Hey East Coasters...lets track the first (potential) snow storm of the season in here!

the drum beats are getting louder for the first widespread snowstorm for the Northeast during the beginning part of next week. Nice high pressure draining down some cold air from the north and preventing the storm from cutting too far north. The signal has been getting a bit stronger on each successive model run, and while far from set in stone it's looking pretty good for at least getting some white on the ground. Here's a snapshot from tonights 00z (overnight) GFS (Global Forecast System). These maps are not to be taken verbatim as sometimes sleet/freezing rain can be tallied as snow.

Newest model is coming in right now (11:26 EST) and it's looking pretty good so far. The blue / red dotted lines are the temperature at 850 mb, or roughly 5000 feet. Anything above 540 is above freezing, and 850mb is considered a critical part of the atmosphere to have below freezing to get substantial snow. Notice the high placement.

It's centered roughly over Quebec, and since highs spin clockwise cold air will be funneled down from far NE canada right into the precipitation.

It's still really early but there's finally something to track. I'll post more maps as they come out. Merry Christmas hopefully it's finally time to get this party started!

Here it comes. Doubt this is a long winter late March-April should be warmer than normal but theres going to be 2 intense months of extreme cold (like a lot of what you don't want to ski in) and snow.

Since the weather is acting so whacky when it does get cold it probably won't be too dry should be some good storms.

and just like that, it looks like crap except for NNE. Wow lol.

Went from 100 to 0 real quick

See what the run tomorrow does...I bet it changes 2 more times both ways before the end of the weekend

pretty hardcore consensus now between all of the global models. Warm warm warm. Rain into VT/NH/ME

We're getting rain tomorrow or the next day I thought. Then snow on tuesday. Im talking the tuesday storm

THANK GOD. Hopefully Western New York gets hit as hard as they are saying! This would be about a week before I head out to Whistler so to get out before I leave would be soooo sick!

Is a foot on Tuesday even going to be skiiable with no base underneath anywhere?

What do you all think is the necessary amount for areas to open up trails/lifts that are currently closed and make it worth the drive during the holidays?

Don't get me wrong though this could provide a perfect quick base a foot of slushy with a quick melt and then the freeze/cold front coming in could cover up tons of rocks pronto and make everything without snowmaking good to go after the next storm hits.

I don't even care about the snow at the moment as the cold temps. We just need some proper cold temps for a few days so places can hammer out the manmade. Once people get up and running I'll care more about the natural.

If we got both I wouldn't complain, tough start though.

freezing rain predicted for the Catskills :(

I take that back, the highest elevations are expecting 3-5" but then switching to freezing rain. Lower elevations are expecting freezing rain into all rain

My pass is blacked out so I wasn't fuckin with this anyways but it looks like everywhere north will get a real nice slushy layer to cover the rocks before the cold temps come and freeze it all up. Good for the trees and all that.

looks like the loaf is getting the most, so I'll be there if the forecast holds

Same here. Probably going up Wednesday. Let's just hope that rain/ice forecast for late Wednesday doesn't happen... or at the very least holds off so Wednesday can be a full day of great skiing :)

whats the deal with this storm in the Midwest/east? my sisters trapped here in Utah with her BF (not a bad thing tbh) and cant get back to Detroit due to massive delays/cancellations. hopefully you guys get in on some of the fun.

It's hitting Buffalo right now, snowed for an hour and now it's sleeting/raining and windy as fuck.

~2 inches of crusty snow followed by sleet, rain and ice on my drive to work this morning as expected. Location: Very Southern Catskills

We got 4 inches I think. then a little wintery mix packed it down. That said not bad. Also had temps under 20 so the guns were cranking last night.

So far it only stuck twice where I live and both was for a fay or so tops. This looks like it might hold even in patches for a week or so, if the temps drop, maybe actually start building a base.

ended up shredding sunday river. They reported 10 inches but I'd say it was more like 6 and then changed to sleet pellets. The morning was the best but overall still an awesome day, would have liked more snow but it was a good start!

heard the sleet at 3am, shut off my alarm and rolled up to mt wachusett at like 1:30. The shitty sleet actually worked out though, the 3 inches of pellets skied well and froze to the grass so you could ski pretty much anywhere even though there was no base.

Yo jerry, get the fuck outta my way, I'm drivin here

My 5 hour drive yesterday through it. Other than some cunt almost putting me into a guardrail, and flying past people that were practically stopped, it was fairly uneventful.
