Aight, so I have suffered from dial up my entire life until the day my neighbor got wireless. It worked fine in my house and we used it. I went on a trip and used some wireless networks at hotels, and I don't know if that's what messed it up, cause we picked up the wireless after that at my sister's house that is liek the one from my neighbors and that worked out fine. Anyways, on my computer it says Im connected to the wireless network, but once I try to go on any website, it doens't work. It's not password protected either otherwise it would have asked me to enter a password. So, my computer tells me Im connected and the signal is really good, full green bars. What can I do to go online? It's not working on either of our computers(dell and a mac).

Oh and don't say I deserve this cause Im using my neighbors wireless. 8 years of dial up and waiting 2 hours for a shanghai six trailer to load is punishment enough.

thanks in advance

switch to microsoft client if you have a PC. If you have apple you're fucked. But you should also try disabling then re-enabling the radio signal and try repairing the network.

All it means is the computer is not assigning you an IP address, which might mean that your neighbors installed some security while you were gone.

I already tried disableing and repairing it. It didn't work. It assigns me an IP address, and it's renewed when I try to repair the network. I can't get on AIM either. I think macmahoon(sp) is right. I think its not working for him either. thanks for the help. If theres anything else I can do let me know. thanks.

they might be repairing his internet service. that's pretty much the only explanation as to why you'd have full bars and still not connect.

yeah my internet went out last night so i busted out the wireless modem i got with my psp and nothing would connect i was pissed

wireless is the most unreliable technology that I know of. man, fuck it. I wish I could help. disable your connection, then enable it. try going to the ip address of the wireless (maybe, http://192.168.1.1) if you can do that, that means that their internet isnt working, but the wireless is...

good idea, i should have done that with my xbox 360 to my router.... rents would be kidna mad if there was a whole in teh middle of my finished basement tho

maybe he secured his network so freeloaders can't get a free highspeed connection. ha! is there a little lock beside his wifi network when you do a scan?

no, no lock, and i pick up a little bit of other networks and they have locks. So, thanks for the help. It looks like my neighbor is out of town and they either turned off the internet, but not the wireless or it's broken. I don't know. I guess ill just have to wait till they get back or wait a week until i get to college.

I'm pretty sure I know what happened because it's happened to me before. I have airport wireless internet.

If the airport module or whatever signal giver is plugged in but doesn't have the e-thernet cord plugged into the wall it will still give the signal but without results. Then it would have the effect of showing on the computer that you get the signal but you actually receive no internet access. This is a good possibility. If your neighbor uses internet often they will just realize this and plug it back in. It could be a waiting game.

I was going to suggest that he got his wireless encrypted to keep you and others from stealing it but if your not seeing the lock then thats not the case. When my wireless goes down I cycle my router by completely unplugging everything, this resets the internet stream and it usually gets it going.

You could reset his router and modem by cutting power to his house and then reinstating it! go on a mission to his switchboard somewhere in his house and kill the power for a 10 sec, turn it back on and get the hell out of there

I did the ipconfig. I got an ip address, a subnet mask and a default gateway, all different numbers that were not zero.

so it looks like what someone else was saying about the airport being unplugged or whatever. They will reset it once they get back I guess.

As far as how i am on. I have dial up. and it takes forever to do anything. thanks for the help.
