Help us save FREEskiing from total DESTRUCTION!!!!!!

Ok, so I've decided that there are some things going on the industry that are really bad for the sport, and for the sake of the sport's future, I just couldn't hold my tongue any longer.

Basically, since I'm part of the competition scene, I figured I should add my voice to all the contest skiers who are telling everyone what this sport is supposed to be about. Now, I know you are probably sick of it, because you hear these kind of rants from the contest skiers ALL the time (right?), but whatever, after all, it's important that I tell the rest of you, what I think the sport is about, and how I think you all should represent it.

First off, I hear that Candide is still getting support from sponsors. This is an absolute atrocity, because I personally don't think that his type of skiing is what the sport should be about. The messed up ski industry that allocates money to people like him, just takes away money that should all be going straight into competitions, training facilities, and contest skiers, because that's what the sport is about!

Also, I watched "Into the Mind" recently and I have to say that our sport is not supposed to be about high production value films with with hi-res images and time lapses! Doesn't anyone remember how this stuff all started, with movies like 13 and Degenerates, pure ski porn shot on DV tapes, with no plot lines or effects. That's what this sport is about! Timelapses and high def images in movies are killing the sport!

And then, there's these guys who have started hitting the LOWER bar on some handrails, that's NOT how it's supposed to be done! I think it's really stupid, and I absolutely do not support it (even though I could totally do it if I wanted to). If we as a community don't rally together and put a stop to this, it is going to completely destroy our sport!

So, if you really care about your sport remaining "FREE", then help the competition skiers put a STOP to all of the above behaviour. Also from now on, please, represent the sport only in the manner that we agree with and support.

Because, if the way you choose to approach the sport doesn't conform to our vision, then it's definitely not "FREE", and that's what this sport is all about!

In fact it appears that the only way to ensure that you are truly fighting for "FREE"skiing, is by spending a lot of energy focusing on what other skiers should or shouldn't do.

I know there's different opinions out there, and it can all seem very confusing, but just look at it this way, as long as you check in with all the urban skiers, film skiers, big mountain skiers, competition skiers, and recreational park skiers, they can all likely provide you with a list of things that they don't like, don't support, and in their opinion, you should NOT do. That way, as long as you follow their direction, and avoid doing any of those things, you can feel confident that you are keeping the sport true, and FREE!

PS I also wanted to say that Henriks' hairstyle really really pisses me off! You have no idea the mental anguish it causes me, and I just hate what it's doing to MY life!

you lost me at:

after all, it's important that I tell the rest of you,

Kinda hard to take it seriously even with the orange name suggesting you MAY know what you're talking about...

OP is the supposed to be the Head Coach of Team canada.

However, it's my guess that this wasn't posted by him.

This thread is obviously sarcastic.

Just look at this: "Because, if the way you choose to approach the sport doesn't conform to our vision, then it's definitely not "FREE", and thats what the sport is all about!"

If you guys are taking this at face value, maybe you need to read it again.

definitely this, its actually pretty funny how many of you couldn't see the blatant sarcasm, do you really actually think that comp skiers think this way?

"In fact it appears that the only way to ensure that you are truly fighting for "FREE"skiing, is by spending a lot of energy focusing on what other skiers should or shouldn't do."

"Wow, this thread is obviously very serious! Better post to show my disagreement!"

Made me laugh. Seems like Logan and other skiers seem very focused on the industry as a whole and instead should just focus on their own skiing.

I was totally with you up to the second to last paragraph. How the hell am I supposed to keep up with all the urban skiers, film skiers, big mountain skiers, competition skiers, mogul skiers, and recreational park skiers? Do you have any idea how many people that is? If it's not on Brobomb I don't care about it.

hahaha lost it at you're pissed at Candide getting sponsored, but your goal is to keep skiing FREE!

This is a good trololool....who dafuq is Trennon tho?

trennon paynter, canadian halfpipe ski coach. and very successful ns troll. lol so many times

This is incredible. The point he is trying to make is to stop imposing your views of what skiing SHOULD be and how it should be done on other people. Essentially using the same logic as people bitching about the olympics and competition skiing to show how stupid telling people how to ski sounds. Sarcasm at its finest.

Also, he is the coach of the Canadian halfpipe team

Just look at the title "Help us save FREEskiing from total DESTRUCTION!!!!!!". Its 100% sarcastic. It is making fun of Logan Imlach's rant a few days ago, and all the people complaining how the industry is being destroyed.

Brilliant post. Dead on. I'm over all the fear mongering, hyperbole, misguided and self important clamoring for how it should be. Perfect lampooning . If everyone goes out and pursues the kind of skiing that brings them absolute unfettered joy, the rest will take care of itself. If your goal from the jump is to pursue a career in this niche of skiing, good on ya and good luck, but just like a guy with a masters in fine art, you should probably anticipate economic insecurity. Unfortunately, we can't force others to share our passions or convince them to dump money into the aspects of the sport that we personally value most, all we can do is our best to share the stoke. I think if anything is "killing the sport" (hate that phrase and believe it is fundamentally untrue) it is the cannibalization of other marginally different aspects of the sport. Last point, it has been said, but I don't think the Olympics has killed all of these small production companies, but rather the proliferation of skiing talent, bigger and better parks, the affordability of kick ass filming and editing equipment and the saturation of high quality FREE footage that is released almost daily makes it seem less necessary to drop $25 on a DVD featuring many of the same athletes.

All of you taking this seriously and disagreeing with him only goes to prove his point that no one should be telling other aspects of the sport what they should be doing and how they should be doing it.

Funny, but, Fuck fis... Fuck the olympics.... Watch the leach companies come in soley because of the olympics.... Suck up money, and once our sport is as boring and regulated as arials and moguls, they will leave....

i stopped reading right as you said you dont support candide and dont like his style of skiing....

The Olympics will pass and skiing will go back to the same as it was; a lack of money supporting athletes (and plenty of film companies). But really, who is to blame for that? I'm going to put a lot of that blame on the shoulders of the athletes themselves. I mean, why throw money their way when so many "pro" skiers are working pro bono already? If so many are already supporting their own travel, paying their own healthcare, and running around chasing contests and snow on their own dime, why would a company all of a sudden decide to throw them some money? Maybe it's time for a strike like the fast food workers....

You keep mentioning FREEskiing, but all I hear is you telling us what you want us to do, in my book that is NOT FREEskiing. Do what you like not what someone tells you to do that is FREEskiing.

The only point that I don't agree with is discounting how much the Olympics and mainstream competition did in fact kill of the fun in the original Hot Dogging movement.

If you talk to any old school dude about true hot dogging - Even ballet skiing was badass. It was more like flatland BMX than figure skating. Moguls was free spirited and aerials was just a big air contest. The Olympics came knocking, and systematically destroyed all the fun out of the freestyle aspect of the sport. Sure, powder skiing was still fun, but for an east coaster, there was only competitive skiing or nothing. Go into the moguls, and racing mentality followed you. Try to carve and you had to be a ski instructor.

Snowboarding got away from this because of the fact that everything had gotten way too stiff. Anyone who was a non-competitive skier in the east during the late '80s/early '90s can well remember how fucking boring it all was. It was win, win, win or nothing.

So though yes, I do agree that sometimes the Olympic influence is slightly over-dramatized... I also really don't think we should ignore the past and the negative things that happened due to too much shift in importance of winning the Olympics and contests in general.

Verry Funny Trennon, and point well made. However, I think you could be wise to add weight to this by going over how this time will be different for our version of hot dogging.

Notice how the kids on this site will take anything at face value until someone points out the obvious... critical thinking skills are rare on this site.

I will still always remember pbp 13 " hey trennon who taught u to dub back" trennon "who? My roommate ...mike" enter mike michelchuck and heavy metal.... Kids need i show respect to Trennon, i understand the point he is making but i still dont agree with slope and pipe in the olympics

OP is a FIS tool. You stand to loose from keeping freeskiing truly free. How many times to i need to do a rodeo 540 into a water ramp before i can do it on snow, coach?

I realize this is supposed to be satirical... but basically what Trennon has done here is post and exaggerated version of the mirror perspective view to what Logan posted, i.e., from the point of view of the competition skier, in such a way as it sounds absurd.

If I post a caricature version of the opposing viewpoint in such a way as to make it sound ridiculous, haven't I just underscored the original point? In other words, isn't this in effect less a lampooning of what Logan posted and more of a bolster?

I don't think this post had the intended effect.

I think what he is saying is to fuck of with all the stupid opinions about how olympics are bad for the sport... there will only be a handful of people who will be there anyways.. Sports are meant to have more than one aspect, it will not change the side of the sport that you prefer, most people are against the olympics, so those of you that are can do the same thing as before, and nothing will be different, only the olympic athletes will get more attention, not you, so dont worry about it.

I am worried about it, I love this sport, i know where it came from, if you know the history of it, you would know why I dislike the olympics so much.... And since i have commited my whole life to skiing I feel I have a right to express my opinion against it... Just like those that are for it.... Its in the olympics and thats not going to change, but at least when the shit hits the fan, i know which side i was on and i wasnt silent about it

well your opinion to me seems to be just FUCK THE OLYMPICS, why do we fuck the olympics? what makes it so bad? its just the elite of the elite skiers competing for a medal.

Trennon, Even tho i understand your point of view and what you stand for...Its Freeskiing, people do what they want to do their skiing.
