Help stop the construction of the "Glacier Discovery Walk" in Jasper National Park

So as many of you probably know, Brewster (essentially an american company) is basically getting the go-ahead to build this monstrosity in our park. Although there has been tremendous opposition from the public, Parks Canada is still allowing it.

We do not need a structure like this built and we certainly do not need a company like brewster profiting from it. These are our parks, we pay taxes and entrance fees to maintain them.

Please help stop this...

An American company? Fuck it, let 'em do it! 'MURICA!

For real, I'll look into this real quickly and decide if I want to sign this petition.

but basically the deal is that brewster wants to build a big tourist attraction at the same location as an existing viewpoint. They want to build a big skywalk similar to the one at the grand canyon. Brewster will charge people to use the facility (the current viewpoint is free to all park users). Keep in mind that even the grand canyon viewpoint had to be made outside of the national park.

Instinctively, I'm against this project. I don't think that private corporations should be profiting off of national parks, period. It's just wrong. National parks are supposed to showcase pristine environments to the general public. However, it is often difficult to balance human interest with interests of the environment. I don't think that money from Brewster alone is causing Parks Canada to allow this to happen. Having an attraction such as the Glacier Discovery Walk would draw more people into the park, thus generating more revenue for the parks. For many people, national parks are the only time that they are exposed to 'wilderness.' By providing a more enjoyable time in the outdoors, Parks Canada is likely trying to foster a passion for such experiences.

I've spent a lot of time in various American national parks, and if that has taught me one thing, it would be that national parks should never be confused with wilderness. They are major to be tourist attractions, and are designed as such.

I sent a petition against this because I think it is wrong. Jasper is a beautiful place, and I hope to get up there, maybe next summer. Just keep in mind, there are two valid sides to this debate.

Also if anyone's interested in this type of stuff and hasn't already check out the outdoor forum. It would be great to see more people over there.

National parks are national parks, they should be kept that way. They should be kept as clean, preserved, and untouched as possible. That is why it's a national park - to preserve the land. Any construction on any national park, whether it be in America, Canada, or fricken Zimbabwe, is wrong and shouldn't happen. The Earth is dirty, polluted, and overdeveloped enough.

There's my double pennies

I agree with you that the parks are tourist attractions, and that some development is good and brings money into the park. I would be less opposed to this if it was parks canada who was building the facility.

You Canadians (and many muricans) jizz over how great Europe is. They fucking build trains in mountains just to get to a viewpoint. Now you can be even more like Europe!

I'm sure this will appease the convoy of Asian tour buses that are the staple to the Rocky Mountain economy.

This is against everything that Canada's national parks exist for. If people want to see the parks they should go for a fucking hike, you can get pretty far with just a few hours to kill.

Signed! Lets keep our national parks free of garbage developments like this.
