HEY EVERYONE WAKE THE FUCK UP.

it's not the people who kill the sharks that are the problem. It's the people who pay up to 90 gbp for a soup with the fins in. If there was no demand for them these guys wouldn't do it but it's good money and it's there livelihood. i'm sure if i was in their position i'd have no problem doing the job.

but yeah, fuck dem people-that-eat-the-shark-fin-soup

As rough as it sounds, yea, pretty much. Unless people who fish for a living can do it without causing as much damage as they do to the environment it's only going to be worse for everyone. If the ecosystems of the ocean collapse it will be a lot worse than if a relatively small percentage of the population has to take up a new profession. Obviously something like that would happen over years and years and not over night, but I feel like it has to happen if we want to preserve the health of the planet. It seems like parts of the commercial fishing industry are slowly dwindling away as it is. If large scale commercial fishing ended, it would have an impact on the economy (who knows how large) but economic downturns are recoverable. The loss of species isn't. If you look at the health of the oceans in small periods it doesn't look that bad, but take a step back and view it on the large scale and you'll see that the outlook isn't great.
