This summer I was talking/listening to some Canadians and a lot of times something came up aboot them planting trees. Its like they get dropped off for a while and plant trees in the wilderness and shit. Is this a really popular job or something in Canada or what, it actually sounds kinda fun, just chillin with your freinds out in the middle of nowhere. Also is this like a Canadian Government initiative or somethin?

ya its the in thing we plant a tree...... nah ive never heard about that but still must be cool

and we never say 'aboot' so dont make fun of us, eh?

yeah i heard about that too. they have a similiar thing in the states for maintaining national parks and wilderness areas. I dont reember what it is called but i remember watching a couple things on tv about it.

tree planting is a super popular summer job, the first year its hard to make money though. you end up spending it all on beer and tree planting gear.

try www.outland.ca for more info. everyone that i know thats gone planting has worked for them

Ya... isnt it true that you work like 3 days a week and make something like 200-300 a day...... A group came to my school and gave a presentation about doing it for a summer in BC......

not all who wander are lost.

you are paid buy how many trees you plant, it is a good job, but very demanding in order to make enough to come out with a profit

So the deal is, loggers come in, strip a forest down to the dirt for the timber, which is shipped off to make paper, and pencils and cardboard and whatnot, then in the mess that's left over, a thrasher comes in, pushes all the broken branches to the side digging trenches in the dirt. Then they hire a bunch of students to come in (in my area it's mid april - end of junish) and live in the forest (or what used to be the forest) and they live in tents, fight swarms of mosquitos and black flies, shower and change their clothes once every 2 weeks, and put little trees into holes at 9 cents a peice. Doesn't sound like much, but once you get good at it, you're pullin 2 grand a month or more.

That's what i'll be doing next spring, i'll own a nice car at the end of the contract :)

ps. This job is not for lazy people. City people, beware...

I wouldn't call it a 'sweet job'. It's a hell job, and you have to work your ass off. But if your willing to go hard, you get paid well.

just for planting trees all day? I wish i was canadian. wait....no i dont.

Turning is for when stuff gets in your way.

yeah tht looks really hard and you have to live in a tent and stuff. I guess you wuold make lots of money but you have to pay for a bunch of stuff and looks like a really repetative job and stuff. think of all the bugs that would piss me off so bad

i have a buddy who's been planting trees out west for about 4-5 years now. he's some kind of tree planting manager (if there is such a thing). i guess he makes big bucks. he's pretty much a hippy though....

'i can't see where i'm going'

'dude, you just drove across the front lawn of the motel'

And I hear there's many stores and resturants that won't allow tree planters because the basically smell.

'What's wrong with the ceiling?'

'You're hitting it with a golf club'

LOL! yes...they stink bad...if they aren't near a lake, then they usually only shower when they come into town and only if they can find place to shower. Sometimes that's once every 2 weeks...sweating all day long, my buddy wore the same shirt for a month straight...then he came to my house for a day...it was gross. I used to work at a pool, and you'd always know when planters had been there to shower...there'd be dust and mud going down the hallway and a musty smell in the locker rooms.

Well, I'm too lazy to read to post so i'll just answer the question:

It's not really a national past time, just a bi-product of the foresty (logging) industry, which there is a lot of in BC. Sounds kinda cool though. If you really like being up in clearcuts (not as nice or easy to move around in as the remaining forest).

hah i talked to a guys brother who did it for the past 2 summers and holy shit it sounds like the finniest job. not something i would want to do but he said that they would work super hard all week and every weekend go to town stay in the cheapest hotel with lieterall 15 people sleeping in a tin room and just get completely wasted and shit. He said that they werent allowed into a bunch of hotels almost everywhere in town wouldnt let them go in till they showered. He would wear the same clothes for a week including sleepin in them, that is kind of groos once you think about how sweaty you would be. He said they saw all these crazy logging guys that work for the lumber companies get in a giant brawl with a binch of hippies and stuff said they were all crazy. sounds like a wierd very hard job
