High School Seniors..UVM?

Its a club team. You pay fees, youre in. Reach out if you want, but I imagine they will look at the email, send a kind response, and then forget they sent it in 6 weeks. Not trying to be mean, but its the truth

I have friends who do it and love it, some having years of park skiing, some being ex-racers with very little.

We have our first meeting for everyone interested in joining the team within the first few weeks of school, so you don't really need to do anything before then. If you have any burning questions, feel free to shoot us an emailhttp://www.uvm.edu/~freeski/contact.

I'm a junior at UVM, and have been on the team for 3 years. It's a lot of fun and you can take the team as serious as you want, but its always good to get your moneys worth out of it. The school's a blast and I've met some amazing people here. Burlington's definitely a great spot!

I heard UVM is filled with greasy hippies. Thoughts? Actually a huge reason I've been leaning away from it too.

I visited the campus and there were a couple kids looking pretty strung out but other than the big handful of the postmodern granola vegan type hippies, the kids seem pretty normal, a lot of preps.

Not true. There are obviously some, but its such a big school it really does not make a difference. I would say about 5% are the gross hippy type. There are obviously some more liberal thinkers/activists, but honestly its not hard to stay away from that. Overall, I would say the school is dominated by various groups who all come together for their love of the out doors. Youll find your niche. I did, and I am not by any means a socialite.

burlington is the shiot when your 19-21. so u should go. lots of people and things to do with a small community so u will get to know everyone and the partys. but when you grow up you hate all the bros and how small and boring and un cultured it is. summer is really nice here too.
bule street is the center of the earth. the magnets always bring you back

No cars on campus unless you have work that requires it (forget the exact requirement in regards to minutes/miles). You can park on any road parallel to Church Street for free unless there is a parking ban. Best bet, find older friends with cars or know people who will let you rent a parking spot.

Champlain is just as bad, if not worse, than UVM when it comes to consisting of wannabe hippie yuppies from Connecticut.

Applied, got denied. Complete bullshit but I got into URI and St. Michaels so UVM can fuck itself.

I rented a spot from a frat my freshman year. Got me invites to all their parties too it was a worthwhile investment as a freshman. Plus I was the freshman with the car going to the mountain every weekend.

OK so I'm committed to UVM. Now, what's the best way to go about finding what dorm I want to live in and a roommate?

-I need to have a car up there for mountain bike races (I'll either get a job or try to get approval from the school) if that affects what buildings are possible

-I'd prefer a regular 2-person dorm

-I always thought the random roommate thing was interesting, but figure I may as well find an NSer or something so it's not that much of a gamble.

-Do you know about the bike team here? Great group of people and everybody loves it. I unfortunately didn't have my bike here for this past season (so pissed about that) but I'm for sure joining next year for DH racing. They also have vans for every race so if you won't need a car. Getting a car without a job is next to impossible here as a freshman anyway. At least I've never heard of anyone swinging it.

-Your odds of getting a forced triple if you go random are very high. If you're strongly against a triple, I'd advise towards finding a roommate ahead of time. However, people end up liking being in a triple much more than most people think. I'm sure other people will be looking for roommates on here soon so you can talk to them when that time rolls around.

i applied to Plymouth State in NH and that has some pretty baller skiing around it. Cannon for the pow days and Loon for the park days.

YUP stop by the UVMSSC Club Haus to get ALL your questions answered on skiing at UVM, membership, and more-- also we've got T-shirts, crew necks, and pint glasses that are way cooler to rep than any old smelly UVM merchandise!

I got in 16 days after applying with a decent 48K scholarship over four years. The money is nice but UVM isnt really my first choice so I'm holding out for something better.

Good luck to you tho.

WILLY G you're going to UVM?? hell yeah!

and @CheddarJack, I haven't heard anything about the bike team but I will definitely check it out. I am coaching the GROM Racing dh team as well as racing so I will be doing a lot of traveling on weekends in the fall/spring. I may just have to get a job or something; I'll figure that out later. Regardless, it's great to hear that there will be a solid group of people to ride with up there!

Correct. Just so everyone is clear, here's what dues get you:

-Pass to Stowe (this would cost ya $400 by itself)

-Transportation. The team has 2 vans every day during ski season.

-Competition fees. Any ski comp you want to do, the team will pay for.

-A coach. We have one of the most experienced coaches in New England to work with us skiing, at trampolines (the team jumps once a week throughout the whole year), and for preseason training

-Discounts. We get $20 mounts and 50% off service at Skirack (which you can walk to from campus), along with discounts on Orage, Faction, and Anon.

-Membership to the Ski and Snowboard club. This is usually $20, and gets you into movie premiers and other cool stuff for free.

UVM ends up spending more on each team member than dues cover, so it's really not a bad deal.

That's awesome. But, UVM is ridiculously expensive for out-of-state students. Their highest merit based scholarship is 12k a year, I believe, which really doesn't help too much considering the 50k it would cost to go there w/o it.
