My reaction to lame threads like "where was simon" and everyone other opinionated adolescent (and some adults in there too, I guess) who rip on nearly anyone who isn't among the top 10 most innovative skiers right now. I find it so sad that so many people can have such ignorant and unappreciative attitudes towards skiers who a) they've never met and b) are 10x better than them. I am sure many couldn't care less about this post, but it is getting so old. Have a little respect and honor, regardless of whether you deem the person worth it or not. I do notice how it is never the people that are out there working hard and involved in the upper levels of the sport who are making these judgments, it is the little spineless wiesels who think they are awesome because they can do a cork 7 or something. I think Teddy Roosevelt puts it best:

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

so you've never hated on a pro athlete before? in any sport?
i agree though that the attitude that accompanies lots of threads about pro skiers in SG has got to change

What you mean X-games? Ya I guess donating all the winnings to help a buddy walk again is pretty terrible, actually, it made me want to puke.

Well, I used to really dislike Monica Seles because she grunted so loudly when she hit the ball (if any of you remember that...). I also dislike most athletes who talk about themselves in near God status such as Shaq, TO, etc.

But the difference is I am having a hard time with their attitude and what they can control. I am not hating on TO for dropping a pass once in a while, because again, he is out there doing it and with a substantially greater skill set than I will ever have.

I guess my point should be that for a community that claims to be somewhat of an underground deal and a bit of a brotherhood, it is pathetic how little support there is for just about anyone.

I definitely agree. And in terms of the whole Dumont big air thing, I think there's something to be said for doing what needs to be done to win to help support a friend.

now i agree with that, it seems a bit ironic to badmouth people who help make the sport what it is, regardless of how much they seem to annoy you

I respect what you trying to do and karma for the post but trying to up the level of conversation on these forums is a pretty hopeless endeavor. As long as the majority of people on here are still in high schoolthis site then you will not escape the "i saw tom and jizzed today" posts. Maybe NS could create a over 21 forum for the 3% of us that are on here.

that makes sense. i think its ok to discuss, but not hate. i havent been involved in those threads ever just because there was nothing for me to say

im sick of people hating simon too. he likes to please crowds, thats his thing, doing what people think looks cool. He aslo gave the money to riley poor instead of just buying a car or something wich speaks to his charactor.

But i also think that part of the fun of ns is that you can be stupid here and people arent going to stop doing that

Are you fucking retarded? All of your posts are shit. He was appalled at the result. I think it is great that Simon donated all the money to Riley, however, it was a ridiculous win. PK and Jon were definitely the better skiers. Unfortunately, Simon had no control over that so we only have voters to blame. That's not Simon's fault and regardless, he was still one of the first big guys and he is helping promote the sport.

i completely agree, and your effort in the attempt is well put... but its hopeless to try to get the people on here to stop hating on pros and making pointless threads.

No hate to Simon for dub front superman, but its just the X-Games that should've been set up better, text to win was silly. but he took his wininngs and donated them to one of the best causes out there.

amen
No one to blame but yourselves

While I agree with what the OP is saying, I think it is good that there is a level of criticism on here. It's what fuels people to do things differently, and better. The biggest problem that I see is people having a hard time keeping the criticism constructive.

I haven't read the thread in question, but I'm going to have to disagree. Skiing has risen to a level where the top contest competitors are making nice amounts of money because thousands of people are willing to watch and care about what they are doing. Therefore, people loving/hating them is a part of their career now. If people didn't care about what they do, then there would be no "professional" status, they'd just be unpaid amateurs. They get their paychecks precisely because there are fans. Their's is a public career.

If this were skiboarding or some other tiny niche of a sport with no money, then yes, it is wrong to hate on the people bc they're just guys out there doing their thing. BUT these athletes have chosen a life where they are paid because people watch them. I don't feel bad when football players get called out on nationally televised press conferences for a missed pass, kick, tackle, etc....and I don't mind a skier being called out for a performance on national TV or any other spectator event.

no wai!!!!

why would you post that

i agree with you, every skier trying to make it has great skill and deserves respect

and enough with the fucking shitty threads

unfortunately...skiing has become a band wagon sport where everyone loves you when you at the top, but as soon as you slip people will walk all over you.
no respect i tell ya...NO RESPECT!

There is no money in skiing unless you have

A) started your own company

B) are on contract with a huge company and win top contests like x-games (we're talking 1st/2nd place here consistently)

C) work 10 other jobs

When will people understand?

BLAH THE SNOW IS FALLING BUT THERE IS NONE TO SKI ON!! LETS ARGUE ABOUT LAST YEARS X-GAMES FOR THE ONE MILLIONTH TIME!!!!!!!!!! give it up already, it is one fucking contest that was text to vote, and all the prize money was donated. WHO GIVES A FUCK!!!!!!!! Someone here tell me, off the top of your head right now, no fucking google, who won x-games slope in 2005? better yet who came in second. NO ONE CARES!!

If I'm not mistaken the thread was about the Target logo himself, Simon Dumont.

I understand that skiing tends to be an upper-middle class pastime, so the definition of "money" is inflated. But to the average working-class person, making any money to ski is a privileged position. It's alot better to ski for Target, than it is to be a cashier in a Target.

Yes, but not only Simon. I disagree that it is better to ski for target. If you aren't winning several major comps per year and have no other sponsors, I'd say a full-time cashier would make more than you. I know that's a little bit of a twisted argument but that's how I see it. Maybe five people total in the industry make a six figure salary.

if our sport is every commented on by sportscenter, and someone is scolded for bobbling their last slopestyle run, missing a grab on a trick, or flailing their arms, i will quit and i hope that all of you would. let's NOT let our sport become this, or our athletes WILL become like TO, Shaq, whoever the fuck else.
and word up Trip, you've got your head on straight homie. and to whoever asked, i have NEVER seen triple_strum anything but stoked on skiing.

didn't garnier win and tanner came in second? im pretty sure but i dint google to check. I just remember

it because garnier came out and killed it!! so sick!

you kind of just have to accept 98% of newschoolers populous is comprised of very very very very dumb people

I agree, i dont see any reason to hate on any skiers. I understand liking someones skiing more than anothers, but there no point in "hating" what that other person is doing
