High school ski team

I recently got hurt and broke my wrist. I play hockey and hockey tryouts were today. I was unable to tryout for hockey therefore i cant play the rest of the season. My school ski (racing) coach offered me a spot on the team but its only racing. I can just go up and ski park he said but i still must compete in at least half of the scheduled events. I have never raced, never really had the desire to race but i see it as another way to ski before the weekend. Should i join ski team or should i stay with hockey and just wear a suit to every game and watch. Also if i do end up doing ski team i just bought a new pair of twin tips could i race with those? All help is appreciated.

Ski team but don't wear the tight clothes. Just race in your birthday suit if you have to. Anything but the tight clothes.

The race suit was put of the question before the topic even came up

OP do racing you will get a lot better at skiing from it. And don't worry about the clothes, You will probably look sillier if you are the only kid not wearing a racing suit than you would wearing one. and If your reason for not trying a new type of skiing is the tights don't look cool you are a poser and u don't actually like skiing.

For our ski team we have Slalom skiing and freestyle, i compete in both and love it. It's only 30 minutes to do the race course, i'd say way worth it.

Well said. Your right

high school racing is so fun. day off school, get to ride other moutains. lap park before and after your runs, hit on hot chicks from other schools in their tight race suits.

Whats wrong with you?

Clearly you can't turn for shit and the racers are 10x better than you as all around skiiers if you have this lame ass fuckin attitude. If I was the coach I'd tell you to fuck off even though ski team coaches always let 70-80% of the team who suck fuck around and have fun and do whatever the hell they want I'd just find that attitude insulting like your the one doing them a favor.

I switched from hockey as a junior. I had some friends on the team who actually raced prior years that we sucked but after I joined and some freshmen came in they weren't good enough. I could have hung out with them and crushed beers and smoked weed in the parking lot between runs but I chose to not partake that much and raced and wanted to get good. It was tight I made states both years individually and so did the team and became a legit ass skiier.

I would do it. What's the worst that can happen? You hate it and quit? I highly doubt you'll not like it. It's just more skiing you get to do, it'll most likely improve your skiing overall and you get to hang out/meet new people who enjoy doing what you do. I wish my high school had a ski team when I was there.

I quit hockey to ski race my sophomore year of high school and it was one of the best decisions I've made. I had no prior racing experience but I was burnt out of hockey and I wanted to ski every day. I ended up getting pretty into racing and having a really good time learning to run gates, and it definitely helped improve my skiing.

I say you should fully embrace joining the race team as opposed to dodging your commitments to the team as much as possible so you can ski park. Plus it's unbelievably satisfying to beat asshole racer kids who have been racing their whole lives, so it's worth getting good enough to be able to do that

Yes, absolutely join the ski team. I basically do the same thing you are talking about doing, and I race on pow skis/ park skis

Chances are you'll learn how to really flex a ski.

Fast GS and Slalom turns are some of if not the funnest things on skis. I promise.

What was that for? Kid seems to have a good attitude and is willing to give it a try.

My only good memories from high school are from my times on the ski team. I used to race in the OG 1080s and still made varsity, so no, it doesn't matter. As long as they're stiff enough to cut a turn. Hard.

In general the kids on a high school race team will take it about as seriously as you are right now.

For reference I competed in my state champs junior year and did the GS race in a speedo. Why? One of the seniors told me he didn't think I would. I got 15th. He got 30 something. Don't challenge me bitch.

So it's not super serious business. Have fun, you might learn something

For sure.

Theres nothing wrong with approaching it in a try and see way. But you can also approach it to be good and compete. Not everyone has it in them to push themselves in this sport which is sort of OK too. Some kids just don't want to go fast cause its scary. Some schools can't always fill a ski team of kids who aren't like this the team might need OP to compete and take it seriously and he might be the 20th best skiier and not needed but its up to him which of those he wants to be.

Lose the 'I don't want to wear a GS suit' attitude and get into it and OP might not only have fun but will become a much better skiier.

Stick with your hockey team. Show up to every game, be a part of the squad. Unless it's your senior year, you still have lots of hockey left. Teammates and coaches will be appreciative, shows you're still a part of the team.

Shit like that is how you earn yourself a letter, OP. Just my opinion though

You will become a 10x better skier from it. Trust me. Racing is a whole new discipline. The fact that you are hesitant to do it makes me think you suck just because you only care about the clothes aspect. Guess what...you show up in a xxxl tall tee you WILL look like a moron. You look like a moron to everyone who isn't a park rat as well on a daily basis.

Give it a shot. Pick up some cheap race skis used if you can it will make a MASSIVE difference. People on here will say oh yea I raced xyz with my twin tips...they can't even compare to true race skis.
