Apathetic; is the perfect word to describe the significant majority of civilization on earth. Take a look at this video, it makes me sick that I live with people like this.

This pissed me off immensely ever since I was a really little kid sharks fascinated me to no extent I learned everything I could about them. I remember seeing a 60 minutes or something along those lines about people in asia who killed sharks for their fins and I started crying. I love sharks they're amazing animals and these people's complete lack of respect for them pisses me off. I think the beginning stated it it clearly how useless the killings are. Gordan Ramsey said, that it didn't taste like anything, like it could have been replaced with glass noodles and you wouldn't tell. Followed by it would be better with chicken or sweet corn. The shark almost takes away from the soup. I hate that they kill so many. And all of those fins laying out to dry each one of those is a dead shark. It disgusts me, gnikcuf skoog.

this is fucking disgusting. i'm not against eating meat, and i'm not a vegetarian. but we should use as much of the animal as we can if we're fucking killing it.

Complete hypocrite. I'll eat the fuck out of slaughtered cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs. But when it comes to sharks I have a real soft spot.

yeah except what is different is that with these sharks they are literally being slaughtered only for their fins, after that they release them where they are rendered useless in their natural habitat and slowly die. i think that if you are going to kill an animal, at least have it serve multi-purposes and not just one small part of it being killed, that is what the real problem here is. besides sharks aren't bred in farms like cattle are, we don't have as much control over them as we do in the reproduction of cows, chickens and pigs. i just think thats something we really need to look at...

this is what pisses me off so much about these very backwards Asian countries and their blatant disrespect for our marine creatures, the chinese, along with the japanese, are fishing many sea creatures(sharks whales dolphins) out of existence, and for what? to make a fucking expensive soup that the ingredient that is so hard to be obtained doesn't taste like anything

and yes i am mad

i woke up at 6:30 to find that my teeth were in so much pain i couldnt even close them together...

no park skiing today

Not that finning is ok, but you do realise that loads of other species of fish are being overfished into extinction right? And that animals die in horrible conditions for the meat that Americans/Western countries eat as well? Why aren't you as upset about that? As someone else said earlier, if you guys aren't vegetarians, you're massive hypocrites.

I read an article in the new york times this fall, that the fins provide absolutely not taste to the soup. The only reason they put it in there is to attract people to try it. I think they also said that sharks will be extinct in the next 10 years if it doesn't stop.

Unless theyre *vegan* theyre hypocrites

get the fuck over yourselves.

Who says its ok for one species to be raised for slaughter, and the other not?

Is it ok to use monkeys to run electrotherapy experiments on as well?

God that is fucking sick... Gordon Ramsey is the man and I hope he continues his efforts to rid the world of this terrible dish.

I fucking hate shit like this, they do the exact same thing with dolphins except the amount they kill is much larger. If anyone's interested there are tons of films on it you can watch online.

I still dont think your looking at the problem here. Even near the end of the video when he had the resto owners for a meeting, the lady said something along the lines of "If we dont use the whole shark, then we wont use it at all". Thats the point. It still is not right to fish and hunt species out of existence but at least when they fish fish they use the whole thing.

With sharks, (and I assume other animals) they only use about 5% of it and just leave the rest. And like someone else posted above, cattle and other meats in Western countries specifically have farms to raise the animals up, not killing out the wild animals left.

But they cut down forests, and destroy habitats just for cattle production. Yes they raise cattle for production in lets say Brazil, but they destroy acres of Natural Rainforest in order to create a higher production rate of cattle. Does this not also upset the entire chain, and wipe out species? Not only this, but are the negative effects of cattle production on a mass scale worth it?

just adding this, cows belch methane. Methane is one of the worst greenhouse gasses and the amount of "cow methane" produced is sickening too.

thats another bad aspect of modern life but it doesnt change the fact that its very bad to kill an animal in a very very painful way.

its even worse if the used animal is part of an endangered species.

OF COURSE ITS WRONG TO KILL ANIMALS FOR FOOD. i cant really bring you an argument why we should. yes it tastes good but a lot of stuff does. nutrition is also not an option because you can get all the stuff you need from other sources.

but its the way it is. i eat meat too, but again, i cannot really defend it and i am probably just to lazy to change. but there is a difference in "humanely" slaughtering (in the original meaning of the word) animals that were raised for this purpose than a wild species.

Id love to see what you think is humane slaughter...

Unless you count having the neck slit, and skinned while they bleed out, cutting their horns off with an axe or saw of sorts??

Or with chickens, when they electro shock them, which doesnt always work, and regardless if it doesnt, go ahead and throw em in boiling water?

Its not even just this that turned me away from meat, but the amount of artifical hormones placed in meat nowadays.

Chickens so fat, their legs break, Cows too fat to stand... Its no bueno man.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to eat organic/cage free meat.

Theres a direct tie to the obesity problems and the amount of hormones put into the meat industry.

I go shark fishing all the time with my father and we have never killed a shark. They are honestly the most interesting animals in the ocean and it is so much fun to fight them. They are so strong and powerful took me two hours to reel in a mako, and after we released it back into the sea. Stuff like this, as well as with dolphins, really upsets me because these fisherman aren't harvesting the sharks and dolphins like we do with salmon and other fish, they are extracting them from the ocean.

I had shark fin soup at a wedding before (it hurts me now to think how may sharks were killed for that), and I agree with Ramsay in that it does not taste any different than something like chicken noodle soup. I felt sick when he walked onto that roof. At least somebody is trying to stop this.

in austria, we have pretty legit regulations. of course there black sheeps. but we can definitely reach a level where animals have enough place to stand and all that stuff and can live a legit live.

and in middle europe, you have to either electroshock them (what i know has a pretty legit success rate) or use this bolt-thingy for cows/pigs. both methods benumb the animals so they dont feel the slit throat. i have a lot of friends that have a farm at home (or at least a few cows) and its a pretty legit act to kill an animal these days around here.

i know that sometimes even here and in poorer countries, its not always that nice, but by supporting the right companies, we might end up in a situation where not too much animals have to suffer.

Thats more reasonable.

In the US though, shit is gnarly.

Esp since companies are looking to south american for their beef, which has few to none regulations.

seriously. they kill sharks, dolphins, and whales in inter-national waters where the fishing of these creatures is illegal (at least for the dolphins and whales). Its bullshit.

Ok, as a pescitarian, (I'll eat fish, not shark though, and no, I will not get into the politics behind my diet choice). This pisses me off, it's a beautiful animal, and they're wasting it. They're eating it for mostly traditional reasons. I'm happy Gordon is campaigning against this, this should be stopped. And even just watching that video, I've been considering more and more to stop eating fish. I just don't know though. I can't do meat anymore. Seeing it just chopped up there, it's gross to me. I saw this thing called a "meat salad" just chopped meat together, no veggies or anything, it was the first time I actually felt sick seeing a meat product. I feel just as sick watching that documentary on the soup. Please, I hope it stops

Other than the fact that ALL other animals that are consumed my most people are bred and raised by farms for the sole purpose of being killed an eaten. Sharks would be alive in their natural habitat even if there were no people to kill them. Cows, pigs, chickens etc. on the other hand, are only alive for people to eat. They're domesticated for human consumption. I have a real problem with the whole sea food industry. No companies that fish for salmon, sharks, or other types of fish like tuna replace what they kill. They're not really being farmed, just stolen, so we shouldn't treat fishing like it's an industry in the same way as cattle farming is. If you want a salmon, go catch it yourself. If you want a deer, elk or moose, go shoot it. If you want a steak, feel free to go buy one since animal domestication for human consumption has occurred on a large scale for thousands of years. The problem with fishing is that it's happening on too large of a scale to be sustainable. The same thing happened with buffalo when the United States was expanding westward in the 1800s. Killing in large numbers and wasting much of the product lead to the species almost being wiped out. Too bad there's nothing we can really do about it. People who fish commercially make a lot of money, and whoever has the money has the power.

..well at least it gives the opportunity to all the poor little fishies the shark bullies and eats a chance to gang up on the fucker

Truth. It's not so much about morals as it is environmental sustainability. Although it would be much better for the environment if we were all vegetarian since it's much more efficient.

Look at my other posts. I raise that fact as well. I understand that part of my argument was a bit radical, but read the rest.

holy fuck, I remember The Cove was so eye opening, I recommend that everybody see that movie at least once.

so let me get this straight. you kids have a soft spot for a fucking fish that gets its fins where probably eat meat every day that came from butchered, tortured animals, but seeing a dead corpse getting pissed on by american soldiers is ok?

what makes me sick is the lack of consistency. i certainly don't condone the slaughter of animals for a delicacy that may as well be a cup of noodles, but it's still a fucking fish. who gives a shit. it's like that dumbass chick who walks by a starving homeless guy and feels bad for the DOG. ohhhh i know, animals are cute n shit, but jesus. have some compassion for your own species first.

back to the video though, i like seeing people with a little power in this world doing something with it. i have a lot of respect for gordon ramsay and that he takes the time to enlighten people when it comes to some of these fucked up things that go on.

Obviously that's awful (is there a thread on this?), but that is an entirely different thing. As much as a dead body being pissed on is pretty disrespectful, they're dead. It's not right, it's not cool, but they're dead, they're not going to care, not as big of a deal as this imo.
