did that reach me? nothing. the only thing that benifited me was that i no the story. then a 2 hour conversation with my brother, led us bolth to a full understanding and such a deep interpretation, its almost like it slaps you in da face!

Agnostic means you believe that we as humans do not know if god exists or not.

Your kind of a deist. Some believe george washington was. I worship Jesus not only because I think he was the sun of god but because he sounds like the perfect person. Like I should try to live my life like he did. If theres no heaven it wont matter because I wont be able to tell ,but before I die I will be able to know that I led a decent life and led it to the fullest.

I love america because if a church trys to convince its congregation to vote one way or another they lose tax exempt status. I think for myself and live for my god. I don't listen to a stupid church that tells me a bunch of stupid things. I have my own personal experience that have led me to believe what I believe.

Just feel like throwing out there that the athiests I know and about 99% of them on this site are legit. I don't have a problem with people just because they think differently than me.

yeah young life is getting pretty big at my school. i keep getting facebook event invitations to young life. but yeah alot of the people i know go to it for fun

the day people stop talking about it... the world will be one step closer to peace...

believe what you want... and shut up...

uhhh

im an eclectic pagan so i combine celtic recon. old norse, taoism, shinto, hindu, and wicca all kinda amalgamated togethor, so kinda lots o shit

damn my spelling suxxors tonight

I'm pretty fed up with the whole 'Christian' thing now. It seems that Christian is now almost a religion in itself rather than a banner religion, which included Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians and Baptists etc. A few years ago if someone asked you what religion you belonged to you would say, "I'm a catholic" now people are using the term Christian in the same way. However labelling yourself as a Christian now seems to involve attending some sort of appolistic church or pusedo-christian church. They usually target younger people and offer them cool things to do at youth group. That in itself isn't a problem but when they start using these activities to encourage people to come along, once people are there they tend force their beliefs on people.

Furthermore the leaders of these churches are usually outgoing and charismatic. They prey on weaker people who may not have many friends or are going through troubled times and show that they are welcomed into the church. In itself that is admirable and actually what alot of religion is about. But attracting these weaker members and giving them a good time, then making them believe that it was only a good time because of God isn't so flash. Especially when they put massive pressure on them to be baptised 'and to fully enter the community of God' then proceed to talk in tongues, and give emotional testimonials and all that bullshit.

One of my best mates started going to one of these youth groups a few years ago now he's a hardcore 'Christian'. He won't drink won't even really hang out with us cause he's usually busy doing stuff with his church friends. Like I organised a ski trip for my mates who only go skiing once a year, he was all keen for it, then pulled out cause his church was going to organise one later on in the season.

Another thing that gets me is why shouldn't you drink if you're a 'Christian' wtf?! I'm pretty sure Jesus turned water into wine. What were they drinking at the Last Supper? Wine. If it's good enough for Jesus then surely it's good enough for everyone!

Haha that probably doesn't make much sense

Quick notes:

Being 'Christian' is now different to what it was a few years ago.

'Christian' churches tend to entice young and vulnerable people

My friend is now a 'Christian' he's changed alot

We had a class debate after reading that, everyone was getting sooo pissed. We had to end it when the hardcore christian girl threw a binder at an atheist kid and told us we were all going to hell.

My old preacher used to come hang out with me and my family and drink a glass or two of wine and watch the game lol.

I dont think that in order to be a "good" christian you need to stop hanging out with your non christian friends. Just because me and someone dont believe the same things about god doesnt take away from other things we have in common.

Everyone on this site has different political and religous views but we all like skiing so we can all be friends.
