hematomas and body armor

Story:

So I was in Telluride's park the other week and was having fun. Then I wasn't having fun. I caught an edge and ate shit off the rainbow. I land on my side *hard* and lose all my air for like a minute. My side is really sore and shit, so I go in and ice it. Next thing I do is take a piss, and its pure red... blood. I go to the dr. and get a CT scan, its a sub-cutaneous hematoma of my kidney. Means no skiing for the next 2 months. (which might as well be season) I don't want this to happen again, and I'm not silly enough to beleive I'm not gonna eat shit again.

Question: Who wears body armor and what brands do you favor?

almost same exact thing happened to me but it was my splean and im out for 6 months or more

i landed almost as hard as you on my hip early this season (twice actually, resulting in a larger than softball size bruise that changed just about every color in the rainbow and barely any strength in my left leg), so i bought some mountain boarding hip/ass pads because if i'd have landed on it one more time something bad would have happened. they help immensely - i could basically take a rail shot right on them and barely even feel it. the only reason i stopped wearing them was because it's been so hot lately and they're a fucking bitch to hike in and make you all sweaty.

Strode, the exact same thing happened to me in January. I fell on a rail and my left thigh swelled had a bruise like 5in across. I wnat some of those pads for next season.

no they don't restrict your skiing at all - they are all spandex and the pads are all removable and pretty thick. i also have xxl ski pants though because i'm a big dude - if you have smaller pants they might be sorta noticeable, but mine hardly were. the only thing i didn't like about them (besides the sweatiness on hot days) was that the ass pad hung a little low and rubbed against the inside of your leg when you walked.....didn't bother me on the hill though, and i probably could have just cut the pad a couple inches if i wanted to. but they kick ass, i walked away from some hard ass falls with no damage whatsoever.

but yah if you have a hip injury they could be the difference between the end of your season or just a minor bump in the road. i just stopped wearing them a few weeks ago because my hip was finally 100% but i'll probably sport them next season on days where i feel like trying new rails. and mine are made by a company called gritXgear. dunno if they have a website or anything but i got mine at gart bros

Thanks Strode. I'm looking at the dainesse boarder shorts. Mesh setup, just like my biking upperbody armour. Thanks for the info.

lol^yah my friends gave me shit about them until i showed them what my hip looked like and why i was protecting it. i still call them vagina pads though

It might not help that too much dude, pads are just there for an added layer of protection against bruises, cuts, etc. Not there to make your body completly invincible. That was a lesson I had to learn biking in the Alps :P

oh and just in case you were wondering i was trying air to fakie on a hip jump for the first time and i caught my edge on the lip, which threw me out into the flats, completely horizontal, and my whole 190 lb girth landed square on straight ice on my hip. the whole time i was in the air i was like ''well there goes the rest of my season'' and when i landed it was just numbing pain through my whole leg. and my asshole snowboarder friend who was right behind me didn't even stop and pick up my pole that i dropped he just laughed at me

skeletools have some good looking pads too... i hate having those balck and blues all oer your legs, then you can't sleep right and sometimes can't walk.... driving home from the mountain sux too

ya guys, the same thing that happened to strode and you guys happened to me, but mine was lierally the size of a football on my right hip. i went to the ER room and the doc told me its called bursitus (spelling??) its where the protective sac of fluid called the bursa that is around your ball and socket type hip joint gets hit really intensly and it just swells to a massive size. the doc said that it is one of the most common injuries in road biking (i didnt know that it was that easy to hurt yourself road biking... but you learn something new every day) anyway thats what it is. it will teach you quick to learn to balance on them rails, cuz it hurts.
